.KEY MESSAGES...

* Dry and mild conditions today with highs in the low 50s

* A cold front tracks through tonight with temperatures dropping
  rapidly into the upper 20s to low 30s Saturday morning. A light
  rain-snow mix is possible as well.

* Low pressure brings chances for rain and snow to the region Sunday
  evening. Minor snow accumulations cannot be ruled out for the
  Thumb.

.DISCUSSION...

A low amplitude pattern sets up across CONUS for the next several
days, bringing alternating periods of dry weather and glancing
precipitation chances. Brief bout of high pressure ridging governs
conditions today, affording a quiet and pleasant early spring day
across SE Michigan. Highs climb into the lower 50s with help from
plentiful solar insolation and modest thickness advection. While
pockets of upper level cloud stream in throughout the day, current
GOES-16 infrared loop/upstream observations suggest this will be
transient and scattered to broken in coverage.

Pattern shift gets underway overnight with the passage of a cold
front early Saturday morning. Initial impacts from this system
arrive early this evening as a ~55 knot low level jet pushes into
the region. Breezy southwest flow thus develops a few hours before
sunset (gusts 30-35 mph) before the nocturnal inversion settles in.
The frontal passage itself does not occur until well after midnight.

Hi-res models have been quite aggressive in dropping temperatures 10-
15 degrees in the immediate wake of the front, meaning high
temperatures for the day will be observed before daybreak.
Precipitation chances rely on the phasing of two PV anomalies of
Canadian origin. Both systems lack moisture, with the stronger of
the two passing over northern lower MI which favors highest PoPs
over the Saginaw Valley/Thumb that taper off toward metro Detroit.
Temperatures are likely to drop below freezing especially to the
north which will support a quick transition from rain to snow.
Any accumulations should be minor and confined to grassy/elevated
surfaces, if they even materialize.

High pressure fills in quickly behind the frontal passage with deep
static stability/isentropic downglide building through the column. A
shallow layer of moisture persists at the top of the boundary layer
through the early part of the day (around 5.0 kft agl), settling
right within the DGZ to maintain flurries/light snow showers.

The more meaningful opportunity for precipitation arrives Sunday
evening as a deep Pacific PV anomaly pivots the leading arm of warm
advection/isentropic ascent into the region. Moisture looks to be of
much higher quality than tonight's system, with Gulf moisture
feeding into the isentropic slope. Thermal profiles of this system
will be very sensitive to temperature changes, as wet bulb
temperatures hold right around the freezing mark. The operational
NBM at this point advertises primarily a rain-snow mix with little
to no snow accumulation, although the long range ensemble suites are
a bit more bullish with minor snow accumulations especially in the
Thumb region Sunday night. As we get into the hi-res window, will
have to watch convective potential across the south which may
disrupt moisture transport as far north as SE Michigan. Once this
system departs, a longwave troughing pattern settles in for the
early half of next week.

.MARINE...

Southwest winds increase through the day as the gradient tightens in
response to an approaching arctic cold front dropping out of
northern Ontario. Preceding southwest flow still expected to only
top out around 30kts across the Saginaw Bay/central Lake Huron as
warm advection increases overlake stability limiting any gale
potential despite the favorable fetch. Winds over the rest of the
region hold closer to 20-25kts. Cold front eventually crosses
tonight-early Saturday bringing rain-snow showers as well as
ushering in renewed cold northwest flow. There still appears to be a
~2-4hr window along/immediately following the frontal passage for
gusts reach entry-level gales with local probabilistic guidance
holding around 40% to reach 34kts. The overall setup is on the
marginal side for both duration (3+ consecutive hours) as well as
strength with winds aloft largely below 40kts in the mid/upper 30kt
range. With the lower confidence have held off on any watches at
this time with the running forecast erring more on the side of only
sporadic gales for a few hours late tonight-early Saturday. Another
area of high pressure then briefly follows for Saturday-early Sunday.
