A final surge of colder air is expected tonight as an upper level
jet dives south on the backside of an upper level trough. With the
reinvigorated cold air advection wind chills will drop tonight with
most locations falling to -25 to -35 through Tuesday morning. Near
highway 14 wind chills may drop to as cold as -40. While there will
be some improvement during the day on Monday, most locations will
still remain close to -25 or colder so do not see the need to lift
the cold weather advisory. For the most part light snow and flurries
are pretty unlikely as the thermal profile is mostly colder than the
DGZ. Will keep an eye out for areas in western Brule and Gregory
county where some river effect clouds and patchy light snow will be
possible during the day Monday.
After a cold start to the morning, still anticipate some improvement
on Tuesday as southerly flow develops and temperatures rebound a
bit. Still below normal but should see highs in the teens to mid 20s.
Low pressure passes by to the north on Tuesday night and Wednesday
morning, bringing stronger west to northwest flow on Wednesday. This
will bring temperatures right back to around normal. For the system
Wednesday into Thursday there are a few more members, roughly 20-30
percent in the GEFS, that are hinting at at least a chance for 1-2
inches of snow. The GEFS and EC Ensemble still pushing 70-90% for at
least 0.01" of liquid equivalent during this time. While the GEFS is
hinting at the better chance for more than a tenth of an inch
liquid along highway 14, the latest EC and GEFS 75th to 90th
percentiles as well as the Nam and GFS show some indication for
higher amounts near and south of I-90, so that will be a slight
outlier group to keep an eye on.With all of this in mind took the
near zero pops and zero qpf and increased both to make more sense of
what the latest model guidance is indicating.
Northwest flow aloft on Thursday becomes more westerly into the
weekend which supports mainly dry conditions. While temperatures
should be a bit below normal, highs in the 20s to lower 30s will
still be likely so not nearly as cold as the current air mass.
