Light winds this morning are expected to increase moderately to
around 12-18 Kts sustained as the HREF shows a weak southelry
850 mb jet mixing out by the early afternoon, as wind gusts on
the LAMP guidance shows the best potential for gusts in the
20-26 knot area in our western counties (i.e. Garden Liberal
Elkhart). Sky cover is not expected to change much, limiting the
warming potential from insolation. Currently the NBM temp is
for highs to struggle to about 40s degrees most areas with
warmer temps near the Colorado and OK lines. This is a warmer
bias than the latest NAM forecast which relegates the Lower
Plains to the upper 30s This Afternoon. Tonight the winds shift
out of the east-northeast in the boundary layer in a
backing/cold advection setup with overnight ls much colder in
the teens for Tuesday morning. These cold easterly winds will
persist into Tuesday where NBM is forecasting highs in the low
20s most areas, save the upper 20s for the Oklahoma state line
counties.

An active week with winter weather is up ahead with NBM mean
expected snowfall potential of several inches (1-5) across the
southern half of the forecast area. Higher amounts (relatively)
across the northern half of the area where the model would
support the strongest frontogenesis forced banding for the
longest duration (Wednesday 00z to 18z/Tuesday 6 pm until
Wednesday noon) supported by a max NBM mean ensemble member
forecast of around 7-8 inches. This lines up roughly from
Dighton to Hays. The episode should start out as all snow with
antecedent SLR’s (snow liquid ratios) ranging 12-15:1 across
the north Tuesday evening with a marked increase to up to
16-19:1 across the nw 1/3 of the forecast area before the time
snow ends late morning to early afternoon Wednesday.
Based on the latest NBM “expected amounts” we’d see the
heaviest snows mainly north of the U.S HWY 400 corridor, with
the NBM ensemble snow forecast showing a hint of enhance banding
between the KS 96 corridor and areas north of I-70 northeast of
Hays. However, uncertainty is high here as the latest EC/GFS
ensembles are only showing mean values at about 4.5 inches at
Hays, and it is fairly consistent across numerous 24 hours runs.
These lower values may be partially from the ensembles using a
10:1 SLR, which is far too low.

Another Winter Impact will be the cold apparent temperatures
expected Wednesday morning. As winds turn out of the north at
around 15 knots and combine with single digit 2m temperatures,
wind chills drop to around -10F (the lower boundary value for a
cold weather advisory issuance) over most of west central Kansas
which includes our northwest counties. Thursday Morning will be
similar with respect to a cold weather advisory as colder
Canadian air sinks farther south across the Plains - although
the winds will be lighter.

The overall pattern supports another system in the Great Plains
by next weekend as well, but with also of uncertainty in where
this system tracks, and as such uncertainty in amounts and type
if any at all. The ensembles center around the middle of the
weekend for around an inch of snow.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z TUESDAY/...

Aviation weather conditions were pretty good at the onset of
this TAF period with widespread VFR, high clouds, and a south-
southeast wind 10 to 15 knots. This evening, winds will weaken
to 8 knots or less and stratus is likely to develop in the
00-06Z window as light upslope easterly winds persist. At the
same time, an arctic cold front will move south in the 06-12Z
time frame, and when this front moves into southwest and west
central Kansas, ceiling and/or visibility is likely to fall well
into MVFR flight category, and perhaps IFR, however timing and
areal coverage of IFR flight category is fairly uncertain at
this time, so this TAF cycle, we will keep all terminals in MVFR
tomorrow morning.
