.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...

Transient ridging is moving over the area this morning with mostly
clear skies allowing for a chilly morning in a few locations where
the winds have decoupled. However, the next shortwave is now moving
in from the west, and will support increasing cloud cover this
morning. Warm air advection and downslope winds today should support
highs climbing back to near average for this time of year. We also
have southwest flow increasing aloft today, along with an increasing
cross-barrier pressure gradient as a surface cyclone develops in the
lee of the Canadian Rockies well to our north. Parameters remain
marginal but sufficient for high winds near Arlington and Bordeaux
through the day today. We will also need to watch portions of I-25
between Wheatland and Casper for winds to spill out of the northern
Laramie Range. However, the flow aloft looks a little unimpressive
to get these stronger winds to reach the highway.

Late this afternoon into the evening, the surface pressure trough
will slide across the area as the shortwave ejects into the plains.
This should shift winds from southwest to west or northwest,
bringing an end to the high wind concern for Converse and Platte
counties. The potential will remain for the Arlington area, and
increase for the I-80 summit area. In addition to the wind
shift, modest and brief frontogenesis combined with orographic
lift in place of a slight upward nudge in moisture should return
snow showers to the mountains this afternoon and evening. The
window for snow will be quite brief, but the mountains may
receive 1 to 4" of snow with this passing shortwave. Strong
northwest flow aloft remains over the area tonight and through
the day Friday. Additional windows for light mountain snow
showers will open Friday midday (less than 1" expected) and
again early Saturday morning.

Rather than issue another watch which would need to start
nearly immediately after the pre- existing warning for the
Arlington/Elk Mountain area ends, opted to just extend the
warning another 24 hours through sunset Friday. However, the
wind threat will probably shift more to the eastern side of the
zone with winds slightly more parallel to I-80 once the front
passes through this evening. Once the flow turns northwest, the
I-80 summit will also see the potential for strong winds
increase. It looks like there will be two windows, first
immediately behind the front late this evening, and then again
with mixing Friday morning. Therefore, added a High Wind Watch
for this zone through Friday. Elsewhere, expect a cooler day
Friday behind the departing trough with gusty northwest winds
persisting over the High Plains.

We also will have some marginal fire weather concerns to be wary of
today and tomorrow. West to southwest winds with mild temperatures
and low humidity will produce widespread elevated to locally
critical fire weather conditions. The Nebraska panhandle will be
closest to critical, but there is not confidence in the conditions
being widespread or long duration to issue a warning, since the
lowest humidities are not in the same location as the strongest
winds. Additionally, some lingering drifted snow cover may be
present across the southern panhandle, where conditions will be
closest to critical. Friday will bring more elevated fire weather,
with widespread gusty northwest winds, but RH should remain above
critical.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Fairly quiet, dry, and windy weather returns for the weekend into
the work week as upper-level, dry, northwesterly flow develops
across the western CONUS. On Saturday an upper-level shortwave will
slowly push across the northern CONUS, north of the CWA leading to
increased cyclonic vorticity advection at 500mb. An associated 700mb
low will follow a similar path, trekking across northern Montana and
North Dakota. 700mb height gradients will strengthen across the CWA
at the 700mb low deepens. A westerly, 700mb jet around 55 to 60kts
will develop across the CWA, leading to favorable conditions for
high winds at the surface. With the surface low rapidly deepening
through Saturday afternoon into the evening hours, surface pressure
gradients across the CWA will increase as well until a strong cold
front moves through. Craig to Casper height gradients are not overly
impressive for Saturday, maxing out around 60m, so this primarily
looks to be a surface gradient driven high wind potential, with some
assistance from the strong 700mb jet. Downward omegas will max out
across the Laramie Range, leading to very gusty conditions at the I-
80 Summit and downwind into the South Laramie Range Foothills.
Strong winds may spread further east into central Laramie County and
other adjacent zones. Bordeaux looks to do fairly well with this
event, given the strong downward omegas, strong cross-barrier
pressure gradients, and a strong westerly 700mb jet. Winds will
likely not decrease until well after the stout cold front pushes
through the region, keeping winds elevated. Winds should decrease by
early Sunday morning. The cold front will bring much colder 700mb
temperatures back into the region, between -10 and -13C. With this
surface low moving through Saturday, there will be a good chance for
mountain snow, with the possibility of snow showers expanding into
the lower elevations. The cold front passage will be fairly dry,
with only minimal precipitation chances for the lower elevations.

Sunday will be the coldest day in the long term forecast due to the
cold FROPA on Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Daytime
highs will struggle to climb into the 40s west of the Laramie Range
with highs in the mid-40s to low-50s east of the Laramie Range.
Residual 500mb cyclonic vorticity advection will assist in snow
showers lingering in the mountains on Sunday morning before snow
comes to an end by the afternoon hours. Dry, northwesterly, upper-
level flow will move overhead Sunday onward, due to an upper-level
ridge strengthen over the western CONUS. As the ridge slowly moves
eastward Monday, surface temperatures will increase nicely into the
mid-50s to mid-60s east of the Laramie Range and 50s west. However,
with northwesterly flow, the door will be open to multiple
disturbances passing through the flow. The primary impact of these
disturbances will be elevated to near-high winds most days during
the week. However, these winds will primarily be downsloping winds,
leading to additional warming across the region. The warming trend
continues throughout the week, with Thursday being the warmest day
with highs in the low- to mid-70s east of the Laramie Range and mid-
60s west! It will surely feel like spring this week!
