Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston SC 1218 PM EST Mon Mar 3 2025 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will prevail through Tuesday. A strong cold front will impact the region on Wednesday, followed by more high pressure late week. Another cold front could approach the area next weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Early this afternoon: No change to the forecast. Previous discussion continues below. Late this morning: Dry high pressure will prevail across the region today, leaving us with quiet weather. Satellite imagery shows a well defined southern stream shortwave moving eastward out of the lower Mississippi Valley which is driving a smattering of high clouds that are most concentrated across southeast GA. This cloud cover still appears to be thin enough so as to not impact insolation significantly and cool temperatures. Low-level thickness off the 12z KCHS RAOB support highs in the low 60s today and that looks to be on track. Afternoon dewpoints and resulting relative humidity values will have quite the significant gradient with inland areas dipping into the mid teens for relative humidity, ranging to the 40 percent or higher range along the immediate coast. Tonight: Upper level ridging builds across the southeast region in earnest while surface high pressure continues moving away from the Atlantic coast. Low level southeasterly flow and some semblance of an inverted surface trough along the coast becomes established and likely to draw Atlantic moisture/cloud cover into the coast through the overnight hours. Some spotty precip off the Atlantic is not out of the question, although any Atlantic shower activity is looking to hold off until Tuesday. Much warmer temperatures tonight into Tuesday morning with lows spanning the 40s. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... The surface high pressure will continue to move into the Atlantic off the North Carolina coast, advecting warmer temperatures off the water and onto the coast. The resulting inverted trough/coastal trough in combination with weak isentropic flow is expected to result in showers moving ashore and inland throughout the morning hours, with the latest high- resolution models indicating the showery activity could continue into the late afternoon hours. NBM probabilities are near zero for a quarter inch of rain throughout the 24 hour period, with probabilities for a tenth of an inch rising into the teens...which won't help the current drought conditions much. Despite the mostly cloudy skies and chances for light rain, afternoon temperatures are expected to peak in the mid/upper 60s along the coast, and in the upper 60s to mid 70s inland, with warmest temperatures in central Georgia. Ensemble situational awareness tables (ESATs) show that temperatures overnight into Wednesday begin to climb into the 90th percentile of climatology, resulting in overnight lows only dropping into the upper 50s to lower 60s. The most active weather will be occurring on Wednesday as a cold front approaches and moves through the region. A combination of geopotential height falls and warm-air advection out ahead of the cold front is expected to result in weak scattered showers by the early morning hours, with the main band of showers and scattered thunderstorms along and behind the cold front moving through during the morning and early afternoon hours. Potential for strong to severe thunderstorms continues, largely due to the strong wind fields which these showers/thunderstorms will be able to mix down to the surface. Ensembles are in good agreement showing strong 850mb winds near 50 knots, so gusts of 45 to 50 mph can be expected with room for stronger gusts with the stronger storms. Majority of model guidance is showing less than 500 J/kg of CAPE available, while shear on the other hand is high in the 60-80 knot range, again indicating wind being the biggest threat. SPC maintains/converted the outlook into a slight risk (level 2 out of 5) for majority of the area, while the southern tip of McIntosh is in a marginal risk (level 1 out of 5) for severe weather. Both the Cooperative Institute for Precipitation Systems (CIPS) analogues and the Colorado State University- Machine Learning Page (CSU-MLP) using the GEFS ensembles shows the highest severe weather risks splitting the area to our north and south. The Euro Extreme Forecast Index (EFI) also shows climatologically strong winds are expected, with the shift-of- tails (SOTs) starting to populate above 0 (indicating that at least 10% of the ensemble members are forecasting wind values above model climate for this time of the year). All of this to say, be prepared for strong to possibly severe (58mph+) winds to move through on Wednesday as the front pushes through. Abnormally warm temperatures will keep our afternoon high temperatures in the lower to upper 70s for most area, with the main push of cold air moving into the area throughout the evening hours. Given the timing of the cold air, it currently looks like all climate sites will remain below record high minimums as the cold air rushes in prior to midnight. As cold air advection continues into Thursday, morning temperatures will feel vastly cooler in the lower to mid 40s, though afternoon temperatures are expected to climb back up into the 60s given clear skies and weakening cold air advection. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/... A surface high pressure is expected to move through from the west overnight into Friday, bringing another round of cooler temperatures along with it. Overnight/early morning temperatures in the mid 30s inland may result in another round of front for our inland areas, with coastal areas remaining in the upper 30s to lower 40s. Warmer temperatures are brought back into the region on the backside of the exiting high pressure, though another cold front and/or Gulf Low is expected to result in another round of rain late Saturday into Sunday. && .AVIATION /17Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... VFR conditions are expected to prevail at KCHS, KJZI, and KSAV through 18z Tuesday. Beginning late tonight, stratocumulus from the adjacent coastal waters is expected to begin spreading onshore. We could see VFR ceilings develop at the terminals, especially in the 12-18z time period Tuesday. Also, there are some indications that isolated showers will attempt to push onshore was well, potentially passing close to the terminals. For now, we have left the mention of showers out of the TAF's given the overall low probability. Extended Aviation Outlook: Flight restrictions are possible in showers/thunderstorms on Wednesday. Gusty conditions are possible both Wednesday and Thursday. && .MARINE... Northeasterly flow will remain dominant across the coastal waters through today before veering easterly-southeasterly tonight. Wind speeds and seas will remain below marine headline thresholds. Tuesday through Saturday: Winds Tuesday will continue to veer into the morning hours before settling to be out of the southeast, with wind speeds slowly increasing throughout the rest of the daytime hours into the 14-17 knot range. Overnight into Wednesday, winds strengthen as they veer to become out of the south ahead of an approaching cold front, with at least small craft advisories will be needed for all waters. Potential for gale level winds can't quite be ruled out throughout the day, with waves in our offshore waters beginning to approach 10 feet. After the front passes through during the afternoon hours, winds shift to become out of the west-northwest by Thursday morning, which will likely continue at least a small craft advisory. Winds and seas relax overnight into Friday as a surface high pressure moves overhead, with winds becoming out of the southwest on Saturday. && .FIRE WEATHER... This afternoon, inland dewpoints will mix out and lower substantially which will yield relative humidity values in the mid to upper teens. These values will be mainly west of the I-95 corridor. Along the coast, a much different story with relative humidity values of 40 percent or higher. The good news is that winds will 10 mph or less, especially where the lowest relative humidity values reside.
