AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
454 AM PDT Thu May 1 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Dry weather with above normal interior high temperatures
expected again today. Chance of rain and interior thunderstorms are
forecast for Friday afternoon through Saturday. Much cooler temperatures
and strong blustery winds expected this weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Coastal stratus has been developing offshore and along portions of
the coast overnight. Stratus should clear out for inland sections
of the coastal forecast zones, but may linger or reform near the
coastline all day. Stratus coverage will expand and push deeper
into the coastal river valleys tonight-Friday morning. Otherwise,
expect abundance sunshine with above normal temperatures in the
interior again today.

A 500mb trough will approach late on Friday and a few thunderstorms
will be possible over NE Trinity County. Legacy SREF and NBM
indicate 15-20% chance of thunder late Friday afternoon and evening.
Main threat from these very short-lived diurnally triggered
storms will be cloud-to-ground strikes. CAPE is quite sparse and
forcing weak. Trough should induce a push of deeper humidity and
some light rain will be possible as the moisture intersects with
the coastal terrain. Not much rain is expected Friday evening
through Saturday, generally less than a tenth of an inch. Main
impacts following the passage of this trough will be strong and
gusty northerly winds on Saturday. NBM means has gust up to 25-35
mph with windier areas around 40-45 mph. A few wind prone sites
could gust to 50 mph on Sat, over the King Range and around Pt St
George and Cape Mendocino. Even inland areas will get breezy and
cool below normal. Sites in the 80s today will struggle to reach
65F on Saturday thanks to the blustery winds.

Strong and gusty coastal northerlies expected to continue on
Sunday (perhaps slightly stronger) as a ridge builds offshore
while a surface low/trough develops over the interior. Gusts to
over 40 mph are highly probable for the coastal headlands and
ridges, especially in King Range. Deterministic model guidance
has a 925mb speed max around 50-60kt developing offshore this
weekend, Saturday night into Sunday. NBM probabilities remain
50% or less for gusts > 40 mph for most areas. It will be windy
this weekend, even for inland areas. A secondary low level speed
max will also form over the central valley by Sunday. Robust N-NE
winds are expected over the higher elevations of eastern Mendocino
and eastern Lake Counties. Windy conditions expected to continue
on Monday, but should diminish some as the low tracks SEWRD and
stability increases in response to warming aloft.

Frost will also be a distinct possibility early Sunday morning in
the valleys of Trinity and NRN Mendo if winds become calm and
skies remain clear. Early morning valley frost possible again
Monday morning.

High temps in the interior will begin to rebound above seasonal
averages (70s to lower 80's) early to mid next week as a narrow
positive tilt 500mb ridge axis leans over into the PAC NW while
the closed low centered over the SW U.S. slowly meanders eastward.
Greater uncertainty arises with an upstream trough mid to late
week with fairly low probabilities (<10% chance) for rain. DB

.AVIATION...Stratus has returned overnight to the Humboldt Bay area
with some patches forming offshore. IFR ceilings are likely at the
coastal terminals this morning. Models are showing some clearing
this afternoon with stratus lingering right offshore. WNW winds
could bring periodic impacts to the terminals this afternoon.
Regardless, stratus will likely move onshore in the evening and
overnight, bringing IFR/MVFR ceilings. UKI may briefly also see
stratus this morning, but any ceilings will likely lift shortly
after sunrise. Models are showing a deeper stratus layer tonight,
which improves the chance for stratus bring advected into UKI. JB

&&

.MARINE...Northerly winds and steep wind waves have eased slightly
overnight and are expected to continue to ease today, especially
nearshore. A weak front moving through tonight into Friday will
bring lighter southerly winds across the area, but northerlies are
expected to ramp up again behind the front Friday night into the
weekend. Gale force gusts of 35 to 40 kts are possible even nearshore,
with the strongest winds likely Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
These winds will bring very steep seas of around 12-15 ft at 10
seconds. Winds remain elevated but begin to ease Monday, and
continue to gradually ease into the middle of next week. JB
