No changes to the Winter Storm Watch were made.

High pressure across the central part of the county will push
eastward today. Meanwhile, a low pressure system will develop in the
western Gulf of Mexico and move northeast. As the low pressure moves
onshore early Friday, a wedge will begin to build down across the
eastern portion of the CWA.

High pressure and dry conditions will prevail today. Temperatures
will remain 5 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of year. Most
of the overnight period will remain dry, but the isentropic lift over
the wedge will be increasing. Mid and high level cloudiness will
thicken.

From run to run, the models have trended towards more freezing rain
and less snowfall. The warm nose aloft around 700mb to 750mb looks to
move in earlier and and stronger than previous models runs. This
means a messy precip-type forecast for much of north and central GA.

Temperatures within the wedge will hover at or below freezing. As
always, there is some question of how much the wedge will erode from
the south side on Friday. BL winds do support the most erosion from
CSG to MCN southward. One of the forecast problems of the day will
how much erosion of the wedge will occur between the MCN-CSG line to
the Interstate 20 corridor. Do think that some warming through the
day is possible, but not confident on how much. The NAM is the most
aggressive with the cold air and usually does the best with the
wedge. However, the overall evolution of the low pressure system
looks suspect. The GFS seems to handle the synoptic pattern better.
So, have taken a blend of temps that are slightly warmer than the NAM
at the surface. The wedge will likely hold firm north of the
Interstate 20 corridor, even including metro ATL.

Precip chances will begin to increase from the west after 2AM Friday
morning. At onset, it should be cold enough aloft for some light
snow. The snow may mix with rain in the far south where temperatures
will be closer to above freezing. As the day progresses, temperatures
should hold at or below freezing within the wedge. During the late
afternoon into the evening, the warm nose aloft moves overhead and
the p-types will get a lot more messy. A mixture of snow, sleet and
freezing rain will be likely where temperatures are below freezing.
Where temperatures hover just near freezing a mixture of
rain/freezing rain will be likely. Further north across the
mountains, more sleet and freezing rain will mix with the snow,
cutting the snowfall amounts.

Precipitation will be ongoing at the start of the period late Friday
evening, though coming to a rapid end from west to east by the
predawn hours Saturday. Temperatures are expected to hover around or
just above freezing across most of north Georgia during this time. As
models have gradually trended toward a more pronounced warm nose and
warmer thermal profiles, most frozen precipitation outside of the
far north Georgia mountains will likely be in the form of freezing
rain with perhaps some lingering sleet by this time with the bulk
south of I-20 ending in only liquid rain. Additional light ice
accretion would be a concern, with total ice amounts potentially

solution, concerns for at least scattered power outages would also

Temperatures Saturday will be slow to warm and not warm all that
much overall with highs remaining in the mid to upper 30s in north
Georgia. Lingering transportation and icing concerns are still likely
during this time. Additionally, very cold temperatures Saturday
night into Sunday morning will refreeze any melting that occurs as
lows will dip into the teens across north Georgia.

Below normal temperatures will continue through the extended period.
A reinforcing cold front will bring a renewed push of colder
temperatures by Tuesday, leading highs to remain largely in the 30s
and 40s across north Georgia and 50s in central Georgia. Lows will
remain below freezing each night.

The main forecast challenge will be precip type. Across the Atlanta
metro area, initial precip is expected to be mostly light snow by
late tonight into early Fri morning. Across the S Atlanta metro area,
the precip type is expected to begin to shift to a mix of sleet and
freezing rain by mid to late morning Fri as a nose of warm air begins
to advect over the existing wedge (at around 8kft). N Atlanta metro
area sites as well as AHN may stay snow thru 18Z Fri. Farther S, MCN
precip is expected to begin around mid-morning Fri with a rain/snow
mix. At CSG, a rain/snow mix is possible by late tonight, but the
chance is lower. For ATL, light winds this evening are forecast to
veer to NE by around 08Z, with increasing easterly winds Fri morning.

Light mixed precipitation will begin spreading into the area from
the west late tonight. Accumulating frozen precipitation is not
anticipated until Friday morning.

Below normal temperatures will continue through Tuesday.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 7 AM Friday to 7 AM Saturday
for much of north Georgia, mainly north of the I-20 corridor.
Accumulating wintry precipitation is expected in this area Friday
through Saturday morning. While uncertainty remains regarding
precipitation type and accumulation amounts, impacts to travel are
expected during this time, especially in north Georgia, including the
Atlanta metro. Scattered power outages are also possible in areas
with significant ice accumulation.
