.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system will move off the Mid-Atlantic coast later
today, ending precipitation across the area, except for some
snow showers along the Tennessee border that will linger into
tonight. Cold and dry high pressure builds in Tuesday through
Thursday, keeping temperatures well below normal. An area of low
pressure will form near the Texas coast and track east, spreading
moisture into the region Friday into Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 310 am EDT Monday: The leading edge of wide frontal band of
showers is currently bisecting the forecast area, and will continue
to overspread the remainder of the CWA over the next 2-3 hours.
Strong warm advection responding to 50-60 kt low level jet core just
above the stable surface layer continues to steadily eliminate
pockets of cold air across the southern Appalachians and vicinity out
ahead of the higher precip rates. Even in the areas where the cold
air typically hangs on the longest (i.e., the Blue Ridge escarpment
north of I-40...including the current Winter Storm Warning area),
surface temperatures are becoming increasingly marginal for freezing
rain. This isn't surprising considering the rather weak in-situ
nature of the cold air damming/absence of any surface cold
advection, while latent heat release due to freezing is expected to
help eradicate much of any lingering cold air as precip rates
increase over the next 2-4 hours. The only change to Winter Wx
Headlines will be to begin trimming the Advisory from the
southwest....dropping Macon-NC and Southern Jackson-NC.

Otherwise, 100 PoPs are advertised for the entire forecast area
early this morning, with additional liquid equivalent totals
expected to range from around 0.33-0.75" with locally higher amounts
on south-facing slopes. The warm conveyor belt precip will largely
east of the CWA by noon. Impressive cold advection overspreads the
mountains during the afternoon, with strong/deep NW flow supporting
deepening upslope moisture near the TN/NC border from late afternoon
into the evening. Scattered to numerous snow showers are expected to
result, with ingredients generally supportive of accumulating
snowfall before the snow begins tapering off after midnight. General
snowfall amounts of 1-3," with locally higher amounts...especially
on the high peaks and ridgetops of the Smokies can be expected.
Overall coverage of accumulating snowfall is expected to be
insufficient to warrant an Advisory, but since some of the areas
that would be impacted (namely the northern mountains) are currently
under Advisories/Warnings, the next shift will have plenty of time
to further evaluate the potential need for extending or adding new
headlines later this morning.

Of greater concern will be the increasing wind gusts in the cold
advection regime from late afternoon through the overnight. NW H8
winds accelerate to over 50 kts in the favored mountain wave
generation region near the Blue Ridge, the surface pressure gradient
increases to around 7 MB across the mountains, and pressure rises in
the wake of the front increase to around 1 mb/hour. The end result
of this should be very solid Wind Advisory criteria, with spotty
damaging wind criteria across the NC Blue Ridge zones and across the
higher elevations of the southern/central mountains. Min temps are
expected to be around 10 degrees below normal. Locations above 3500
feet or so across the northern mountains and above 4500 feet across
the southern and central mountains will likely see wind chill values
dip to the 0 to -10 range by the end of the period, but coverage of
Cold Wx Advisory criteria is expected to be too limited to warrant
product issuance.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Key Messages:

1) Cold temperatures well below normal and dry conditions through
Thursday.

2) Dangerous wind chills possible Wednesday night above 3500 ft.

As of 300 AM Monday: Confluent upper flow with a digging trough over
the eastern Great Lakes and New England and weak ridging over the
Southern Plains will allow an arctic air mass to slide southeast
into the region. Dry conditions are expected, with persistent
NWLY flow aloft. A reinforcing dry front is expected to cross
the forecast area Wednesday, which may usher in a brief period of
cloudiness along the TN border and breezy conditions across the
high terrain. The combination of the winds and cold temps may
bring wind chills down around -5 to -10 deg F Wednesday night
into Thursday morning above 3500 ft, especially in the Northern
Mountains. Wind chills may dip into the teens nearly everywhere
outside the mountains with single digits to near zero in the
mountain valleys by daybreak Thursday. Overall, temps will be 5
to 15 deg below normal thru the period, with Thursday likely to
be the coldest day.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Key Messages

1) Below-normal temperatures will continue into next weekend.

2) A potential storm system may bring moisture with cold air in
place across the region late Friday thru Saturday.

As of 315 AM Monday: Models seem to be coming into better
agreement on a low pressure system organizing near the TX coast
Thursday and tracking east near/along the Gulf Coast Friday into
Saturday. So confidence is increasing that we will see a round
of precip in the late Friday thru early Saturday time frame. With
temps still below normal as moisture from this system approaches,
there is a decent chance of wintry precip types, especially in the
mountains. Unfortunately, like nearly all winter systems in our
region, there is still a lot of uncertainty on the details. The
deterministic models all have a warm nose punching into the area
Friday night, with some in-situ cold air damming likely in place
thanks to the initially dry air. However, the ensemble probs and
the latest NBM seem to be leaning toward mostly snow, even for our
southern Piedmont. The low does have a Miller type-A-like track,
which is usually more of a RA/SN setup for our area. However,
thicknesses are on the warm side, with the 540-dam line likely
north of the forecast area. With the event still out on Days 5-6,
will continue to go with a RA/SN forecast with the understanding
that a wintry mix is certainly probable for at least portions of
the forecast area. The system looks to be a fast-mover, so even if
we do end up with snow and/or ice accums, QPF should be limited by
the short duration. Still too much uncertainty to mention specific
accums, but will begin to mention potential for wintry precip in
the HWO.

The low quickly exits to our northeast Saturday aftn/eve. Broad
upper troughing will continue across much of the central and
eastern CONUS in the wake of the coastal low thru the weekend and
into early next week. This will keep temps below normal with dry
conditions expected.

.AVIATION /09Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Cigs will continue to lower early this
morning as moisture deepens in advance of an approaching  cold
front. Associated wide band of moderate/embedded heavy rain showers
will cross the Terminal Forecast Area through the morning, resulting
in persistent MVFR/occl IFR visby in addition to lowering cigs to
IFR between 10 and 13Z. Precip will be primarily rain, but a brief
period of FZRA is possible at KHKY prior to daybreak. Also can't
completely rule out an isolated TS, but the probability at any
individual site is less than 20%. Precip is expected to end from
west-to-east between 12 and 15Z at most sites. However, low cigs are
expected to linger through the morning before improving to VFR
during the afternoon. Light winds are forecast to turn from some
flavor of easterly early in the period, to SW at 5-10 kts by late
morning. A S/SW low level jet of 60 kts just above the surface
passing over these light surface winds will result in LLWS early
this morning. Gusty W/SW winds develop across the Piedmont in the
wake of a front this afternoon, while very gusty winds from the NW
(g35-40kts) are expected to develop at KAVL during the afternoon and
evening.

Outlook: Gusty NW winds continue through early Tuesday morning,
mainly at KAVL, but will taper off elsewhere Monday night. Dry and
VFR conditions return Monday night through Thursday as high pressure
builds into the region. A low pressure system moves in from the west
on Friday bringing back both precipitation and restrictions.
