- Light snow chances tonight have decreased some (now 10-25%
  north of Hwy 30). If snow reaches the ground, minor
  accumulations under a half inch is expected.

- There remains high confidence (>90%) of an impactful winter
  storm Wednesday into Wednesday night. The heaviest snowfall
  rates are expected during the afternoon and evening hours. A
  winter storm watch has been expanded to include most of the
  forecast area.

- Active weather pattern continues into the weekend, with
  another storm system to bring accumulating snow and colder
  temperatures this weekend.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Issued at 223 PM CST Mon Feb 10 2025

Mostly clear skies and quiet conditions were seen this morning, with
high pressure overhead. Morning 12z DVN sounding showed a rather dry
atmospheric profile, with RH values below 40% through the column.
Satellite imagery shows high clouds beginning to move in from the
west, with surface observations and radar mosaics showing some light
snow across South Dakota and southwest MN.

This Evening-Overnight...increasing clouds will be seen, as an FGEN
band of light snow tracks over northern IA. Latest model data
suggests this snow to weaken as it nears eastern IA and with the
aforementioned dry atmospheric profile, I am not anticipating much
of this to reach the ground. A dusting up to a few tenths of an inch
at best is forecast north of Highway 30. Lows tonight will be in the
single digits near Waterloo to the lower 20s in west central IL.

Tuesday...high pressure will build into the Midwest with dry
conditions. Highs in the teens/low 20s north to the upper 20s/low
30s south is forecast with clouds increasing late in the day ahead
of approaching storm system.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Issued at 223 PM CST Mon Feb 10 2025

Tuesday Night-Wednesday Night...a strong winter storm is
expected to bring hazardous travel to the area on Wednesday. A
positively tilted shortwave trough will track east over the four
corners region becoming neutrally tiled spreading snow across
the Great Plains. A general consensus on the surface low track
from the latest guidance is from eastern TX at 12z Wed to
western KY at 00z Thu. Looking further aloft, the 850mb low to
track from west central MO at 18z Wed to north central IL at 00z
Thu which will thankfully keep this entire event as snow for
us, with no precip type issues as in previous weeks. A general
rule of thumb that is very useful for heavy snow is the observed
-5C 850mb isotherm typically bisects the heaviest snowfall, which
would occur in our southeast half of the CWA is this were to verify.
Something to monitor in later shifts. You also need a strengthening
850mb low which this system will have.

All 12z deterministic models and their ensembles at this time range
have come in slightly wetter with this system (now in the 0.30-0.60"
range from the northwest to southeast). These values combined with
SLRs in the 13:1 to 16:1 range yield snowfall amounts between 6-8
inches of light fluffy snow across much of the area. For this
reason, I have expanded the winter storm watch to the northeast
beginning at 6am Wednesday until 3am Thursday. Later shifts will
further refine the timing and amounts as new model data comes in the
coming days.

Regarding more specific timing, snowfall should start just prior to
daybreak Wednesday and expand in coverage through the morning hours.
Snowfall rates during the morning are expected to remain under a
0.5"/hr. Some slick spots on area roads will be possible during the
AM commute. Strong omegas in the deep saturated DGZ will help
promote high snowfall rates over 1"/hr at times, especially across
our southeast during the afternoon and evening hours. 6-hr snowfall
totals ending at 00z show widespread 3-4" totals and if higher SLRs
are realized in banded snow, then we could see amounts upwards of 4-
5 inches in this timeframe. In addition to the snow, north winds
between 10-15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph are forecast allowing for
some minor blowing and drifting snow on east-west roads. Motorists
should take their time and SLOW down when traveling on Wednesday.
Precipitation to end from west to east late Wednesday evening as the
surface low pulls away and tracks over Lake Erie.

Thursday-Friday...broad ridging aloft and a large surface high
to bring cold and dry conditions, especially over the fresh
snowpack. Have lowered temps a few degrees to account for this,
but wouldn't be surprised if some locations struggle to reach

Thursday night. Return flow develops on Friday will start the
slow "warm-up" ahead of next approaching system, with highs in
the upper 20s.

Friday Night-Saturday Night...a lead shortwave trough will track
east across the four corners region and into the southern Great
Plains with cyclogenesis occurring on the lee side of the Rockies.
As expected this far out, there is considerable differences in
solutions regarding the track, timing, and potential impacts with
this system. Accumulating snow is likely for much of the CWA.
Another thing that models seem to agree on with this system is it
will be progressive and out of the area by late Saturday night-early
Sunday. At this time, NBM probabilities of 6" or more is in the 20-
40% range.

Sunday-Early Next Week...much colder and mainly dry conditions are
forecast. 850mb temps progged in the -18C to -22C range over a
snowpack may bring single digit highs and sub zero lows for several
days. Snow and cold lovers rejoice while everyone else...Brrr!

Generally a VFR TAF cycle with just mid and high clouds through
the period. But there still is a chance(30%) for light snow and
MVFR CIGs/VSBYs getting into the CID/DBQ VCNTY from the west
overnight. That said, dry air continues in place and the precip activity
that is currently acrs central and northeast IA, may erode as it
tries to migrate eastward toward these sites. Incoming high
pressure gradient will continue to trend the light winds to the
north and increase to 10-15 KTs by early Tue morning. The wind
may become more northeast and diminish some by mid Tue evening
ahead of the next storm system that will bring snow by
Wednesday.

.DAY ONE...TONIGHT

There is a chance for some light snow mainly northwest of a Cedar
Rapids Iowa, to Freeport Illinois line. Any accumulation is
expected to be under 1 inch.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY

A winter storm is expected to impact the entire Outlook Area
Wednesday and Wednesday night. A Winter Storm Watch has been
issued for much of eastern Iowa, northeast Missouri, and northwest
Illinois. There is greater than a 60% chance of amounts over 6
inches of light fluffy snow for much of the Outlook Area. This
snow combined with north winds is expected to cause travel impacts
to both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Northwest
winds may continue to produce some drifting snow into the
Thursday morning commute.

Another storm system is forecast for Friday night through
Saturday, with additional accumulating snow possible.
