.SYNOPSIS...
Broad surface high pressure will keep cool and dry conditions in
place through early tomorrow. A moist cold front will bring showers
and possibly some thunderstorms to our area late Tuesday and early
Wednesday. In the wake of the front, gusty winds will persist over
our area on Wednesday and Thursday. A weaker low pressure system may
bring more showers next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 12:45 AM EST Tuesday: Expect high clouds to steadily spread
over our area from the west overnight and into the morning ahead
of an approaching cold front. Winds have gone light to calm at most
sites and they should stay that way well into the morning. Otherwise,
the near-term fcst remains on track.

Sfc high pressure remains in control thru the overnight hrs. The sfc
high will migrate offshore by early Tuesday morning. Sfc and low level
gradients will remain relatively weak thru tonight and lower elevations
are expected to see winds go very light if not calm. Cirrus and alto
decks will increase toward dawn, but good radiational cooling conditions
are expected most of the night and lows should end up a few deg below
normal. 925-850mb warm upglide will develop by daybreak and strengthen
thru late morning as gradients increase. High elevations will see the
most marked increase in wind speeds and gusts for Tuesday. Developing
moisture advection will lead to low stratus or stratocu development
from south to north around that time. Mostly cloudy skies will be seen
across the CWA by about noon. Very light precip may develop along the
south-facing Escarpment as soon as midday but most guidance does not
develop QPF response until late afternoon. Max temps still should be
several degrees warmer than today's. An Increased Fire Danger Statement
remains in effect Tues in NC/SC. An Increased Fire Danger Statement was
issued for all of NE GA for Tuesday in coordination with neighboring
offices. See the Fire Wx discussion for more details.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 205 PM EST Monday: Stacked closed low will be in the midst
of shifting across the Central Plains into the Midwest, while the
attendant cold front travels across the MS Valley into the Deep
South Tuesday evening into Tuesday night. 50-60 kt LLJ begins to
punch into the region as the main frontal zone inches closer to the
CFWA late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. Upper jet
dynamics and strong upper-level divergence to go along with good
moisture transport and 60+ kt of deep layer shear will support the
development of an ongoing QLCS. The QLCS will translate across
the Deep South and over the region just after midnight in the
far western portions of the CFWA. 0-1km shear at 30-40 kt and
deep curvature in the low-level hodograph would support embedded
tornado genesis along the line as it crosses the region from west to
east through the morning hours Wednesday. The one caveat is the lack
of available instability, especially SBCAPE. The gradient wind
associated with this system will provide enough wind energy in
itself to support damaging straight-line winds, but SBCAPE will be
needed for the QLCS to max out its severe potential and complete
tornado genesis. With the line still expected to cross much of the
CFWA during the coolest part of the day, the potential for
widespread severe weather seems low. However, CAMs are starting to
pick up on the system and there is some support for instability
(~100 J/kg of SBCAPE) to develop along and east of I-77 just after
daybreak Wednesday as the QLCS moves into this region. This would be
the biggest area of concern for damaging winds and an isolated
tornado or two before the QLCS shifts east of the CFWA by Wednesday
afternoon. Temperatures Tuesday night will run 15+ degrees above
normal as stout southerly WAA and low to mid 50s dewpoints settle
in. Afternoon highs on Wednesday should be 5-10 degrees above normal
as CAA behind the fropa will be offset by lee troughing at the
surface with a continued southwesterly component.

Confidence for strong gradient winds continues to grow as the
pressure gradient between the offshore surface high and a <990 mb
low that shifts into the Midwest and Great Lakes region Tuesday
evening through Wednesday. Advisory-level gusts can be expected
for a good chunk of the CFWA, while High Wind Warning criteria
can't be ruled out at the higher elevations of the North Carolina
mountains, especially once the LLJ moves over the region. With that
being the case, a High Wind Watch is in effect for elevations above
3500 feet from Yancey (NC) and southwest. Even behind the fropa
Wednesday afternoon, winds will continue to remain elevated into
Wednesday night, especially in the mountains. Wrap around moisture
from the low pressure system will help to develop NWFS along the TN
border in the NC mountains Wednesday night into Thursday. Wind gusts
pick up again to Wind Advisory criteria across the mountains and
potentially east of the mountains as the delayed CAA behind the
fropa shifts across the area and provides a strong downslope
component as well, which would support afternoon highs to only drop
a few ticks below normal east of the mountains. Winds gradually
subside by Thursday night as weak high pressure moves in from the
west, but may linger at the ridgetops through the night.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 245 PM EST Monday: Strong quasi-zonal flow aloft will develop
as the trough axis shifts offshore by Thursday night, while weak
high pressure returns, which allows the area to return to quiet
sensible weather conditions on Thursday night and Friday before
our next potential storm system starts to get its act together
bringing in a relatively active pattern back across the area
by this weekend. Active jet stream will be overlaid across the
southern CONUS and could bring a series of systems across the
area through the end of the forecast period. This setup is peak
March as we swing back and forth on temperatures each day, while
the atmosphere produces multiple rounds of precip. Temperatures
will continue to increase overall, remaining above normal while
going back and forth, depending on the arrival of storm systems.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Expect high clouds to steadily spread over
our area from the west overnight and into the morning ahead of an
approaching cold front. Expect MVFR cigs to gradually develop from
west to east later this aftn and evening as the front approaches.
Expect the prevailing showers (and possible thunderstorms) to hold
off until just after the this taf period ends at 06z. At KCLT, I
have prevailing SHRA beginning at 10z. Winds should remain light
to calm overnight and well into morning for most locations. They
will gradually strengthen ahead of the front today, with gusts
ranging from 15 to 20 kts during the aftn and evening and higher
speeds/gusts after 00z this evening. Directions will be S to SE
across the area. SE flow may generate some spotty -SHRA this aftn
and evening, but confidence remains too low to mention before roughly
00z this evening.

Outlook: A line of heavy showers and/or thunderstorms will move
thru the area ahead of a cold front late Tuesday night into Wed-
nesday morning bringing restrictions. Gusty winds will also develop
ahead of the front and linger well into Thursday. VFR conditions
are expected to briefly return Wednesday aftn but restrictions may
redevelop Wednesday night into Thursday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
An Increased Fire Danger Statement is now in effect for all of
our zones from 6 AM to 8 PM Tuesday.

Although RH is likely to remain higher through the day Tuesday
owing to moisture return ahead of an approaching frontal system,
precipitation is not expected to develop soon enough to have
an impact on fuel moisture through the warmest part of the day
Tuesday. Furthermore, winds will begin to pick up during the
afternoon. Following coordination with forestry officials in NC,
SC, and GA, another Increased Fire Danger Statement has been issued
for Tuesday.
