AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...Sneaker wave and large surf risk continues Friday and
this weekend. A modest Atmospheric River storm is forecast to arrive
Friday afternoon, followed by a series of storm systems Saturday and
Sunday. Expect periods of moderate to heavy rainfall and strong
and gusty southerly winds Friday and Saturday, and likely Sunday
over the coastal headlands and exposed ridges. Additional
potentially strong storm systems are possible early to late next
week.

KEY MESSAGES:

- Risk of sneaker waves and large surf continues Friday and this
weekend.

- Atmospheric River arrives to the area Friday into Saturday
bringing periods of moderate to heavy rain and a minor flood risk.

- A series of storms systems will follow Saturday and Sunday,
  bringing periods of moderate to locally heavy rainfall and a
  continued minor flood risk

- Strong and gusty south winds likely at times Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday with the strongest winds up to 60 mph over the exposed ridges
and coastal headlands in Del Norte and Humboldt

- Light mountain snow over Scott Mountain Pass, with snow levels
  dropping as low as 4500 ft Saturday night into Sunday

-Additional potentially strong storm systems possible early to mid
next week

.DISCUSSION...Friday will mark the transition into an extended
active weather pattern. A deep and expansive Aleutian low will drive
in an atmospheric river type system into the Pacific Northwest
Friday. Multiple disturbances will rotate off this low. The
atmospheric river with impact Northern CA with gusty to strong winds
and moderate to heavy precipitation later Friday through Sunday.

Southerly winds will increase throughout Friday. Winds Friday will
be strongest Friday afternoon with the arrival of the strong frontal
boundary and associated atmospheric river. 925mb winds will be
45kts over portions of the north coast and up to 50kts in the core
of the barrier jet. This will support wind gust up to 45 mph for
some of the coastal headlands and ridges, mainly in Del Norte
County. Peak gusts of 30 to 35 mph are likely along the Humboldt
coast. A Wind Advisory remains in place for Del Norte County.

Moderate to heavy rainfall rates are expected. HREF has very high
probabilities (80%) for 6 hour rates over 1 inch per hour for the
Del Norte coast as well as south to southwest facing slopes of Del
Norte Friday evening through Friday night with this first storm
system. The highest total rainfall with this system is forecast for
Del Norte County where 1.0 to 2.5 inches is expected. Deterministic
guidance has backed off slightly in total amounts farther south in
Humboldt where 0.5 to 1.5 inch is forecast. Southern Mendocino to
Lake County will struggle to reach over a quarter inch, but the
southerly oriented ridges may accumulate a half inch.

A cold upper trough with an associated surface low will clip the
region late Friday through Saturday. Models have been wavering run-
to-run for the southern extent of the coldest 500 mb air (down to
-28C). The cold air aloft will contribute to modest surface CAPE
 over 200 J/kg and very steep lapse rates (7-8 C/km). The dynamics
 of this system include the arrival of the exit region of a strong
 150kt 250mb jet streak which favors enhanced broad ascent.
 Soundings show strong deep layer shear 50-60 kts with a largely
 unidirectional profile. This setup, if the higher instability
 pushes far enough south, would be conducive of a band of
 linear/QLCS type convection over the ocean with likely impacts
 over the Del Norte coast and into the Humboldt region. The main
 concern would be momentum mixing of 35 to 50 mph wind gusts, and
 locally 60 mph gusts along any organized bowing convective lines
 that push over the coast. High resolution guidance is beginning
 to resolve such structures Saturday morning with the main line,
 with continued thunderstorm chances (20%) through Saturday
 afternoon when focus shifts to mainly Del Norte County. Bursts of
 heavy rainfall rates of 0.3 to 0.6 inches per hour will be
 possible.

Apart from the strong convective showers or thunderstorms, another
broad area of strong southerly winds will develop Saturday while
bands of moderate to heavy precipitation move through. Given the
previously described dynamics, and 925 mb winds of 40 to 50 kts,
stronger winds than Friday are likely and forecast. Gusts from 40 to
55 mph is forecast over the coastal headlands and higher terrain of
interior Del Norte and northern Humboldt...although up to 60 mph is
possible over the highest terrain. A High Wind Watch is out for Del
Norte County, and additional larger coverage Wind Advisories will be
required. Additional total rainfall with this system will be less
than Friday (0.5 to 1.5 inches for Northern Humboldt to Del Norte,
with locally higher amounts from potential thunderstorms), but
the convectively enhanced rainfall rates on the freshly saturated
ground will promote more rapid rises in small streams and rivers,
minor flood impacts to urban areas, and debris on roadways.

Under developing zonal flow, a third impactful weather system will
take shape Sunday in the form of a shortwave trough and potential
closed surface low. Interestingly, the higher end of NBM wind gust
depiction (90th percentile) shows potential for better coverage of
lower elevation coastal zones to see gusts over 40 mph. There is
even a small percentage (10% of ensemble members) of 60 to 65 mph
gusts in places like Arcata. The low does look like it will be
weakening on approach, and this potential caliber of wind gusts will
likely be localized around where the compact low ends up coming
ashore. There are also some indications another stream of
moderate to heavy rainfall will accompany the low, currently
looking to be focused in Del Norte County. NBM currently has 60%
chances for 6 hour rainfall over half inch. If the low weakens
faster there will be less of a wind and rain threat.

Ridging will attempt to build in early next week. The amplitude
of the ridge will determine if the continued active Pacific storm
track takes aim farther south over N CA. Deterministic models are
attempting to resolve more strong systems to weaken the ridge and
clip N CA early to mid next week. Ensembles have consistently
outlined another atmospheric river type system late next week over
the Pacific Northwest with potential influence further south. JJW

.AVIATION...South to southeast winds are starting to develop at
KACV and KCEC ahead of a strong frontal boundary. The HREF continues
to show 50 to 80 percent probabilities of a ceiling below 3,000 feet
so have this in the forecast for KACV and KCEC at times this
morning. As it gets towards daybreak the low level clouds are
expected to clear and bring VFR conditions. Some low clouds may also
get into KUKI this morning as they won't really be impact by the
winds, however confidence is low on these. This afternoon winds will
pick up ahead of the front. Gusts of 35 to 40 kt are possible at
KCEC this afternoon. Winds are expected to lighter at KACV, but they
still may see gusts of 25 kt. As the front moves onshore with strong
winds aloft this may create some low level wind shear. MKK

.MARINE...The large long period wave has built into the waters this
morning to around 12 feet at 17 seconds. Some of the buoys are
showing larger waves at times and this may be indicative of some
larger sets. Southerly winds are starting to build into the northern
waters with the 04Z ASCAT pass showing 10 to 15 kt. These are
expected to increase more quickly than previously expected in the
outer waters so have started the gale warning at 10Am. As the front
moves across the area there will likely be a short period of some
near gale or gale force gusts in the inner waters. At this time it
doesn't look like they will last long enough or cover a wide enough
area to warrant a gale warning. These winds are expected to peak in
the later afternoon or early evening as the front moves across the
waters. Wind driven waves are expected to quickly build to 5 to 9
feet with the largest waves in the north. This will combine with the
ongoing swell of around 10 to 12 feet at 15 seconds.

A secondary area of low pressure moves by to the northwest of the
area early on Saturday. This has the potential to bring another
round of gale force winds. At this point these look to be limited to
the northern portion of the northern outer waters. The NAM and the
FV3 show gales a bit more widespread with the surface low closer to
the area. This will need to be watched as it gets closer and a gale
warning may be need for the northern outer waters.

Once this moves through a large swell is expected to move into the
waters Saturday afternoon and overnight. The models have trended
higher with this swell and now the GFS wave model and the NBM waves
are both peaking around 15 to 20 feet at 14 seconds. The coverage of
18 feet or higher has expanded into the southern waters so have
added a hazardous seas warning to highlight this. Sunday the models
are now starting to show another area of low pressure forming and
moving by just to the north of the area. There is still a lot of
uncertainty in the strength and location of this low, but it has the
potential to bring another round of gale force gusts to the northern
outer waters. This will need to be monitored in future model runs.
Lighter winds are expected on Monday with the potential for another
round of southerly winds Monday night and Tuesday. Wednesday and
Thursday there is some agreement that high pressure and northerly
winds will return. MKK

.BEACH HAZARDS...The next long period NW swell is moving through the
waters this morning with breakers of 15 to 20 feet. There will
likely be some set behavior this morning but this will become more
masked as the southerly winds increase this afternoon. A much larger
wave event is expected Saturday night and Sunday. A 15-20 foot swell
with breakers near 20 ft. The closer proximity of the wave
generation region will probably keep swell periods around 13-15
seconds. A high surf advisory may be need to highlight this. MKK
