.SYNOPSIS...
A weak system moving across the region today will bring light
precipitation this morning, but should move off to the east this
afternoon. High pressure will build back in through mid week
with warmer temperatures. The next system will cross the region
Friday into Saturday, but with well above normal temperatures,
so precipitation will be rain.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 1245 PM: Light radar returns still are seen across the
southeast CWA within area of shallow moist upglide, generally
associated with broad trough surrounding a compact shortwave now
near the mouth of the Ohio River. A thin stratus deck on visible
satellite overlays a lower deck of stratocu. Upglide will weaken by
late afternoon as winds begin to turn more westerly in response to
the trough; as the higher cloud deck exits, insolation may also work
to scatter the low clouds. However, the afternoon will be largely
cloudy over the southeastern third of the CWA. Upslope generated
cloud cover will linger over the mountains near the TN border; a few
sprinkles or flurries are possible in that area as well, although
remaining accumulation is not expected to be much if anything.

The aforementioned shortwave will cross the CWA between about 00-03
UTC this evening. Passage of the wave should veer low-level winds
further around to NW and scour out the last of the low clouds over
the foothills and Piedmont, leaving mostly clear skies over those
areas by midnight; a few streamers of shallow cumulus however may
linger thru early Tue morning. Even with the NW winds, moisture
is lacking along the TN border, so cloud cover should diminish
overnight there, if not sooner. A tight gradient will persist
such that high elevations will see strong sustained winds develop
overnight, though subsidence inversion aloft will limit the ability
of strong gusts to mix to lower mountain elevations or valleys
overnight. However, mostly sunny skies could allow for mixing
and brisk gusts during at least the early daytime hours. Low-end
gusts of 20-25 mph will be possible thru Tuesday in the Piedmont,
particularly those areas in the lee of mountain gaps. With abundant
sunshine and downsloping in many populated areas, max temps will
rise a few degrees above climo, nearing 60 in much of the Upstate
and Savannah Valley.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 153 AM EST Monday...The middle part of the week continues
to look relatively quiet and relatively warm and dry as we should
remain under a fast-moving confluent WNW flow aloft, with a split
in the flow around an upper low over the desert SW. Good agreement
was noted in the guidance. Tuesday night might be the first night
in a few weeks when the low temp stays above freezing, giving
us a warmer start to Wednesday. The pressure gradient across the
mtns strengthens in the afternoon to 5-6 mb, signaling a breezy
day across the region, with downslope warming resulting in high
temps 10-15 degrees above normal and reaching the middle 60s
outside the mtns if all goes according to plan. A nrn stream
clipper system moving past well to our north is still expected
to push a dry cold front across the region, but the new guidance
suggests that won't happen until Wednesday evening. High
pressure will build in from the west behind the front overnight,
but even as this happens a mid/upper ridge will be building
overhead downstream of the upper low moving over the srn
Rockies, so low temps won't drop off substantially from the
previous night.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 309 AM EST Monday...One more quiet and relatively warm day
for Thursday as sfc high pressure zips past just to our north. The
mature mid-latitude cyclone associated with the large upper low
coming east off the Front Range should stay far enough to the west
that a developing warm frontal feature will not activate into the
mtns before the end of the day. That will change overnight with
quickly improving moist upglide and warm advection spreading east
into the region. The trend on the overnight temps has been up and up
to the point where even the high elevations should stay above 32F,
so any precip should be rain. Speaking of which, at this point,
precip probs are relatively modest owing to uncertainty with the
time of arrival. We should be effectively in a warm sector across
much of the fcst area on Friday, but there is much uncertainty with
the high temps. Will precip arrive early enough to lock in a sort of
in-situ cool pool over the NC Foothills and NW Piedmont? Will that
keep the warm frontal boundary closer to I-85 instead of north of
the fcst area? Pattern recognition suggests a potential for high
shear/low CAPE severe weather threats as a strong low level jet
translates east into the fcst area during peak heating, but for now
the guidance develops only minimal and insufficient sfc-based CAPE
to raise alarm. We shall be keeping an eye on this potential in the
next few days. A sfc low may pass north of the region Friday night
or Saturday morning, pushing a sfc cold front across the region,
but the timing of this is also uncertain, with several ensemble
members showing the fropa on Saturday or later. Thus, the model
blend does the usual smearing out of the precip probs into the
early part of the weekend. Expect later model runs to provide more
clarity and to narrow the focus of the timing. That being said,
it is worth noting that some of the guidance shows a stout vort
center/short wave crossing the western Carolinas as it rotates thru
the bottom of the upper low moving up the OH Valley on Saturday. If
that holds, it could easily be the focus for additional scattered
showers on Saturday, maybe even a few thunderstorms. By then, the
shear has passed well to our east. We should be able to salvage
the back end of the weekend as things look relatively quiet after
that wave passes. Temps should remain above normal.

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Areas of IFR stratocu remain across KCLT
and the SC sites; a few sprinkles will be possible in the first
couple hours of the period at KCLT. Lowering of clouds to LIFR
is possible for a time this afternoon with moisture trapped under
inversion, but development of more westerly flow aloft, and possibly
insolation on the cloud deck, may promote breaks and scattering
before sunset. KAVL and KHKY could see some lowering to MVFR if
any shallow instability is able to develop a cu field, but that
too should be short-lived. Winds will turn closer to due W at all
sites except KAVL this evening, which should scatter any remaining
cigs by around midnight at the latest. KAVL will continue to see NW
winds thru the end of the period. Gradient flow will support high
elevation wind gusts after midnight and appears likely to create
LLWS conditions in the immediate lee of the mountains and over KAVL.
Some gusting could develop at all TAF terminals in the morning,
but perhaps not until near the end of the 18z periods.

Outlook: Dry conditions and VFR return by tonight, with dry weather
persisting through much of the week.

Temperatures above around 3500 feet elevation are expected to be
cold enough for the precip to be light snow. Light accumulations of
snow up to one inch are possible, although 2 to 3 inches could fall
on the highest peaks and ridgetops. In addition, a light glaze of ice
could form in some locations. The wintry precipitation could create
slippery road conditions, which would impact the morning commute.
The precipitation is expected to change to rain before ending shortly
after mid-morning.
