   afternoon alongside the potential for high winds in our
   western zones late tonight through Thursday afternoon.

   Saturday, bringing strong winds and a chance for
   precipitation. Modest snow accumulations are possible in the
   mountains with light snowfall elsewhere.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Issued at 311 PM MDT Wed Mar 12 2025

Warm and dry weather continues today across the area, with mostly
sunny skies dominating. Some mixed layer cumulus is now developing
over the I-80 corridor as apparent on GOES satellite imagery, but
clear skies prevail to the north. The next big weather producer is
the powerful Pacific trough currently moving into the West Coast. As
we head into tomorrow, this trough will push inland, amplifying the
downstream ridge over our area. Southwest flow will increase late
this evening, boosting winds over Carbon county once again tonight
into tomorrow. LREF median 700-mb winds over Rawlins exceed 50 knots
early Thursday morning. The main uncertainty is whether these winds
will get to the surface during their fairly short window with modest
subsidence overnight. While these winds should have no trouble
getting down to the surface once the mixing kicks in, the flow aloft
may be on the downtrend by then. All together, there is enough
confidence for a few gusts of 50 knots or greater to upgrade
existing watches to a High Wind Warning, but this looks fairly
marginal with medium confidence. We will also need to watch Converse
county, where there is a good signal for subsidence, but winds aloft
appear more marginal. Did not have the confidence to include that
area in a warning right now, but will certainly need to watch in the
next forecast update. We will also need to keep an eye on near
critical fire weather conditions over the High Plains Thursday, but
the winds look lighter in the areas where humidity is critical, so
held off on any headlines with this update.

The progressive Pacific trough will push through the area quickly
Thursday night into Friday. Expect a quick surge of mountain
snowfall early Friday morning as moist southwest flow intersects
with the terrain. Snow showers will also extend into the lower
elevations of Carbon County, along a quick moving band of
frontogenesis. The most likely scenario is only about 1-3" in
Rawlins, but with the plentiful moisture and potential for heavier
rates, we will need to watch for higher totals. A lack of phasing
between the main upper level low swinging across central Colorado
and a secondary shortwave trough to the north looks to be the
primary inhibitor to a high impact storm for our area. Lee
cyclogenesis will be occurring over east central Colorado as early
as Thursday afternoon, but a secondary surface cyclone to the north
will not merge southward until Friday morning. By that time, the low
may be too far east to really deliver much precipitation to our High
Plains areas. The main uncertainty is in the Nebraska panhandle,
where some ensemble members still bring a rain snow mix Friday
afternoon. Other members keep the entire precipitation shield to the
east of our forecast area. The wet scenario is fairly low
probability (<30% at this time), but we should expect a fairly quick
changeover to wet snow if it plays out. The US-385 corridor could
see some snow/wind impacts in this case. The the percentile
snowfall was modified to reflect this scenario, but the most
likely scenario remains little if any snow accumulation. Lastly,
this system will also bring quite a bit of wind to the area.
However, the delayed arrival of the surface front means the
pressure gradient across the High Plains will not be that
significant until perhaps daybreak Friday. Winds should then
ramp up quickly, with good confidence is widespread gusts of 40
to 50 MPH over the plains through the day. The potential for 60+
MPH gusts is more uncertain at this time, but later shifts will
need to consider High Wind headlines for the I-80 corridor from
the summit to Sidney.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Upper-level troughing behind the departing system will slowly
transition towards northwesterly flow as an upper-level ridge moves
into the western CONUS during the day Saturday. Residual forcing in
the form of a 700mb shortwave will remain overhead, especially in
the western zones throughout Saturday. The passing shortwave will
allow for enough lift across the higher terrain to result in
continued snow showers Saturday, with snowfall tapering off by early
Sunday morning. Temperatures behind the departing system will be
fairly cool as 700mb temperatures remain in the -9 to -11C range.
Highs on Saturday will be in the mid-30s to mid-40s across the CWA.
In addition to continued snowfall chances for western zones, the
passing shortwave will strengthen 700mb height gradients, leading to
the potential for fairly gusty conditions on Saturday as a weak jet
develops aloft. Winds will remain well below high wind criteria, but
breezy conditions are expected.

The bigger wind threat for the long term forecast comes on Sunday
into Monday, as the upper-level ridge builds over the western CONUS
and northwesterly flow develops aloft by Sunday morning. As the ridge
continues to build and progress eastward, the CWA will see upper-
level winds shift from northwesterly to westerly as the apex of the
ridge is north of the region. As a result, westerly flow is expected
to develop throughout the atmosphere by Sunday evening into the
early morning hours on Monday. The region will be sandwiched between
a strengthening low off the west coast and a low over Canada leading
to increasing height gradients at 700mb. These strengthening
gradients are further supported by a weak ridge attempting to
develop across the Four Corners region. As a result a 65 to 70kt
700mb jet is progged to develop by Sunday evening across the Laramie
Range with the GFS suggesting surface winds between 35 and 40kts.
Corresponding Craig to Casper 850mb gradients increasing into the
low-60s with 700mb gradients not far behind in the mid-50s to low-
60s. Strong downward omega values are modeled by the GFS with
downward omegas maxed out along and just east of the Laramie Range.
This is a favorable placement of the maxed omegas for strong winds
in Cheyenne, so went ahead and increased the winds towards high wind
criteria for Sunday into Monday. With strong downsloping winds
expected temperatures will be nice east of the Laramie Range, if you
can get past the winds gusting around 60mph. High temperatures east
of the Laramie Range will be in the low-50s to low-60s in the
Panhandle. West of the Laramie Range will be cooler, but still
fairly warm for this time of year in the mid-40s.

Breezy conditions will continue into the day Monday as the upper-
level ridge slowly begins to propagate eastward as an upper-level
trough begins to push into the western CONUS. Synoptic forcing will
begin again across the western zones Monday afternoon into the
evening hours as 500mb cyclonic vorticity advection kicks up again
as the upper-level trough propagates eastward. 700mb height
gradients will remain strong during the day Monday as the region
remains sandwiched between the low over Canada and the weak ridge
over the southern CONUS. However, the 700mb jet will begin to weaken
as the trough pushes towards the region and pushes the other
features off to the east and gradients decrease. 700mb temperatures
remain warm, in the 0C to +3C, leading to another warm day across
the region. Adding to this 700mb warmth, the best downward omega
values will continue throughout the day, despite the weaker jet at
700mb and weaker Craig to Casper gradients. A surface low looks to
develop over southwest Montana into northern Wyoming. This is a
favorable placement for additional warm air advection into the CWA
and strong winds as the surface low strengthens. The low will
propagate eastward into western South Dakota, keeping the region in
that favorable location for strong winds. GFS currently suggests
surface winds between 25 to 30kts, by Monday afternoon. As a result
of strong winds, warm air advection, and downsloping flow Monday
will be the warmest day in the long term with highs east of the
Laramie range in the low-60s to low-70s and temperatures west in the
low- to mid-50s. Wind decrease by Monday night.

Right on the heels of the low leaving the region, long range models
continue to suggest a Colorado Low developing and bringing
significant precipitation to the CWA on Tuesday. The low is not
overly well stacked in the models at this time and the ECMWF is
several hours later with the low than the GFS. However, both long
range models suggest ample cold air being present within the system,
increasing the likelihood for widespread snowfall. The previous
Colorado Lows have all been fairly warm, but this one currently
boasts 700mb temperatures in the -10 to -12C range, which is colder
than previous systems. Uncertainty remains with this system, due to
long range models suggesting different impact times and a slightly
warmer solution in the ECMWF. This system will continue to be
monitored over the next few days as models come into better
agreement.

overnight. Expect light surface winds out of the west with
faster flow aloft present, resulting in wind shear at RWL, LAR
and possibly CDR. Expect strong westerly winds over 40 knots on
Thursday at both RWL and LAR. VFR conditions will dominate at
all terminals.

-  Elevated fire weather concerns from mild conditions possible
