The arctic airmass will remain over us tonight as
an upper level trough keeps us in northwesterly flow filtering in
cold dry air. While the upper level trough is over us, the 700mb
temperatures range from -25 to -20 during the overnight period. A
front will be moving through this evening to give the region some
chances for light snow showers. Hi-res guidance still remains to be
unimpressive with snowfall totals. This is mainly due to the warm
air advection associated with this front remaining weak. Total
accumulations still remain 1 to 3 inches for the mountains and an
inch or less for the mountain range adjacent counties. The
uncertainty here is whether or not the warm air advection will
remain strong enough to give the counties in the Nebraska panhandle
some measurable snowfall for this event. Behind this cold front
temperature will slowly drop into the negative temperatures through
the night. Temperatures will range from -10 to -20 across southeast
Wyoming and -10 to -5 in the panhandle. The upper level pattern
starts to shift Monday into Tuesday morning. Hi-res guidance depicts
a positively tilted ridge moving into the Rocky mountains. This
ridge increases the warm air advection aloft and switches our wind
direction back to a westerly flow. From 06z to 12z Tuesday, 700mb
temperatures rise to between -15 and -10 across the eastern Wyoming.
With the westerly wind direction being optimal for downsloping and
the warm air advection temperatures look to rise into the single
digits by Tuesday morning. The pressure gradient looks to tighten
from the incoming ridge and exiting trough. The Craig to Casper
height gradient ranges from 80 to 115 meters monday night through
Tuesday afternoon. Our in house machine learning algorithm also
maintains a 90 percent probability for the wind prones to reach high
wind criteria as well. Looking at omega fields there looks to be
sufficient subsident flow to bring those stronger winds to the
surface prompting another headline event. What remains uncertain
with this event is if the areas along and east of I-25 will also see
these stronger winds since the omega fields show weak rising and
sinking motion during this period.
Headlines are a little messy with this pattern shift and
high winds slightly overlapping each other. Starting at 11pm this
evening through 2pm Monday every zone will be in an extreme cold
warning with the exception of our mountain zones for wind chills
between -30 and -40F. The mountain zones have a higher threshold for
an extreme cold warning. With the warm air advection and downsloping
event Monday evening into Tuesday morning wind chills warm between -
10 to -20F for Platte, Goshen, Laramie County, and portions of the
southern Nebraska Panhandle. The warmer apparent temperatures puts
this area into the advisory instead of warning criteria. So, A cold
weather advisory was issued for this area instead of keeping them in
an extreme cold warning. With the gradient still progged as being
strong, the High Wind watch was also continued which runs from
Monday evening through Wednesday for the Sierra Madres, Snowy Range,
and the Southern Laramie range to include the foothills. The High
wind watch ends Tuesday night for the Central Laramie Range and the
Ferris/Seminoe/Shirley mountains.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...

The powerful upper trough responsible for the deep freeze this
weekend pushes to the east on Tuesday, but the pattern remains
fairly active through the rest of the week. The CWA lies on the
periphery of a building Western US ridge and a Northern Plains
closed low midweek, before another transitory ridge develops over
the Rockies to round out the workweek. Any relief from winter will
be brief as a new trough digs well into the Great Basin by next
weekend, transitioning Wyo/Neb over to southwest flow aloft.
Tuesday... The next high wind event is still on track for the usual
spots along the Sierra Madre, Snowy, and Laramie Ranges as a very
steep surface pressure gradient sets up. Another anomalous surface
high settles in from the Canadian Rockies and approaches 1050mb over
the WY/CO Rockies. Meanwhile, a surface low in the Prairie Provinces
extends a front along the High Plains, creating a nearly 25mb
gradient across Wyo. Additionally, a PV anomaly approaches from the
northwest as a mid-level shortwave rounds the ridge. Guidance is in
general agreement concerning 50+ kt flow at H5-7, which should
easily be translated to the low levels. In-house wind model guidance
suggests roughly 90% chance of high winds at Arlington and Bordeaux
with top speeds approaching 70 mph. Confidence is a little lower
toward Cheyenne, where it's 40% chance. Left the existing High Wind
Watches in place, but will need to monitor for potential expansion
into the central Laramie and eastern Platte zones. One side effect
of the strong west winds will be quick warming for areas near and
east of I-25. Strong warm air advection at H7 with temps pushing -3C
and downsloping west flow should push many areas above freezing
during the afternoon, the highest in several days. However, the
winds will also drive the apparent temps back into the teens. The
cold headlines should be ok to let expire around 18z.
Wednesday and Thursday... A progressive upper trough and its
attendant surface cool front swing across the northern High Plains.
Moisture is hard to come by with this system, but the forcing/lift
may be enough to squeeze out some snow showers over the mountains
and perhaps along the Pine Ridge. Max temps should reset into the
teens west of the divide and mid/upper 20s to the east. As for wind,
the threat of headlines over the mountains appears lower, but more
widespread breezy conditions are anticipated with 30+ kt gusts over
the plains. The surface pressure gradient will be more relaxed, but
an even stronger PV anomaly crosses the northern Rockies amidst a
130+ kt H3 jet streak.
Friday and beyond... Wyoming briefly becomes under the influence of
the West Coast upper ridge while a surface high provides westerly
downslope flow, promoting a warming spell. Official forecast max
temps for Friday range from mid 30s along the Hwy 20 corridor and
areas west of the divide to mid 40s east. The upper quartile of the
NBM envelope suggests upper 40s to lower 50s in the southern Neb
panhandle, which could occur if fair skies are realized. However,
this is questionable due to increasing moisture with the next big
wave. The axis of the upper trough bisects the forecast area late
Saturday or early Sunday. Along with a return to more seasonable
wintry temps, snow chances increase once again with the potential
for at least light accumulations.

Another surge of cold Arctic air will sweep southward across the
terminals tonight, producing a chance of snow tonight, with
clearing skies for late tonight and Martin Luther King Jr Day.
Wyoming TAFS...Ceilings will range from 4000 to 5000 feet until
13Z to 15Z, with occasional light snow until 10Z, reducing
visibilities to 1 1/2 to 3 miles and ceilings to 1800 to
2500 feet, then skies will become clear after 13Z to 15Z. Winds
will gust to 23 knots at Rawlins after 14Z, and gust to
25 knots at Laramie and Cheyenne from 13Z to 01Z.
