Latest webcams were showing blowing and drifting snow continuing
to affect areas especially along I-80. The models are showing
strong subsidence 800-700mb subsidence taking place along the
I-80 corridor through much of the day. This combined with the
strong low level north winds around 40 to 45kts in this layer
(800-700mb) will create areas of blowing/drifting snow through
the remainder of the morning into the afternoon. The greatest
impacts from the blowing and drifting snow will be along west-
east facing roadways such as I-80. Therefore, we went ahead and
issued a Winter Weather Advisory for blowing and drifting snow
for much of the southern Nebraska panhandle.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...

It's an active morning across the area today as the axis of another
split trough traverses overhead. Over the last few hours, the front
edge of a strong cold front riding along the upper level trough axis
has pushed through the High Plains, with a mechanically forced snow
squall on its leading edge. While thermodynamic profiles are not
favorable for snow squalls today, rapid surface pressure rises
behind the front has forced a narrow band of heavier snow to clear
though. Behind this, snowfall rates should be reduced to the light
to moderate category, but with strong NNW winds continuing through
the morning. This flow regime favors the Pine Ridge, Cheyenne Ridge,
and the northern slopes of southern Wyoming mountain ranges. In
addition, northwest flow in the Laramie Valley is a good wind
direction for the city of Laramie and I-80 summit to get
accumulating snow. The combination of continued light to moderate
snow showers producing up to another inch or two of snow in the
valleys (and higher amounts above 7500 ft) with the strong winds
leading to continuing blowing snow prompted the expansion and
extension of the Winter Weather Advisory through noon today and
north/eastward into Laramie and Platte counties. Elsewhere over the
High Plains, widespread winds gusting up to 40 to 50 MPH will
produce blowing snow in areas with a snowpack. A Special Weather
Statement is in effect until noon. Falling snow should come to an
end around mid to late morning, possibly lingering in the higher
terrain into the afternoon. Winds should start to gradually ease
after noon, but overall it will be a fairly nasty winter day with
cold temperatures stuck mostly below freezing and gusty winds
keeping apparent temperatures even lower.
The back edge of 500-mb vorticity associated with today's shortwave
trough should clear out to the southeast tonight, allowing for
another transient ridge to take over as we head into Friday. A
pressure gradient remaining in place over the High Plains tonight
will keep a modest breeze going, and probably prevent temperatures
from getting quite as low as Wednesday morning, but localized areas
that decouple will still probably plummet. For now, nudged
temperatures down slightly but not too significantly. Friday looks
to start off sunny and chilly, but should warm up to within about 5F
of seasonal averages thanks to warm air advection aloft through the
day. As the active northwest flow pattern aloft continues, the break
will again be short-lived with the next trough already pushing
across the northern Rockies Friday. The upper level shortwave will
support a surface low over just east of the Rockies which will
gradually translate southeastward, leading to falling pressures over
our High Plains. With the strong surface high still entrenched over
the inter-mountain west, expect cross-barrier MSLP gradients to
creep up again beginning Friday morning. Height gradients at 700-mb
will increase also, but about 12-hours after surface gradients first
start to creep up. As a result, we'll be looking at high winds
beginning in the typical surface-driven gap areas such as Arlington
and Bordeaux during the day Friday, then expanding to the I-80
summit and adjacent areas Friday night as the synoptic forcing
strengthens. For now, started off with a High Wind Watch for the
wind prone areas with a staggered start and end time. This may need
to be expanded into the I-25 corridor and other valleys of southeast
Wyoming though. Grand ensemble median 700-mb winds over KCYS at 12z
Saturday reach 57 knots, suggesting good support for a more
widespread strong wind event Friday night into Saturday morning. The
main uncertainties at this time relate to how close to the barrier
the surface trough will be positioned Friday night, and thus how far
east the descending motion will reach. As a result, did not have the
confidence to include the wind-prone adjacent population centers
such as Cheyenne, Laramie, and Wheatland in the High Wind Watch with
this update. Snow showers will also return to the forecast Friday
night as moisture increases with the next upper level shortwave
trough. More details on this can be found in the long term section
below.

Saturday...The next shortwave trough aloft moves across Wyoming, and
with adequate low and mid level moisture, we expect to see scattered
to numerous snow showers, most numerous west of I-25, and over the
northern Laramie, Snowy and Sierra Madre Ranges. Strengthening low
and mid level gradients suggest windy conditions in the afternoon.
Sunday...In the wake of the shortwave trough aloft passage, brisk
northwest flow aloft will continue with enough low and mid level
moisture for orographic snow showers over the Snowy, Sierra Madre
and northern Laramie Ranges, and plenty of cloud cover elsewhere.
700 mb temperatures near -14 Celsius will yield maximum temperatures
in the 20s to lower 30s.
Monday...Continued cold with broad troughiness aloft over Wyoming
and northwest flow aloft, along with 700 mb temperatures near -14
Celsius. Drier with limited low and mid level moisture.
Tuesday...As the main trough aloft moves to our south, northerly
flow aloft continues overhead, limiting the warming trend, though it
will be slightly warmer as 700 mb temperatures rise to near -7
Celsius, yielding maximum temperatures from the 20s to mid 30s.
Wednesday...A warming trend develops as cloud cover lessens, and a
ridge aloft develops overhead, and with 700 mb temperatures near -1
