A short break from the wind and snow today and Thursday. Looking at
Mid-level water vapor the ridge can be seen slowly pushing into the
Rocky mountain region. I increased our Max temperatures up a couple
degrees as we got a little bit warmer than expected. The surface
high remains over northwest Colorado but the pressure gradient looks
to relax a little past sunset (03z) keeping our winds in our wind
prones slightly elevated this afternoon. Thursday will be the
warmest day of the period as the strength of the ridge peaks aloft.
NAEFS climatological percentile continues to paint southeast Wyoming
and the Nebraska Panhandle int the 98th percentile to put
temperatures east of the Laramie Range in the upper 40's to low
50's. However, these appreciated warm temps will be short lived as
an upper level trough sags south from Canada to really flatten our
ridging pattern. During this time our pressure gradient will start
to increase and thus strengthen our winds at the surface.
The Craig to Casper 850mb values steadily increase from 66 meters to
85 meters from Thursday morning to 06z Friday or Thursday night
before gradually dropping back down to 54 meters by 15z Friday or
Friday morning. In-house machine learning algorithm also
supports these elevated winds by progging a 80 percent chance of
reaching high wind criteria for Arlington and Bordeaux for the
same time period. I also expanded the High wind watch as the GFS
Omega field showed stronger subsident flow for zones 103 and
114 as the small 700m 45-50kt jetstreak passes over those
areas.

Our warm spell will unfortunately be quite brief, as a strong arctic
cold front will plow through the area Friday morning, and cold
frigid air in place through at least Tuesday morning, and possibly
longer. While surface pressure will reach a minimum very early
Friday morning, the cold air will lag behind somewhat. Expect
pressure to start increasing quickly after daybreak, but cold air
advection may be fairly slow for an arctic cold front. Still, expect
Friday's highs to be reached in the morning (or even pre-dawn for
some areas), with temperatures dropping through the afternoon.
Dropping temperatures with marginal moisture behind the front will
lead to quick saturation of the atmosphere Friday and snowfall
returning to the area. The lifting profile is fairly muddled though
at this time. Frontogenesis breezes through the High Plains very
quickly and isentropic flow is either neutral or weak descent,
leaving just the weak low-level upslope flow after the early evening
hours, especially along and north of the North Platte River Valley.
However, model guidance shows more substantial frontogenesis along
the I-80 corridor from Cheyenne westward along with a neutral flow
along an isentropic surface. This should help keep light to moderate
snow Friday afternoon and evening, with light snow continuing after
midnight. Additionally, we may need to watch for snow squalls along
the front end of this system. Thermodynamic profiles are marginal
for snow squalls, but the dynamics look better with 3-6mb 3-hour
MSLP increases collocated with good boundary layer RH and the
potential for the mid-level frontogenesis to stall along I-80.
Models show marginal snow squall parameter values between 1 and 3
mainly between 2PM and 8PM Friday, indicating the threat is present,
but not a sure bet at this time. Overall, snow amounts changed
little with this update, with fairly good agreement on a widespread
1 to 4" event for SE Wyoming (plus higher amounts in the higher
elevations as usual), and perhaps a dusting to 2" in the Nebraska
panhandle.
Attention then shifts to the cold temperatures behind the Friday
afternoon and evening snowfall. While light snow may linger into
Saturday, rates after midnight should be very light. 700-mb
temperatures bottom out around -20 to -24C across the area Saturday,
supporting highs in the single digits to teens. Some areas may be
borderline for a Cold Weather Advisory Saturday, but the current
forecast keeps wind chill values just above criteria for most of the
area. We will need to watch Saturday night, as some models show a
brief but important area of dry air moving in aloft. If clouds break
over fresh snow cover, Sunday morning's lows may have a pretty low
floor. The main uncertainty remaining in the forecast is the second
reinforcing shot of cold air. Cluster analysis indicates that about
70% show this occurring, while the remaining 30% expand the ridge
eastward rapidly enough to keep this front mostly to our east. The
current forecast leans towards the scenario in which the front does
come through, since that is supported by a clear majority of the
ensembles at this time. In this case, the very cold atmosphere
saturates again Sunday afternoon with light snow returning to the
area. While models actually show a little better lifting profile
with this wave than the first, the extremely cold temperatures will
make it difficult to extract much moisture. In fact, forecast
soundings show the entire atmosphere colder than the dendritic
growth zone, so snow to liquid ratios could be actually a little
lower. Regardless of the snow outcome though, if this reinforcing
front materializes, Cold Weather Advisories and even Extreme Cold
Warnings will be in the discussion. These clusters of ensemble
members show 700-mb temperatures dropping as low as -26 to -30C,
which near climatological minimums. Even the ensemble mean (which
includes the 30% of warmer members) is below the 0.5 percentile of
climatology over much of the High Plains. The colder scenarios would
probably lead to highs near or below 0F on Monday.
After this, models are in pretty good agreement on a warming trend
through Wednesday. We will again have to watch lows for Tuesday
morning though, as a dry atmosphere and clearing skies look like a
good bet, which will again put a very low floor on Tuesday morning's
lows. The limiting factor this time around will be winds also
increasing as ridging moves in aloft, but a sharp surface inversion
may keep the winds to the higher elevations, and allow for the
valleys to plummet.
