AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
1201 AM PDT Wed May 28 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Warmer weather will continue through late week. Hot
temperatures likely Friday and Saturday for the interior before a
quick trend downward next week. Gusty winds possible this weekend
and early next week.
KEY MESSAGES:
-Moderate to some areas of Major HeatRisk are forecast Friday and
Saturday for the interior
-85% to 95% chance for high temperatures to exceed 100 F in the
warmer interior valleys on Friday
-50% to 75% probability for high temperatures to exceed 100 F in the
warmest interior valleys on Saturday
&&
.DISCUSSION...High pressure ridging has built back in over the area
today. A weak cutoff low moving into southern California today
weakens the ridge slightly and could bring some minor moisture and
instability to the high terrain of Trinity county where a shower or
a stray lightning strike isn't out of the question. Probabilities
remain low: 15% or less for rain and 10% or less for thunder. Some
CAMs are showing a few blips, so kept a chance for showers in the
forecast. A weak trough and decaying front will clip the region
Thursday, increasing cloudcover and currently only bringing less
than 10% chance for trace amounts of precipitation to far north Del
Norte.
A Rex Block pattern builds in Friday and Saturday, bringing much
warmer temperatures to the interior, with triple digit heat forecast
and highly probable. NBM currently now holds a 85% to 956% chance
for high temperatures to exceed 100 F Friday in the warmer interior
valleys. Probabilities for 100 F or higher on Saturday have trended
downward a bit as the ridge weakens some and afternoon breezes could
allow for better mixing. Still, the probability for triple digit
temperatures remain at 50-75% for the warmest valleys. Regardless,
the combination of the forecast high temperatures with some warmer
overnight lows, a lack of acclimation to this relatively early-
season heat wave will create widespread Moderate to some areas of
Major HeatRisk. Caution is advised with outdoor activity.
Ensembles continue to depict influence of a trough late Saturday to
Sunday, quickly lowering temperatures. There is questions in the
depth of this trough, and how far south it digs, but there is the
potential for an anomalously cold upper trough to deepen and move in
from the north early next week. This could mean an even more
dramatic cooldown of temperatures, late season precipitation or even
thunderstorm activity depending on how the low evolves. The Climate
Prediction Center is leaning towards above normal precipitation for
day 6-10 over CA. Strong to very strong northerly winds are
beginning to take shape in the forecast over the weekend, but the
strength of these winds will also be determined by how the low
evolves. NBM holds high chances for gusts over 40 mph Sunday (50%-
80%) for much of the coast and interior ridges. There are also
decent probabilities for gusts of 45 mph for the more exposed
coastal headlands. JB/JJW

.AVIATION...Widespread stratus in place this morning across the
area and this includes the coastal terminals. Generally these seem
to be IFR, but some locally lower periods are possible. Farther
south this stratus is spreading inland in Mendocino county. Ukiah is
currently seeing light northerly winds and the stratus lower is only
around 1500 feet deep so don't expect this to get into Ukiah this
morning. Some breaks in the clouds are expected for the coastal
areas around midday, but with the approaching trough it doesn't look
they will stay clear very long. The inversion is expected to weaken
and the marine layer may deepen both of which will help to lift CIGS
into the MVFR category. MKK
&&
.MARINE...The northerly winds continue to weaken as a very weak
front approaches the area. At the immediate coast some of the winds
have turned southerly and increased to around 5 to 10 kt. This
afternoon the front brings some light southwest winds into the outer
waters mainly north of Cape Mendocino. In addition to this the main
wave in the waters is a 5 to 6 foot wave at 10 seconds and this
generally expected to continue through Thursday.
The front is expected to pass late tonight. Thursday morning
mediately behind the front winds are expected to rapidly increase
to 15 to 25 kt by the late afternoon. Winds will remain fresh to
strong Friday. Saturday strong to near gale force winds are possible
with these most likely south of Cape Mendocino. Saturday night and
Sunday strong gales are possible. Confidence is increasing on these
as model agrees continues to improve. The strongest winds are
expected to be Sunday afternoon or evening. There is some model
guidance, including the ECMWF model, showing that these will come in
slightly later on Sunday and last through Sunday night. These
difference becomes bigger on Monday. MKK
&&
.COASTAL FLOODING...A new moon lunar cycle is bringing
higher than usual tides over the next couple of days. A near 0.5
FT positive tidal anomaly continues to bring tides close to
Coastal Flood Advisory level criteria begins (8.8 FT). If the
current near 0.5 ft tidal anomaly persists, Coastal Flood Advisory
conditions may nearly be reached again near midnight tonight.
There will also be large negative tides near -2 ft through
Thursday morning. The swings from these levels, particularly from
high to low, will create swift, outgoing currents in channeled
waterways.
