Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 1035 PM CST Sat Feb 15 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Dangerously cold air mass expected Monday into at least Thursday. Temperatures as much as 20 to 40 degrees below normal continue through much of the next week, with near record cold possible Tuesday and Wednesday. The return to school on Tuesday morning will be dangerously cold, in fact the morning commutes from Monday morning through Thursday morning will likely see wind chill values of 20 below to 40 below zero. - Patchy light snow will remain possible through tonight, but accumulations will be very minor. - Another system will bring snow chances to mainly the Missouri River Valley. Around an inch of accumulation will be possible. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 228 PM CST Sat Feb 15 2025 A fast moving, moisture starved system will move through tonight and Sunday and may produce some flurries or patchy light snow, but amounts will be minimal as temperatures in the column drop to colder than the dendritic growth zone making snow production more difficult. The main feature that this system will bring is true, colder arctic air. While highs on Sunday will be close to 10 above most locations, temperatures will fall Sunday night into Monday morning with wind chill values about 20 to 30 below in most locations. Sunday night into Monday morning a system will move through mainly Nebraska, but may bring some light snow to areas near and just north of the Missouri River, Model soundings show rapid drying in the arctic air mass towards I-90, but saturation does persist near the Missouri River for a few hours, so a quick inch or so will be possible. The 90th percentiles from the EC Ensemble and GEFS do hint at upwards of 3 inches near the Missouri River, but the better forcing and saturation does look to be to the south. By Monday night into Tuesday, upper level low pressure will sag south and rotate near the Canadian border through most of the remainder of the upcoming weak. This will drive some excessively cold air southward with scattered record cold temperatures possible, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. The ESAT tables are indicating an anomalously high surface ridge building into the region, indicative of the cold air along with some very cold 850 mb to 700 mb temperatures. This strong ridge of high pressure is expected to barely budge throughout the entire week. What this suggests is that thermally we will not be very supportive of snow, so any snow chances will likely be ice crystals, flurries or patchy very light snow. As for temperatures, with 925 mb temperatures roughly -20 to - 28 C, there is not a lot of room to warm up. Overnight lows may not radiate real efficiently at night with high pressure just west of the area allowing for some northerly flow to continue into the night. But with these winds and morning temperatures -10 to -20 Monday through Thursday, wind chill values for the morning commute will be about -25 to -40 most locations each morning. The good thing after this very cold week is some very good agreement on a warm up next weekend into the following week. We of course will have some snow to melt but the overall snowpack is fairly light, generally about 4 inches or less everywhere. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z MONDAY/...
