Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service State College PA Issued by National Weather Service Binghamton NY 822 PM EDT Tue May 13 2025 .SYNOPSIS... * An extended period of wet weather is expected, with at least some rainfall anticipated on a daily basis, right into the weekend * Temperatures will average near to somewhat above seasonal normals for mid-May && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/... 815 pm update... We continue to monitor upstream rain band development closely from south-central PA southward through central VA. Recent CAM and WoFS model trends bring a heavy south-north band into Bedford/Fulton with time this evening, which prompted the issuance of another areal Flood Warning in this area. There is still some significant upper diffluence this evening across PA, in advance of the short-wave pinwheeling around the OH Valley cutoff low. Later tonight, once the short- wave lifts farther north, we may see a downward rainfall trend, as large-scale forced ascent starts to wane. In the meantime, though, heavy rain trends will be closely interrogated through at least midnight to 2 am. 4 pm update... An ongoing and locally significant flood threat is ongoing for parts of Somerset and Bedford counties and where most of this discussion will be focused. Unfortunately, as the cutoff low slowly wobbles north into the OH Valley, a well formed low-level jet will direct copious moisture into the ridges of the southern Alleghenies into early evening. Near-term model projections begin to lift this jet north of the area of concern between 8 and 11 pm. At that point, some reduction in rainfall can be anticipated. So far, true convective elements have stayed from the Blue Ridge in WV/western VA on south and west. At this point, overcast, rainy conditions have continued to result in minimal CAPE over the Laurels. Hopefully, this continues, but with the significant and deep moisture train and strong upglide into the terrain, we'll keep a close eye on this situation. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY/... 410 pm update... By Wednesday, remnant mid-level energy from the opening up closed low will be over the Commonwealth and will likely result in diurnally favored showers/isolated thunder. Hydrologically sensitive areas from Tuesday rainfall will need some closer scrutiny with respect to any Flood Watches. Those small-scale details probably won't be resolved until sometime on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday, the aforementioned trough will weaken and lift northeast. However, an upstream trough in the northern stream will be approaching from the Great Lakes region. This energy, plus a warm frontal approach Thursday, then a cold frontal one Friday, will bring more diurnally favored showers and storms. Afternoon highs each of these days will be warmer than recent (70s-lower 80s), given the anticipation of breaks of sunshine. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... 1045 am update... On the large-scale, with the slow moving cutoff low having already opened up and lifted north of the Commonwealth by Friday, the next system to watch will be an incoming short-wave in the northern stream tracking from the Upper Midwest across the Northeastern CONUS this weekend. The combination of that short-wave and a surface frontal complex will bring diurnally favored showers and thunderstorms Friday, then some lingering convection on Saturday. Sunday still looks a little questionable, with a cyclonic flow aloft and the passage of a secondary surface cool front. Thus, there remains enough uncertainty to justify the mention of at least scattered showers for the second part of the weekend. Early next week, model trends favor at least a brief period of drier conditions, with short-wave ridging aloft and a surface anticyclone building down from south-central Canada. && .AVIATION /00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... 00Z TAFS sent. Band of showers heading northward toward south central PA. Another cluster of showers between that band and MDT. Echo tops borderline for thunder. Highest tops mainly south of PA. Further north, not as much rain. Either way expect a wide range of conditions overnight into Wednesday morning. CIGS will be on the low side for much of the time. For Wednesday, the steady showers should taper from the south to the northeast, with conditions coming up. Persistent southeast winds could occasionally gust 20 to 25kts overnight. Outlook... Thu...Early restrictions in lower clouds, fog, and showers are possible. Some improvement is possible by afternoon prior to additional showers and storms developing in the afternoon.
