Key Messages:

 - A wedge has over north Georgia due to cold air damming along
   the Appalachians. Rain showers will overspread much north
   Georgia and portions of central Georgia today.

 - A strong cold front will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms
   Saturday night into Sunday, which could produce a conditional
   threat for isolated severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and
   localized flooding.

As the morning begins, the center of a strong (1035+ mb) high
pressure is moving eastward offshore of the New England coast.
Meanwhile, a CAD wedge has developed along the Appalachians and is
strengthening over north Georgia. The upper level flow pattern is
becoming more amplified as a shortwave digs through the Southwest.
setting the Southeast CONUS up underneath southwesterly flow aloft.
A surface low is developing over the Oklahoma Panhandle region, to
the immediate east of the shortwave trough axis. A warm front
extends eastward from this low into the Tennessee Valley region.
This warm front will be overrun by an upper level jet max and a mid
level disturbance traversing the southwesterly flow. To the
immediate south of this warm front, a strong low level jet at the
925 mb and 850 mb levels will set up over Mississippi before
strengthening over Alabama and Georgia.

Isentropic lift has begun as moist air overspreads the CAD wedge. At
the time of this writing, cloud ceilings between 1500-2500 ft have
developed across the state, which are forecast to continue lowering
through the morning hours. The persistent cloud cover will inhibit
radiational cooling, and low temperatures are forecast to be mainly
in the 40s this morning, aside from some upper 30s in far northeast
Georgia. Isolated showers are ongoing, which are expected to
increase in coverage through the morning and persist through the
afternoon, with highest PoPs in north Georgia. The CAD wedge is
forecast to persist into the afternoon given the strength of the
retreating parent high and increasing likelihood of rain showers
overrunning the wedge and reinforcing the dome of cold air
underneath. Elected to once again run on the lower side of guidance
for today's temperatures in order to capture the footprint of the
wedge. As a result, high temperatures are forecast to range from the
upper 40s to low 50s in the sector roughly north of I-20 and east of
I-75. Temperatures will warm into the mid 60s to low 70s south and
west of the wedge boundary. With deep moisture advection within the
southwesterly upper flow and the low level jet setting up, Dewpoints
and precipitable water will quickly increase over the course of the
day and into tonight.

Tonight, the shortwave will move eastward through the Mississippi
River Valley, with the surface low intensifying and lifting
northeast from the Ozarks towards the Ohio Valley region. The warm
front will retreat to the northeast, further expanding the warm
sector over the region and helping to erode the wedge. A cold front
extending south from the low will then advance towards Georgia.
Showers and thunderstorms organized ahead of this cold front will
provide another round of rainfall and conditional chances severe
weather as it sweeps from northwest to southeast across the CWA
after midnight through mid-morning on Sunday. The threats for severe
weather and heavy rainfall/additional flooding will be discussed
below:

Severe Weather:
As storms advance into northwest Georgia after midnight into early
Sunday morning, it will be entering a high-shear / low-CAPE
environment. The orientation of shear vectors indicates a linear
convective mode - most likely a QLCS. The presence of a strong
925mb low level jet will contribute to 0-1 km shear values between
45-50 kts, 0-1 km SRH between 250-350 J/kg, and deep layer bulk
shear values of 60-70 kts. That all sounds impressive, but should
be stressed that whether or not severe weather materializes will
be conditional on how much SBCAPE is able to materialize and how
long the wedge is able to persist and where its boundary is
located. Hi- res solutions continue to indicate that the far
western portion of the state will be the most favored location to
see SBCAPE up to 100- 150 J/kg before sunrise. Even this marginal
CAPE would be sufficient for a few storms in the line to become
strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts being the primary
hazard. Furthermore, wind profile differences along the outer edge
of the wedge boundary could serve to further locally enhance
hodograph curvature and allow for the development of a brief,
line-embedded tornado or two. Thus, it will be especially
important to monitor the evolution of the wedge and where its
boundary ends up as storms approach.

The SPC has maintained a Slight Risk (level 2 out of 5) in their Day
1 (7 AM today through 7 AM Sunday) Convective Outlook for west-
central Georgia. Overall, the severe threat will diminish as the
front advances through the area. There will also be a Marginal Risk
(level 1 out of 5) after 7 AM on Sunday in portions of central and
east Georgia. Here, large-scale ascent ahead of the front will be
less substantial than when it entered the forecast area, although
isolated storms could tap into modest SBCAPE and strong low-level
shear to become strong to severe.

Rainfall/Flooding:
With precipitable water values of 1-1.5 inches immediately ahead
of the front, rainfall rates are expected to be quite high.
However, the front will have a quick progression as it sweeps
across the state, which should limit rainfall totals overall.
These totals have come down slightly from the previous forecast
run, ranging from 0.5 inch in east-central Georgia to 1.25 inch
across far north Georgia. Locally higher amounts will be possible
with stronger storms that occur and in the higher elevations due
to terrain enhancement. It should be noted that wet antecedent
conditions will remain in the wake of the heavy rainfall from
Wednesday/Thursday, with ample soil moisture and many rivers
remaining elevated or in minor flood state. The rainfall
associated with this system could lead to additional river
flooding concerns and isolated instances of flash flooding. WPC
has scaled back the Slight Risk (level 2 out 4) for Excessive
Rainfall to the portions of far north Georgia, with only a
Marginal Risk (level 1 out of 4) elsewhere across north Georgia.

Finally, given the low-level jet and tight pressure gradient in the
vicinity of the low and the front, strong gradient winds will be
possible late tonight into Sunday. At this time, confidence is high
that the highest elevations of far north Georgia will see the
strongest wind gusts, which could reach as high as 40 mph. Because
of this, a Wind Advisory has been issued for the far northern tier
and will be in effect from 12 AM tonight until 12 PM on Sunday.
Winds will remain elevated and shift to northwesterly in the wake of
the front. Colder and drier air will quickly advance into the
forecast area, with temperatures dropping into the upper 30s to low
40s across north Georgia by sunset, and cooling set to continue
through the overnight period when the long term period begins.

Monday through Friday Weather Highlights:

The most noteworthy aspect of the weather for the upcoming workweek
should be a storm system that will affect Georgia during the middle
part of the week. This opportunity for precipitation should feature
two merging shortwaves, one from the Pacific Northwest and the other
from Canada. Timing discrepancies related to how and when the models
merge these two features are leading to some uncertainty in the
timing of the precipitation forecast. Consequently the period with
precipitation chances in our current forecast (between Tuesday night
and Thursday morning) is likely to broad. Later forecasts will
should narrow the window to something closer to 12 to 24 hours in
length. If trends follow the ensemble mean this should end being a
peak in rainfall potential on Wednesday. Surface wind flow patterns
(from the north) and guidance from the GEFS and EPS suggest that
instability will be lacking with his system. Thus severe weather is
not expected. While rain is the favored precipitation type, there
continues to be a small chance (10-25%) for impactful wintry weather
in the north Georgia Mountains. The chances are primary being driven
by guidance from the EPS, with snow being most probably Wednesday
night.

Arctic air should surge south Thursday and Friday as surface high
pressure (near 1040 mb) builds south from Canada. As a result of
this, below average temperatures are likely (>80% chance) both days.
Just how far below average is still in doubt though, with the GEFS
and EPS means still indicating 8 to 10 degrees of spread between the
25th and 75th percentiles of the temperature guidance. The potential
exists for Atlanta to be limited to a high in the 30s Thursday (61%
chance via the NBM), and for morning lows in the teens across north
Georgia Friday morning.

MVFR ceilings have developed across central Georgia, including
MCN/CSG, and are spreading north. These MVFR ceilings are expected
to arrive at the ATL sites and AHN within the next couple of
hours. Precipitation will increase in coverage through the early
morning hours, with showers becoming widespread across north
Georgia by mid-morning and through the afternoon. Showers will be
more scattered in central Georgia during this time period.
Ceilings are forecast to lower to IFR by 14-15Z, with LIFR and
visibilities of 2SM or less becoming possible after 18Z in north
Georgia. Winds will 8-14 kts through the period, mainly from E
until shifting to SE around sunset today. Thunder chances will
remain too low to mention in any TAFs until storms approach ahead
of a cold front after midnight and into early Sunday morning.

Another storm system will bring a line of thunderstorms and
additional heavy rainfall to the area late tonight into Sunday.
There is a chance that a few thunderstorms with this system could
become strong to severe, capable of producing localized damaging
wind gusts. A brief tornado also cannot be ruled out.

River flooding will also linger through the weekend into early
next week in portions of north Georgia

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday...

Scattered thunderstorms will continue to move across central and
east Georgia on Sunday morning. Isolated strong to severe storms
could produce localized damaging wind gusts.

There is a chance for light snow across portions of far north
