...SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL LATE TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY IMPACTING 
MUCH OF IOWA...

.Snow is expected to begin toward midnight tonight over western Iowa 
spreading into central and eastern Iowa after midnight. While snow 
is expected statewide, the highest snow accumulations will be over 
portions of central and southern Iowa with 5 to 8 inches expected. 
Snow covered and slick roads should be expected and create for 
hazardous travel. Snow rates will generally range from one quarter 
to three-quarters of an inch per hour. Visibility will be reduced in 
falling snow and blowing snow will also create minor to moderate 
impacts. The snow will taper off from west to east late Wednesday 
afternoon into Wednesday evening.

Those who have wanted more snow this winter will get their wish
this week with three different events of concern. Our pattern
will remain fairly fast and progressive, with the jet far enough
south to keep near to below normal and chances for snow every
several days. The first event was already underway north this
afternoon, although it was not being depicted well via radar
because of the shallow nature of the forcing. Visibilities of
1-2 miles in snow have been common although radar doesn't
suggest as much. The forcing associated with this event is
mainly thermodynamically driven and based below 5km with
moisture return west of the MS Valley H85/H7 ridge. The
associated theta-e advection will continue to produce snow north
and west through the evening, although snow rates should
diminish toward midnight as the theta-e advection weakens and
pushes east. The Dendritic Growth Zone (DGZ) at lower pressures
in this cold airmass also allows for increased super-saturation
potential with respect to ice, and also aligns with the better
vertical motion, increasing the potential for dendrites and
higher snow to liquid ratios. Have at least 20:1 ratios going,
and that may not be high enough, but still sufficient for
widespread 1-3" accumulations along and north of a Carroll to
Iowa Falls line. After the snow diminishes overnight, sprawling
northern Plains high pressure will reinforce our cold airmass.
Winds will not be too strong, but with temps into the single
digits below zero it won't take much to drop wind chills into
advisory range northwest (-25F) so a small Cold Advisory has
been issued for those areas.

By later Tuesday our attention will turn to a significant
winter storm which is expected to produce widespread moderate to
heavy snows across the Midwest. The parent short wave driving
this storm will drop through the Pacific NW tonight and reach
the central Plains early Wednesday resulting in snow starting
out ahead Tue night. The model suite is in fairly good agreement
trending this system a bit farther north than previous runs
resulting in the potential for higher snow accumulations into
the heart of IA. Theta-e advection will spread well into IA Tue
night and continue into Wed, with the 12z EC solution even
suggesting a hint of a trowel through the deformation zone
before departing. The deformation zone and associated kinematic
forcing will linger well into the afternoon however resulting in
a prolonged period of snowfall. While amounts look to be 6" or
greater south, and now into central IA where the Winter Storm
Watch has been expanded, this is more due to a prolonged
moderate snow event. Very few of the recent model Cobb runs
suggest rates approaching 1"/hr, however most have 0.4-0.7"/hr
rates through much of the daylight hours which should add up
over time even with come compacting. 13Z NBM probabilities of
>=6" of snow are now 50-100% in the watch area, with the high
end of that range southeast toward Ottumwa. Those probabilities
are fairly rare, and examination of Ottumwa climate records
would note that a 7+" daily snowfall would be in the top 23 in
the period of record (back to 1948). The cold, dry surface high
will remain in place through the Dakotas however, so while an
advisory will likely eventually be required along or just north
of the current watch northern boundary, confidence is low
farther northwest toward Estherville where low level
trajectories of dry air may limit amounts.

After a break Thursday, with more sub-zero temperatures that
morning, another snow event is expected late in the week with
little change in our overall pattern. A weaker short wave, but
with fairly phased thermodynamic and kinematic components, will
pass through the Midwest with a 70+% chance of measurable
snowfall over much of the area Fri night into Sat. 12Z EPS and
GEFS 24hr probabilities of >=0.1" are 50+% for much of the
forecast area. The end of the weekend looks dry, but yet another
chance for light snow will cycle through around Monday.
