- Unseasonably warm temperatures, breezy southerly winds, and
  dry antecedent conditions will favor an elevated fire danger
  today. This threat will mainly be focused along and south of
  Interstate 80.

- Marginal Risk (level 1/5) for Severe weather in our northwest
  tonight for the low-end chance of elevated thunderstorms
  producing hail. Another Marginal Risk will be seen through
  much of the area on Wednesday, where all hazards will be
  possible. A Slight Risk (level 2/5) has been introduced in our
  far east. Confidence is low-medium on both severe chances at
  this time.

- Very gusty winds will be seen Wednesday and Wednesday night,
  as the surface low passes through the area. Headlines may be
  necessary as we get closer.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Today, we will start to see the upcoming system take shape in the
lee of the Rockies, over the Central Plains. With that, we will see
LLVL southerly winds pick up drastically, especially at 850 hPa.
Thus, we will see strong WAA push into our area today. With that, we
will see some moisture increase aloft, as well as surface
temperatures soaring well above normal. Temperatures through much of
the area will be in the low-mid 70s, with passing clouds. Winds will
also be breezy, with gusts between 20-30 mph possible. These winds
and dry antecedent conditions will prompt an elevated fire danger
today, generally along and south of Interstate 80. Aside from the
fire danger, it will be quite the beautiful day ahead of us.

Tonight, the newly developed surface low tracks directly towards our
forecast area. Current guidance shows the surface pressure at the
low's center dropping towards 985 hPa. Thus, with such a strong low
developing, strong gradient winds are expected to develop. While the
strongest winds won't be seen until Wednesday, the intensifying
pressure gradient over the area will help keep winds breezy through
the night, with spotty gusts of 20-30 mph still possible. Through
the night, the cold front that stalled out over the area will still
generally be draped over our north. This, with a strong LLJ pumping
into it, will lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms overnight.
This looks to remain north of Interstate 80, with the best chances
along and north of Highway 20. Confidence is low overall on the
chance for rain, as guidance largely comes in dry tonight. Although,
isolated-scattered showers/storms cannot be ruled out, given the
pattern in place. With that, we do have a Marginal Risk (level 1/5)
for severe weather over parts of our northwest tonight. If we do get
some showers and storms to develop, the environment will favor the
chance for isolated large hail, generally upwards to quarter
sized.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...

Wednesday and Wednesday Night...

Surface low approaches early Wednesday morning, with it passing
through the area by the mid afternoon hours, slowly. Both
ahead/behind the low will see very windy conditions, given the
strong pressure gradient induced by this storm. Although, as the low
passes directly overhead, winds will be a bit lighter. Overall
though, winds will generally be between 20-30 mph, with gusts
upwards to 40-50+ mph, especially in our western counties on the
back end of the low. Wind headlines are likely for some, if not much
of the forecast area on Wednesday.

Along with the strong winds, this system will bring widespread
precipitation to the forecast area. Much of this precipitation will
fall in the form of rain through the day on Wednesday, with the
transition to snow moving into the area Wednesday evening and night.
Given proximity to the low and existing, yet low, instability, we
will see thunderstorms through the day Wednesday. Guidance is
hinting at the potential for some strong to severe storms as well,
with environmental parameters favoring the potential for some mini
supercells, especially along the cold front as it passes through the
area. This is not realized well, with disagreements amongst guidance
on where these storms will initiate. For example, the HRRR has these
developing east of our forecast area, but the NAMnest has them
developing over our forecast area. This leads to a forecast
challenge. The HRRR/RAP suite do seem to mix out moisture rather
early in the day on Wednesday, which other guidance is not quite
showing. WRF guidance is similar to the NAM suite, holding the
moisture in the area and leading to a line of strong to severe
storms. So, this will truly be a battle for moisture. If we get the
moisture to hold back through much of the day Wednesday, the severe
threat will be here. Although, if the moisture does indeed mix out,
then the severe threat will decrease and stay east. Will mention the
potential for strong to severe storms, especially for counties along
and east of the Mississippi River. The SPC favors this, highlighting
much of our area in a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) for severe weather
through the day Wednesday, with a Slight Risk (level 2/5) for our
western Illinois counties. Primary hazards will be severe winds and
hail, but given such LLVL shear profiles, a few tornadoes cannot be
ruled out.

Wednesday evening and through the night, we will see the transition
to wet snow. This may be heavy at times, but we are not expecting
impactful accumulation from this at the time. Given the snow is
moving in after it has rained and after a very warm spell, any
snow falling will likely melt, at least on the pavements. Best
chance to see any accumulation from this will be on grassy or
elevated surfaces. With that said, deterministic and ensemble
guidance favor and inch or less for much of the area, with about
30-60% favorability. The best chance for closer to an inch or
upwards to 2" will be in our far northwest, where cold air moves
in quicker and snow is expected to fall a little longer. Strong
winds will also accompany the snow, which will lead to periods
of reduced visibility.

Thursday and Beyond...

Much of the precipitation should move out of the area by sunrise on
Thursday, leaving us with a cool and damp start to the day. Then,
weak ridging builds over the region Thursday, behind the potent low.
This will result in calmer winds than Wednesday, along with cooler
temperatures working in. Currently, we are expecting much of the
area to remain in the mid 40s to near 50 in our south, with mostly
clear skies by midday.

Beyond Thursday, we remain active. We are currently watching the
potential for two quick hitting systems, one to hit late on Friday,
with another to impact the area late on Sunday and into the night.
Temperatures will be well above freezing for the whole event on
Friday, keeping the precipitation type as rain. Sunday's system will
largely fall as rain, with cool air moving in on the backside, which
may allow for a transition to light snow. Both of these events look
to bring low QPF and seem to be non-impactful at this time. We will
continue to monitor and update accordingly as more guidance
continues to come in. Otherwise, it will be a gloomy weekend with
clouds and passing systems, aside from Saturday looking to be the
nicest day of this stretch. Temperatures will remain in the upper
40s to mid 50s, with seasonal breeziness.

Another strong extratropical cyclone will move through the
Midwest over the next 48 hours. Elevated convection will develop
over northeast Iowa after 06z/19 that may briefly result in
MVFR conditions. LLWS is marginal across much of eastern Iowa
but probabilities are slightly higher in southeast Iowa and east
of the Mississippi River. After 17z/19 more convection is
expected along an east of the Mississippi. After 20z/19 rain
will begin transitioning to snow in eastern Iowa with CIGS
collapsing.

Chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight, with a
Marginal Risk, level 1 of 5, for Severe Weather. The primary threats
will be isolated large hail and frequent lightning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY

Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected on Wednesday,
especially along the cold front that sweeps through the area that
afternoon and evening. Some of these storms may be strong to severe,
with all hazards possible. The Storm Prediction Center highlights
much of our area in a Marginal Risk, level 1 of 5, for Severe
Weather, with a Slight Risk, level 2 of 5, for parts of western
Illinois.

Cold air quickly moves in behind the cold front Wednesday evening
and night, with a transition from rain to snow expected. Much of
the area should see less than an inch of snow, with upwards to two
inches in our far northwest. Strong winds accompanying the snow
will result in periods of reduced visibility.
