.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 318 AM CST Mon Mar 3 2025

Water vapor imagery overlaid with 500 mb heights and winds
shows the closed mid level low that will be bringing us a
smorgasbord of weather centered over the Great Basin region,
with the accompanying trough extending to the south into
Southern California. A 70+ knot 500 mb jet digs southward just
off the coast of California, rounding the base of the trough
over Baja California, and extending northeastward into the
Desert Southwest, with ascent evident out ahead of this system
across the south central high plains. Mid level ridging is in
place over our CWA, with south southwesterly 850 mb winds
increasing, especially across eastern Kansas. Current conditions
across the region are characterized by temperatures in the
upper 30s to lower 40s for most locations as of 3 PM with a few
passing high clouds and south southeasterly winds ranging from 5
to 13 mph.

By mid afternoon, the closed H5 low is progged to advance
eastward toward the Four Corners region, with the H5 jet
extending into the TX/OK Panhandles and SW Kansas. Meanwhile,
southerly 850 mb flow will increase substantially over eastern
Kansas and western Missouri. At the surface, a ~988 mb low
enters into SE Colorado, with the pressure gradient tightening
and yielding breezy southerly surface winds around 15 mph. All
of this will lead to continued theta e advection across the
region. High temperatures this afternoon should reach around 60
degrees, with dewpoints rising from the 20s at present time to
the mid 40s by 6 pm this afternoon.

As we head into tonight, the mid level low/trough crosses the
Southern Rockies and ejects into the Southern Plains,
encouraging rapid development and deepening of the surface low
over the south central Plains. By 6 AM Tuesday, the center of
the 500 mb low is projected to be over western Kansas, with a
southerly 70+ knot mid level jet extending northward into
eastern Kansas. Dewpoints should have increased into the low to
perhaps even the mid 50s by this point, with PWATs on the order
of 0.9" to 1.1", which is right around climatological maximums
per the SPC sounding climatology page. Meanwhile, a surface
boundary will be advancing from west to east across eastern
Kansas, approaching the MO border. CAM guidance suggests a line
of showers and storms developing along this boundary across east
central Kansas by around midnight tonight, entering into our
CWA across our far eastern KS counties perhaps as early as 3 AM
Tuesday. Per the SPC HREF, up to 1000 J/kg of MU CAPE may be
present (although little to no surface based CAPE). The 06z HRRR
shows this line entering into the KC metro by around 6 to 8 AM
Tuesday, and could have some gusty winds with. After this, CAMs
suggest a large shield of rain with perhaps a few embedded
thunderstorms encompassing most of the region by around 10 AM
Tuesday. This should exit to the northeast by early Tuesday
afternoon, as the dry slot of the cyclone enters into our
region. There will be a chance for redevelopment of isolated to
scattered showers and thunderstorms by mid to late afternoon as
the surface low approaches and moves overhead of Kansas City,
yielding destabilization and surface based CAPE up to 750 J/kg
and 60 knots of 0 to 6 km bulk shear. This would allow for the
potential for well organized updrafts and a strong to severe
thunderstorm or two. SPC has maintained the marginal risk for
areas generally along and south of US Highway 36. Aside from the
severe threat, locally moderate to heavy rain will be possible,
with 1 to 2 inches of rain possible. WPC has maintained the
marginal risk for excessive rainfall for most of the CWA, with a
slight risk across far northwestern and north central Missouri.

By Tuesday evening, the surface low should be over north
central Missouri, with the H5 low centered just SE of the KC
metro. Precipitation will continue on the backside of the low
across NW Missouri and NE Kansas as temperatures begin rapidly
cooling. A big question is how quickly will thermal profiles
cool. The NAM Nest is the fastest at this time, with thermal
profiles supporting snow by as early as 9 pm Tuesday across far
NW Missouri. Other models, including the HRRR, keep thermal
profiles too warm for snow until closer to midnight. However,
strong dynamic cooling of the column is very possible, and the
NAM Nest very well may have a better handle on it than other
models. A deformation zone is likely to develop somewhere in the
vicinity of SW Iowa and into NW Missouri and NE Kansas Tuesday
night into early Wednesday morning, with decent snowfall rates
possible. Meanwhile, as the surface low continues to deepen and
drift into north central Illinois, very strong north
northwesterly winds will develop across the CWA late Tuesday
into Wednesday. The ECMWF extreme forecast index shows greater
than 0.9 and a shift of tails of 1 for areas along and north of
Interstate 70, suggesting a high probability for a highly
unusual or extreme wind event. Gusts up to 55 to 60 mph will be
possible, and snow paired with these 55 to 60 mph winds will
likely yield near whiteout conditions across NE Kansas and NW
Missouri tomorrow night into early Wednesday morning. As such, a
winter storm watch has been issued (this is effectively a
blizzard watch), with the potential for this to be upgraded to a
blizzard warning. Current snow grids show snowfall up to an
inch within the blizzard watch area, but it is possible that
snowfall could exceed 1", potentially up to around 2" or even 3"
(NBM gives around a 60% chance for snow to exceed 2" at
Maryville). Aside from the blizzard watch, a high wind watch
remains in effect for portions of the area from 9 PM Tuesday
through noon Wednesday. Much colder temperatures are also
expected for Wednesday, with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s
and much colder wind chills.

High pressure builds in over the region by overnight Wednesday
into Thursday morning, finally relaxing the winds, with lows in
the mid 20s for most locations. Temperatures moderate a bit by
Thursday, and then likely return to the 50s by Friday, although
quite a bit of uncertainty remains for Friday as the NBM 25th to
75th percentiles for MaxT at MCI are 48 and 60 degrees,
respectively. The active weather pattern continues, as another
mid/upper trough is progged to translate across the Plains and
into the Midwest Thursday night into Friday night. This will
bring a chance for some light precipitation, primarily in the
form of rain, although some rain snow mix or light snow could be
possible toward the Iowa border. However, little to no snow
accumulations are anticipated at this time.

 A marginal to slight risk of excessive rainfall is forecast for the
 region on Tuesday.

 A marginal risk for severe thunderstorms is forecast for the region
 on Tuesday.

 Very windy conditions are expected Tuesday night into Wednesday,
 with northwest winds gusting up to 45 to 55 mph.

 Rain will change over to snow Tuesday night into early Wednesday
morning. Whiteout conditions will be possible across NW Missouri and
NE Kansas.
