  Advisory is in effect for areas south of US-400. Both of these
  span from 6 am this morning to 6 pm Sunday evening.

- Very dangerous travel conditions expected Sunday.

- Bitterly cold to start to next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 356 AM CST Sat Jan 4 2025

THIS MORNING THROUGH LATE EVENING... Analyzing water vapor satellite
imagery this morning, the deep layer trough that will be the
catalyst for a significant winter storm across the central plains
today, and especially Sunday, is currently located over the Great
Basin. Closer to home, thick stratus has already built in across the
area, and sufficient lift should arrive this morning for drizzle and
freezing drizzle to commence. The biggest challenge through the
daytime and evening hours today will be the location of the freezing
line. The highest uncertainty for impacts from potential freezing
drizzle are generally for locations between US-54 and US-50. Colder
than forecast temperatures are possible given thick low stratus and
persistent easterly or east-northeasterly winds advecting cooler air
into the area. However, surface/road temperatures are above
freezing. Also, latent heat release from any freezing precipitation
could further complicate the temperature forecast today. A couple
degrees difference will dramatically change impacts for the
aforementioned locations. With all that being said, we're generally
expecting impacts during the daytime and evening hours for locations
between US-54 and US-50 to be limited to slick elevated and
untreated surfaces.

Meanwhile, for locations north of US-50, temperatures will likely
remain below freezing throughout the entirety of the day.
Precipitation will likely remain light, but up to a tenth of an inch
of ice accumulations are possible as freezing drizzle and freezing
rain remain persistent throughout the day. Locations along and north
of I-70 may avoid higher ice accumulations as freezing drizzle is
likely to transition to mostly sleet later today and into the
evening hours. Travel impacts are likely to occur, especially on
elevated and untreated surfaces.

TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT... The deep layer trough will emerge
over the Rocky Mountains tonight, and a surface cyclone will develop
across the Texas Panhandle and begin its trek eastward into northern
Oklahoma. With the trough moving into the central plains, mid-level
lapse rates will steepen to around 7-8 C/km, and a large area of
instability (around 100-400 J/kg) is increasingly likely to be
present across the area overnight tonight into Sunday morning. As a
result, precipitation will begin to increase in intensity across
much of the area. Consequentially, it's also possible thunder may
occur with wintry precipitation Sunday morning. With the tightening
pressure gradient at the surface and winds shifting to northerly or
northwesterly, strong low-level CAA will help to dramatically cool
temperatures, and areas along and west of the I-135 corridor, and
north of US-50 should see a rather quick transition from freezing
rain/sleet to snow overnight tonight into Sunday morning. As the
surface low deepens and continues eastward, strong northerly and
northwesterly winds will continue to usher in very cold air. Areas
across south-central and southeast Kansas should see rain/freezing
rain transition to sleet and snow throughout the day. The system
should quickly exit eastward later on Sunday, and precipitation is
expected to come to an end from west to east during the afternoon
and evening hours.

Snow totals across central and portions of south-central Kansas will
be partially determined by enhanced mesoscale bands of snow where
snowfall rates of 1-3 in/hr are possible, especially along the I-70
corridor and areas west of I-135 where a deformation band may set up
during the late morning and early afternoon hours on Sunday.
Additionally, higher snow totals across central Kansas will also be
driven by duration of snow across these locations. Snow could last
around 8 to 12 hours for some locations along the I-70 corridor.
These aforementioned factors will lead to snow totals around 6 to 10
inches, although locally higher totals (perhaps over a foot) are
possible. Further south, duration of snow will likely be limited to
about 4 to 6 hours. Even with heavier bands of snow occurring across
portions of south-central Kansas, snow totals will likely be limited
to around 2 to 6 inches. Also, a prolonged time of mixed
precipitation may also eat into snow totals across portions of south-
central and southeast Kansas. Generally, the further south you are,
the less snow accumulations you can expect.

With regards to ice accumulations, this is probably the most
uncertain aspect of the forecast. Currently, a large swath of a
quarter-inch to a half-inch of ice accumulations are expected
between US-56 and US-54, and around one-tenth to one-quarter of an
inch of ice accumulations are expected north of US-56 and south of
US-54. There's still some uncertainty with how warm the warm nose
will be, and how quickly low-level cold air will push southward
across the area. It's possible that the low-level cold layer could
be colder than currently forecast, and sleet may be favored over
freezing rain in some areas which would eat into ice accumulations
and lessen potential impacts. Also, the convective nature of
precipitation early Sunday morning may also impact precipitation
type across the area. This may favor either sleet, or the potential
for freezing rain to fall hard enough to limit efficient ice
accretion. With all that being said, preparations for tree damage
and potential power outages should still be completed as this
outcome is still the predominant one at this time, particularly for
locations across the central Flint Hills.

Lastly, another impactful aspect of this event will be the wind.
While winds will generally remain around 10 to 20 mph throughout the
day today, the proximity and strength of the surface low passing
south of the area on Sunday should lead to strong northerly or
northwesterly winds during the day on Sunday. Sustained winds around
25 to 35 mph and wind gusts around 45 to 50 mph are becoming
increasingly likely on Sunday. This would likely lead to near-
blizzard conditions, particularly across areas where snow depth will
exceed 2 inches. Wind chills during the day on Sunday will also
hover near or just below 0 for much of the day.

SUNDAY NIGHT-FRIDAY... Much colder air is expected to grip the
central plains through much of next week in the wake of this
weekend's system. Temperatures are likely to plummet to near zero
across the area Sunday night into Monday morning. Winds will
steadily be on the decrease Sunday night into Monday morning,
but they will still be breezy. As a result, wind chills are
likely to dip between 5 and 15 degrees below zero with colder
wind chills possible in some locations across central Kansas.
Bitterly cold air will continue to linger through mid week with
highs in the teens and 20s and lows near zero through at least
Wednesday morning. Wind chills both Tuesday and Wednesday
mornings will generally be near or below zero. The eventual
gradual thaw will likely begin on Thursday and continue into the
weekend, but temperatures are expected to remain below average
until the weekend.

Conditions will continue to deteriorate throughout the
afternoon, evening and into the overnight. -FZDZ may briefly
transition to -DZ at ICT and CNU this evening, but confidence
is quite low for this to occur. Otherwise, a transition to
-FZRAPL will occur from northwest to southeast overnight and an
 eventual transition to all SN late tonight into Sunday
 morning. The combination of +SN and northwesterly winds in
 excess of 35kt will create VSBY as low as 1/4SM once the SN
 begins.

central Kansas. Wind gusts up to 50 mph will result in near-
blizzard conditions and wind chills below zero on Sunday. Travel is
strongly discouraged on Sunday. Please refer to the winter storm

Isolated thunderstorms are possible across southeast Kansas Sunday
morning.

Wind chills are expected to be below zero each night from Sunday
night through Thursday night across the area.
