The focus this morning is on the fog that has overspread the
area behind last evening’s cold front. A 1033 mb surface high
pressures is spreading into eastern Kansas. The surface high in
combo with the weak trough over se CO, is setting up a BL mass
convergence zone roughly between the highways 83 and 283
corridors. Low clouds will linger most of the morning based on
HREF probabilities even as the dense fog improves to above one
half mile after sunrise. A dense fog advisory is in effect
through 10 am.

The ECMWF Canadian and GFS deterministic/control runs develop a
mature cyclone in Kansas by Saturday, that will result in
periods of rain, freezing rain and sleet/snow through the
Saturday night and Sunday period.

High temperatures on Saturday are a tell as to where the icing
impacts are most likely. The latest NBM would lay the surface
freezing line in the afternoon roughly along a Garden City to
Stafford line (roughly highway 156 corridor). The I-70 corridor
spends the entire day in the mid 20s while the tier counties
along the Oklahoma line rise into the 40s with no afternoon
falling temps. This is based on a collaborated NBM 25th
percentile temperature forecast for Saturday. Very light QPF is
being indicated by the models, so the patchy drizzle and
freezing drizzle is appropriate during the afternoon.

However as temperatures crash in the evening SREF indicates a
ramp up in chances for hourly rates of 0.05” per hour (around
10%) between 6 pm Saturday and midnight while in the same time
window the WSSI brings much of the area into the Minor Impacts
for adverse driving conditions - completely owing to ice
accumulation. Winter Storm Severity Index has now pushed the
eastern 1/3 or so of our area into the Moderate Impacts category
which equates to expected disruptions to daily life including
hazardous driving with possible closures and disruption to
infrastructure.

Once temperatures crash in the evening, and more cold air is
drawn southward, the sleet and snow become dominant. Still very
large uncertainty is in play with respect to total snow
accumulations as the ensemble member range of outcomes show
about 3 inches at minimum at Hays to a highs end (also at Hays)
of 15 inches. The expected amount at Hays coming it at 6 inches
is enough for winter storm criteria, however even with slightly
lower snowfall amounts in the 3 to 4 inches area immediately to
the west and south it, the combination of icing and snow would
justify a larger winter storm warning on an impact basis -
outside the current watch.
