.KEY MESSAGES...

- Another strong spring system will lift through the region
  through Wednesday bringing strong winds, rain, a few
  thunderstorms, and accumulating snowfall. Dangerous to near
  impossible travel is expected across northwestern IA.

- Accumulative snowfall amounts will vary between 2 to 4 inches
  along and west of a Yankton to Canton to Tracy, MN line with
  4-8+ inches possible east of the line. While there remains
  some lingering uncertainty as to where the snow band sets up,
  there will be a sharp gradient on the northern edge.

- A Blizzard Warning is now in effect for portions of far
  southeastern South Dakota, far northeastern Nebraska, far
  southwestern Minnesota, and northwestern IA through Wednesday
  evening.

- A High Wind Warning is now in effect for portions of far
  southeastern South Dakota, far northeastern Nebraska, far
  southwestern Minnesota, and northwestern IA through Wednesday
  evening.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 450 AM CDT Tue Mar 18 2025

TODAY-WEDNESDAY: A slightly cooler and breezy day is ahead! Taking a
look across the area, areas of stratus continue to lift northwards
this morning with a few pockets of embedded sprinkles/flurries
mostly due to some enhanced mid-level frontal forcing. Besides that
everything should remains quiet for most of the day. With lingering
cold air advection (CAA) and increasing northeasterly surface winds,
expect a much cooler day with temperatures in the low 50s to low 60s
with the warmest conditions along the Highway-20 corridor. While the
combination of mild temperatures and breezy northeasterly wind
between 25-35 mph could lead to some locally elevated fire danger
this afternoon, higher dew points will likely keep any risk
extremely localized for the day. From here, will likely see cloud
cover increase from northwest to southeast as frontal forcing and
lift strengthen ahead of our next system. With this the state is set
for our next precipitation chances.

Our focus will shift towards the Colorado Rockies as a surface low
ejects into the central plains by this evening and tracks
northeastwards into Wednesday. Forcing will increase as the low
deepens with southeasterly flow aloft advecting in moisture into the
area. With milder temperatures expected initially, rain will be the
predominant precipitation type to start. Could see a few pockets of
moderate to heavy rain develop across portions of northwestern IA by
Wednesday morning as 300-400 J/kg of MUCAPE interact with a strong
jet streak overnight. However, this would only occur for a brief 3 to
4 hour period. From here, dynamic cooling in the column will help
rain will transition over to snow from west to east. A brief period
of mix will be possible as things continue transition. However, not
expecting any impacts with this. Shifting gears, the more impactful
part of this event will likely start between 6 am and 12 pm as
strengthening frontal forcing and dPVA lead to a tightening
mesoscale snow band developing roughly south of a Yankton to Sioux
Falls to Tracy, MN line.

While there is still some lingering uncertainty as to the exact
location of the band, both HREF and SREF guidance continue to show
strong signals for rapid snowfall accumulations underneath the band
with both models showing 30%-50% confidence in 1 to 2 in/hr snowfall
rates. Combine this with strong northerly winds with gusts up to 60
mph and this becomes a classic set up for blizzard conditions. With
this in mind, went ahead and upgraded our current Winter Storm Watch
to Blizzard Warning which will run from 4 am through 7 pm on
Wednesday. With confidence continuing to grow in our higher wind
potential, decided to also upgrade out High Wind Watch for most of
northwestern IA and far northeastern NE with it running from 7 am to
7 pm on Wednesday. Given that the environment will be conducive for
significant visibility reductions with falling snow and
blowing/drifting areas of accumulating snow; decided to also
introduce a row of winter weather advisories roughly stretching from
Bon Homme to Minnehaha counties in southeastern South Dakota and up
through Lincoln and Lyon counties in southwestern Minnesota. The
advisory will run from 1 am through 1 pm with the potential for
expansions as needed if thing develop further northwestwards.
Lastly, should see snowfall begin to taper off from west to east by
Wednesday afternoon.

AMOUNTS AND IMPACTS: Looking into overall snowfall amounts, 4 to 8+
inches of fresh snow will be possible along and south Yankton to
Canton to Tracy, MN line with the highest amounts across our far
southeastern zones (Woodbury, Cherokee, Clay, Ida, and Buena Vista
counties). Snowfall amounts will sharply decrease as you head
northwest of the previously mentioned line with 2-4 inches expected.
As mentioned above, these amounts can be displaced 50 to 100 miles
to the northwest or southeast depending on the track of the system
and where the heaviest band sets up. Either way, confidence is high
(>80%) in minor to moderate travel impacts as the combination of
blizzard conditions and heavy snowfall accumulations will lead to
considerable disruptions to travel especially in the areas of
heaviest accumulations so make sure to plan accordingly and
delay/cancel any travel plans where possible!

THURSDAY ONWARDS: Looking into the latter parts of the week, a
strengthening ridge will quickly follow the departing low pressure
system by Thursday bringing another push of WAA aloft. Temperatures
from Thursday through Friday will become a bit complicated with
increasing potential for a fresh snowpack across the area with
the heaviest accumulations across northwestern IA. However, any
snowless areas won't likely have much trouble reaching the upper
40s to 50s heading into the weekend. Looking aloft, a mid-level
wave will swing through the area by Friday night potentially
bring some limited chances (<20%) for rain and snow. A more
robust upper-level wave will swing across the northern plains
from Saturday night into Sunday potentially bring renewed
chances for precipitation. However, with long-range guidance
showing varying solutions in timing and strength; decided to
leave in the default NBM POPs for this period.

VFR conditions begin the TAF period. Marginally breezy to breezy
northeast winds are being observed early this afternoon with VFR
stratus along the highway-14 corridor. Winds will strengthen during
the afternoon hours with gusts up to about 30 knots expected.

Things begin to change during the evening and overnight hours though
as winds will markedly strengthen with gusts reaching up to and
exceeding 40 knots out of the north. The strongest winds will occur
across northwest Iowa. Cloud bases will begin to lower to MVFR
levels after midnight but especially after 08z. This will also be
the same time period that precipitation will begin to fall along and
southeast of a Tracy, Minnesota to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to
Yankton, South Dakota line. Some uncertainty remains in how far
northwest precipitation will expand. Thus have only included PROB30
groups in KFSDs TAF as of this time. Precipitation looks to begin as
mixed precipitation in the form of rain and sleet before
transitioning to snow during the morning hours tomorrow. The strong
winds and falling snow will result in reduced visibilities down to
MVFR/IFR levels. Could see lower visibilities due to blowing snow
but confidence is not high enough to include in a TAF at this time.
The strong winds and snow will finish out the TAF period.
