.SYNOPSIS...An upper level trough continues on the approach, cold
and wintry weather patterns unfold. Rivers are receding as
precipitation lightens up, allowing major stem rivers to exit flood
stage. The weekend may see a light showers with dry and chilly
weather expected early next week.

.DISCUSSION...As the cold core upper level trough digs into the
area, concerns for low elevation snow/mixed precip/small hail have
been raised and rightfully so. Small hail especially can and has
wreaked havoc on motorists as it melts when accumulated onto warmer
pavement, creating an ice sheet and making commuting hazardous. That
said, southerly flow aloft has remnants of moist sub tropical air.
Though scant, this moist air has enough warmth to limit the effects
of the cold air mass, restricting the type of precip to liquid
droplet form rather than dendritic or supercooled aggregate being
perpetually suspended and accruing more ice by updraft-(hail). Model
soundings have freezing levels at low elevation and so some of the
components are in place for coastal hail and low elevation snow,
while other components are weak such as updraft and instability. An
initial period of hail has already occurred offshore and still
ongoing as of 12z. Temperatures overnight on the cost have been a
bit too warm but this could change today as the dynamics become more
favorable as the trough approaches and cold air advection continues
along with increased instability by the late morning-afternoon today.
Interior Del Norte and the northern Humboldt interior have below
freezing temperatures and likely snowfall as the MRMS mix of sensors
are indicating mtn snow falling as of 13z and several hours before.
Flood warnings for the Russian River at Hopland and Navarro are
ongoing as they have both crested in stage height and will continue
to recede, dropping below flood stage later today. River forecasts
show a future pulse around Friday, likely in response to the weak
Atmospheric River previously mentioned.
There may be a brief break in the rain tonight before another round
of rain and snow on Thursday. Snow levels are expected to be higher
with this next event, around 2500 to 3000 feet. So there may still
be impacts on the highway passes.
Friday and Saturday the upper level trough remains near the area.
This will keep temperatures chilly, especially the overnight lows.
Some very light precip is possible, but at this point it is
less likely. Sunday and Monday cool and dry conditions are expected.

this evening as conditions alternate between VFR & MVFR categories.
Conditions are expected to remain through the morning with southerly
winds switching to SE winds by the afternoon. Ceilings currently
forecasted to remain elevated around 2-3kft AGL with a moderately
strong SSW wind shear along the coast at 1.5-2kft AGL. Inland there
is a higher chance of showers impacting categories. In addition, the
NAMNEST is forecasting a valley inversion to develop tomorrow night
that could possibly create freezing rain at KUKI.

.MARINE...Winds will turn southwesterly and strengthen this
morning as a surface low pressure center passes over the
Washington/Oregon coast. Small craft advisory conditions are likely
with 25 to 30 knot gusts and 7 to 10 foot seas, especially in the
northern waters. Scattered convection embedded within lingering rain
showers is also possible, leading to the potential for small hail
over the coastal waters. Several small to moderate swells will make
for a conflicting sea state for the remainder of the week as winds
turn northerly again by Friday as yet another surface low pressure
center passes over central California.
