With the front continuing to move across the CWA from the north,
winds have started to trend downward. Most of the High Wind
Warnings were able to expire on time, however the front has yet
to move into the Arlington area, the Laramie Valley, and the
South Laramie Range and foothills. Because of this, winds in
these areas continue to gust over 60 MPH. As a result, the High
Wind Warnings for these zones were extended until midnight. By
then, the front should be through the area and winds will ease
behind it.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Issued at 250 PM MDT Sat Mar 22 2025

High wind event is ongoing across the region this afternoon,
with speeds ranging between 60-65 mph having been reported as of
this writing. We should be entering the peak strongest and most
widespread winds, continuing through the early evening before
winds should begin weakening into the early nighttime hours.
Fire Weather concerns are also still possible as our RH values
have dropped into the 17-20% range across portions of the
Nebraska Panhandle and eastern Wyoming, keeping it just outside
of Critical Fire Weather conditions. Nonetheless, the strong
winds will continue to pose an enhanced risk and if any fires do
crop up, they should be able to spread quickly. Meanwhile,
popcorn convection has begun to initiate across portions of our
northern CWA and moves across the region. Further into
northwestern Wyoming, convection has been associated with some
lightning, and with areas of favorable instability and lapse
rates breaching into the 9-10 C/km range, there will be
favorable environment to support some of this activity becoming
stronger and possibly producing a quick burst of winds as they
move across, reaching near-severe levels at the strongest.
Finally, plentiful snowfall has been seen for our mountains of
the Sierra-Madres and lighter accumulations in the Snowy Range.
Light to moderate snow should continue across this
orographically enhanced area through the evening before waning
later tonight.

The front shifts across this evening and we should see
precipitation and winds all begin to exit the region into
tomorrow. Behind this feature as the ridge starts to move in to
take control of the area for next week, the 700mb jet will
strengthen once again, and with another round of favorable
downward omega values, expect another chance at high winds
Sunday into Monday, though this will be more confined to our
usual wind prones. But with gusty winds across the region and RH
values expected to reach the low 20's to very upper teens, we
should see another risk of enhanced Fire Weather concerns, but
once again stopping just below critical conditions needing a Red
Flag Warning. By Monday afternoon, this will begin to clear as
the ridge continues shifting to center over us, with clearing
and warming then likely through the long term. Temperatures will
be cool on Sunday, with highs in the 40's to 50's, with a jump
into the 60's by Monday, a sign of the Spring warmth to come.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...

The long term forecast (mid to late week) is highlighted by a warm
weather regime. An anomalous upper ridge builds over the
Intermountain West, bringing a string of very mild and generally
days for eastern Wyo and western Neb. Surprisingly, there also
appears to be a lack of a signal of strong wind during this stretch.
The springlike stretch will likely be capped by a developing lee
side storm system.

Tuesday... The upper ridge amplifies over the Great Basin with the
eastern periphery cutting across the northern High Plains. A weak
surface front drapes across the forecast area, resulting in a slight
temp drop compared to Monday. Nonetheless, max temps should still
reach the upper 50s to 60s for a good chunk of the CWA. Wind speeds
drop off from Monday's likely high wind event as the upper jet
pushes east of the area, mid-level height gradient relaxes, and low
level flow transitions from westerly/downslope to northwest/north.

Wednesday and Thursday... The core of the springtime weather takes
hold with the ridge axis along the spine of the Rockies. NAEFS
ensembles suggest the ridge strength/height contours to line up near
the 99%ile of climo, while the ECM shows a near certain signal (EFI
0.8-0.9/1) of warmer than normal temps. The signal also exists for
highly anomalous or potentially record breaking temps with the SoT
>0. H7 temps reach 6-8C in eastern Wyo and H85 temps approach 20C in
Neb panhandle each day. Given decent mixing, these values should
correlate to highs in the 70s east of I-25 on Wed and even lower 80s
in Neb panhandle on Thu. Of note, the official forecast highs
generally line up with ECX/MEX guidance, but fall around or below
the 25%ile of the NBM envelope. In short, some solutions are much
more aggressive with the warmth, and the forecast may be adjusted
upward in the coming days. Along with the warm temps, humidity
values drop to around critical fire criteria. At this time, winds
appear light enough to preclude any imminent red flag threat.

Friday and beyond... The ridge breaks down over the Western US and
is replaced by a progressive trough. Discrepancies remain among the
long range guidance in terms of amplitude and timing of the trough,
in addition to the surface component of a lee side low. As of now,
the greater signal for precip appears to occur Friday into Saturday,
and thermal profiles should be warm enough for widespread rain with
mountain snow. A brief uptick in winds is possible Friday with the
developing low and passing cold front. Internal wind guidance caps
the potential for high winds at 20% for the prones, and the CAG-CPR
H85 height diff reaches 60m for a very short window.
