.SHORT TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...

High winds continue early this morning in the Arlington and South
Laramie Range wind prones. Although 60+ MPH gusts have been
occasional, the GFS suggests high winds will still be possible
through the morning hours Friday before the next upper-level
disturbance moves into the CWA. High Wind Warnings are still valid
and will likely be allowed to expire on time later this morning.
Besides wind, webcams show light snow along Interstate 80 between
Laramie and Rawlins and SNOTELs indicate accumulating snow in the
mountains. Webcams also show drifting snow over the roads due to the
strong winds. Between the falling snow and drifting snow, travel
conditions on Interstate 80 could become hazardous as the day
progresses.

Snow will continue in the mountains throughout the day as moist
upslope flow dominates. Snow will also be possible in areas adjacent
to the mountains. As previously mentioned, snow and strong winds in
the Arlington area will likely lead to hazardous travel conditions
on Interstate 80. Between now and Saturday evening, accumulating
snow is expected around Arlington. 4 to 8 inches of snow will be
possible. Coupled with multiple rounds of strong winds, falling and
blowing snow will lead to reduced visibility. As a result, went
ahead and issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Arlington to account
for blowing snow, accumulating snow, and hazardous travel
conditions. Other locations like central and southwest Carbon County
may also need to be watched in case winter headlines are needed.
Winter Storm Warnings still look on track for the mountains, as
models consistently show about 1 to 2 feet of snow falling over the
next few days as Pacific moisture is funneled into the CWA.

The break in winds will be brief as the next high wind event arrives
late Friday night. A stronger upper-level disturbance will move into
the CWA overnight. This will steepen both MSLP gradients as well as
700 mb height gradients. As a result, winds aloft will strengthen up
to 60 to 70 kts with strong subsidence in place to help bring these
winds down to the surface. A strong mountain wave signature is also
present which could also help get these winds down to the surface.
This wind event looks to be more widespread, with high winds likely
spreading out to areas outside of the wind prones. In-house guidance
shows high probabilities of high winds for the typical wind prones
or Arlington, Bordeaux and the South Laramie Range and foothills.
However, high winds will also be possible in East Platte County,
Laramie County, the Laramie and Saratoga Valleys, central Carbon
County and the Muddy Gap area. For now, held off on issuing any high
wind headlines for this event simply because high wind products are
already in effect. To prevent confusion, will allow the day shift to
issue headlines once the current ones expire. However, confidence is
high in high winds occurring outside of the usual wind prones. With
the next stronger disturbance moving in, snow showers will likely
spread into the high plains given the ample moisture and synoptic
lift. Hi-Res guidance does show some banded snow features, however,
snow accumulations in the plains will be minimal.

Snow showers and high winds will continue into the day Saturday.
Both will begin to taper off in the afternoon as the upper-level
disturbance moves out of the area. Northwest flow and some cloud
cover will keep temperatures seasonable for this time of year. By
Saturday night, snow and wind will have calmed down, although snow
will continue in the Snowy and Sierra Madre Ranges.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Synopsis...

Ensemble clusters continue to depict northwest flow across the
central and northern Rockies through next week with slight
variations in the zonal vs meridional component by early next week.
Overall, with ridging centered over or just offshore southern
California and dominant troughing from the Hudson Bay into the
Canadian Maritime, it does not look to be a particularly
amplified pattern the next several days with low amplitude
shortwaves keeping active precipitation chances in the mountains
which occasionally spill into the adjacent zones and high
plains through the period. Temperatures will gradually warm
through the end of the period with highs on the front range and
NE panhandle reaching into the 50s early next week. Most notably
through the extended will be periods of high to very high winds
especially early in the coming week.

- Snow Chances

As the lead shortwave mostly misses the area to the east on Friday a
second wave will more directly impact the area Saturday bringing
better moisture to the high elevations where snow will continue
through the day on Sunday. From Saturday morning through Sunday
things look to improve with regards to snow rate with only another
foot or so expected for areas above 8000ft and less than 3 inches
for areas below 8000ft across the Sierra Madre and Snowy ranges. The
next precipitation chances look to come in the later half of next
week as a cold front brings upslope flow to the northern Laramie
range and interior higher elevations. This event looks to have
significantly less moisture to work with than the weekend event and
thus only a few inches are expected for the higher elevations and a
dusting across the front range and high plains.

- Wind

Guidance is coming into better agreement on Saturday with a potent
140kt+ jet streak impinging upon southeast Wyoming by Saturday
morning with the GFS on the high end of guidance forecasting a 60kt
700mb jet streak while the NAM and ECMWF keep it closer to 50-55kts.
Regardless this should be enough to see a few gusts over 55mph in
the northern Laramie Valley near Arlington. This should be a short
event as the jet washes out through the day but High Wind Warning
looks fairly likely given the in house guidance amongst other
sources. Looking ahead to early next week there continues to be a
strong signal for high winds given an increasing pressure gradient
but the magnitude will depend on the track of a shortwave across the
northern plains. The GFS and ECMWF still show differences in track
that are drastic enough to make or break this forecast but overall
the potential exists for a stronger than typical wind event that
would extend beyond just the traditional wind prone areas.
