Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Charleston SC
508 AM EDT Mon Mar 10 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will approach the area from the Florida Panhandle
early this morning, before it moves into the nearby Atlantic
today. The low will then strengthen as it pulls away tonight,
with high pressure to then prevail through much of the rest of
the week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Today: Aloft, a vigorous southern stream low will track east across
the Deep South this morning, then eventually across the local area
this afternoon, producing deep layer forcing while an h25 jet max
axis is placed across Florida. At the sfc, low pressure will track
across northern Florida and Southeast Georgia, eventually shifting
offshore by late morning/early afternoon, then continuing to the
east-northeast late day and overnight. As this low progresses east,
deep moisture and elevated instability north of a warm front will
help produce rounds of showers and a few thunderstorms, with the
bulk of activity occurring across Southeast Georgia. Given about
1000 J/kg of MUCAPE and a pocket of mid-lvl dry air pressing into
western most zones ahead of the mid-upper low, a few thunderstorms
could become strong, producing wind gusts that necessitate a
Special Weather Statement. However, convection is likely to remain
sub-severe. Once shower/thunderstorm activity shifts offshore,
there could be a brief lull in overall activity, at least coverage
wise along coastal areas.
Another round of showers and thunderstorms should then enter western
zones this afternoon as the mid-upper low advances east across the
area. Sfc instability remains weak throughout the day with cooler
sfc high pressure across most areas north of the passing sfc low.
However, elevated instability should once again support numerous to
widespread showers along with a few thunderstorms into early evening
hours. Total rainfall amounts for the day should range between 0.75
to 1.50 inches, highest depending on whether a location experiences
a thunderstorm.
Tonight: The mid-upper low will quickly advance offshore, with sfc
low pressure shifting north-northeast and away from the local area
through the night. Precip potential will be decreasing with time,
with the bulk of moderate showers and few thunderstorms shifting
offshore and/or north of the area a few hours after sunset. Some
wrap-around moisture could very well support light rains through
midnight, especially across Southeast South Carolina, but will
become noticeably less during the second half of the night. Given an
enhanced pressure gradient across the area, conditions could remain
somewhat breezy near the coast for much of the night. Low temps
should dip into the upper 30s/lower 40s inland to mid-upper 40s
closer to the coast.
Lake Wind: Cold air advection helping tap into 40-50 kt geostrophic
winds at the 1000 mb behind a passing low could lead to gusty winds
around 25 kt across Lake Moultrie tonight. A Lake Wind Advisory
should eventually be needed.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Tuesday will begin with high pressure building into the region from
the west while zonal flow develops aloft. This pattern will persist
into Wednesday. Both Tuesday and Wednesday will feature plentiful
sunshine and quiet weather. With the building high pressure
temperatures will warm a few degrees each day, with highs on Tuesday
in the low 70s and Wednesday in the upper 70s. A sea breeze will be
present each day, keeping temperatures along the beaches cooler than
inland locations, generally in the upper 60s to around 70.
A mid-level shortwave trough will swing through the southeastern
states on Thursday while a weak cold front pushes through the local
forecast area. With minimal moisture (PWATs <1") a dry forecast has
been maintained. Temperatures on Thursday will again reach into the
70s, despite cloud cover ahead of the approaching cold front.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Ridging aloft and high pressure at the surface will dominate the
synoptic pattern Friday and Saturday. Quiet weather is expected both
days, with highs continuing the warming trend into the low 80s
inland by Saturday. The forecast turns more active Saturday night
into Sunday as a mid level trough digs across the central CONUS with
an associated cold front at the surface. Scattered to numerous
showers will be possible on Sunday, thunderstorms will also be
possible on Sunday afternoon. There is still much uncertainty in the
timing of showers and possible thunderstorms, but as of this
juncture the severe risk is non-zero, given the potential for
sufficient instability and shear values. Temperatures will moderate
to near normal values post-FROPA on Monday.
&&
.AVIATION /08Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
CHS/JZI: Conditions should start out VFR with light rain/showers for
a few hours, but expect conditions to become MVFR/IFR by around 07Z,
the low-end IFR by around 09Z as low pressure passes nearby with
periods of moderate rains. IFR cigs will then persist through 06Z
Tuesday with light/moderate showers at times. Northeast winds should
also turn northerly during the afternoon, gusting between 15-20 kt
at times, before becoming more northwesterly by around 02Z Tuesday.
SAV: Periods of MVFR/IFR are expected with light/moderate rain or
showers during the night. VCTS can not be ruled out as well during
the next few hours, but most thunderstorm activity should be limited
south and southeast of the terminal for the bulk of the night. IFR
conditions will likely persist for much of the day and into evening
hours, although some improvement becomes possible as low pressure
pulls farther away from the coast late in the TAF period. Northeasterly
winds should become more north this afternoon, then northwest during
the night, gusting up to 15-20 kt at times.
Extended Aviation Outlook: Prevailing VFR through the week.
&&
.MARINE...
Today and Tonight: Low pressure will shift across coastal waters
this morning, then continue to the east-northeast through the night.
Latest radar trends suggest a cluster of heavy showers and isolated
thunderstorms shifting across southern waters early morning,
producing gusty winds and perhaps requiring Marine Weather
Statements.
Once thunderstorm activity passes this morning, there appears to be
some modest improvement initially, perhaps continuing into mid
afternoon hours, but the bulk of guidance suggests an enhanced
pressure gradient developing as the low passes nearby with large
pressure rises and cold air advection helping tap into 40-50 kt
geostrophic winds at the 1000 mb level during the night. While most
waters will likely remain below Small Craft Advisory levels for a
period of time late morning into the afternoon, conditions
deteriorate rapidly by the evening, thus Small Craft Advisories will
remain across outer Georgia waters and nearshore SC waters off the
Charleston County Coast, before transitioning into a Gale Watch over
night. Gale Watches will likely need to be upgraded to Gale Warnings
later this morning. Remaining coastal waters should experience a
lull long enough mid morning and afternoon to allow Small Craft
Advisories to end early morning, but then will need to be
reissued for the night. The Charleston Harbor will also be under
a Small Craft Advisory overnight as well.
Tuesday through Saturday: Winds and seas will be elevated to start
Tuesday as low pressure continues to pull away from the local marine
waters. Small Craft Advisories will likely be ongoing across the
Charleston nearshore and 20 to 60 nm offshore GA waters until around
noontime. Thereafter high pressure will build into the region into
Wednesday. A weak cold front will approach the waters on Thursday,
however no surge in winds or seas are forecast. The forecast
features generally S winds around 10 knots and seas averaging 2 to 3
ft into the weekend.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Although the forecast does not call tides reaching 7.0 feet MLLW
with the early morning high tide in downtown Charleston (~6 AM),
minor flooding issues remain possible due to ongoing moderate rains.
Additional rains will occur again with the evening high tide (~6:30
PM) but tide levels will be lower. Still, there is some concern that
minor flooding could again occur.
