.SYNOPSIS...
A winter storm will impact our area this afternoon through
Wednesday morning. Another weak storm system could clip the
coast on Thursday. High pressure will prevail for the end of
the week and into next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 5 PM this afternoon to Noon
on Wednesday. No major changes were made with the early
afternoon update.

Today: Aloft, a large scale trough will encompass much of the East
CONUS while a strong h25 jet is located to the northeast with a
favorable right entrance quadrant placed across the region. At the
sfc, high pressure will build from the west, ushering in chilly air
to the Southeast United States while low pressure gradually develops
along a boundary offshore under favorable divergence associated with
the strong jet aloft. This will remain the primary setup for the day
and into the night, with arctic high pressure nudging into the area
from the west with cold air and increasing moisture/precip activity
arriving as low pressure lingers offshore leading to a winter
weather event across Southeast South Carolina and Southeast Georgia.

HiRes guidance, various model soundings and critical thickness
layers indicate that a mixture of precip types will likely occur
across the region, with precip activity initially starting as sleet
mid to late afternoon and possibly freezing rain near the Altamaha
River closer to the Georgia Coast prior to sunset. Expect the precip
mode to primarily switch over to snow for locations well inland by
late day, with the bulk of accumulations for all precip types
starting by early evening.

Tonight: Heading into evening hours, most guidance suggests all
precip turning over to snow for all areas away from the coast as
indicated by sounding profiles with a deep layer of sub-freezing
temps through the low-lvls, ample moisture in the dendritic growth
zone and sfc wet bulb temps below 32 degrees through the night.
Closer to the coast, the primary precip mode remains more
complex/complicated, as lingering coastal troughing suggests some
form of marine layer influence nudging a warm nose onshore around
the 850mb lvl. Should this feature become realized, sufficient
melting is possible above the sfc to lead to an additional sleet
and/or freezing rain situation, particularly across coastal Georgia.
However, latest guidance supports sfc winds remaining from the north-
northwest for much of the overnight period, suggesting any freezing
rain potential shifting over to sleet and/or snow shortly after
midnight. Sleet and/or freezing rain will play a factor in total
snowfall accumulations closer to the coast (especially south), but
impacts will still remain high and supportive of a Winter Storm
Warning for all areas through the night.

At this time, it is believed that total snow accumulations of 1.5 to
2.5 inches are possible, with areas from Reidsville and Statesboro,
GA to Summerville and Jamestown, SC being placed in the most
favorable zone of snowfall potential for a longer period of time.
Further south, freezing rain with ice accumulations around 0.25
inches are possible along the Georgia coast. However, there is
greater uncertainty in freezing rain accumulations, including the
potential for slightly higher amounts along I-95 south of Chatham
County, GA. Should colder temps arrive across this area earlier,
snowfall amounts could approach the 1.5 to 2 inch range here as
well, with some latest model guidance suggesting this possibility.

Temps will be chilly overnight, dipping into the low-mid 20s away
from the immediate beaches. The combination of these temps along
with northerly winds will support wind chill temps in the 10-15
degree range tonight. A Cold Weather Advisory continues for all
areas through the night.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Wednesday: The mid-levels will consist of a shortwave over the
Southeast U.S. early in the morning. It'll quickly shift offshore
into the afternoon. Meanwhile, longwave troughing will prevail over
most of the CONUS. At the surface, the winter storm will be shifting
offshore early in the morning. Though, troughing will develop
offshore during the afternoon and prevail into the overnight.
Meanwhile, High pressure will prevail to our north and further
inland. Any remaining winter precipitation should be along the
immediate coast early in the morning and quickly shifting offshore.
The High will then bring dry conditions over land areas for the rest
of the morning, into the afternoon, and the overnight hours. Showers
over the coastal waters late at night will approach the coast.
Though, they're not expected to reach the coast. The combination of
the arctic air mass and the new snow/ice cover will keep
temperatures well below normal. Highs should be limited to the 30s.
Though, some places may not rise above freezing during the day. At
night, temperatures will quickly plummet into the teens due to
mainly clear skies, light to calm winds, and the remnant snow/ice.
However, cloud cover will quickly increase overnight, with it
becoming mostly cloudy late at night. This will keep temperatures
from falling as much as they could. In fact, we'll probably hit the
lows in the late evening and then have temperatures remain nearly
constant or perhaps warming slightly overnight. A Cold Weather
Advisory is in effect for our entire area.

Thursday: A longwave trough will remain over the eastern half of the
U.S. A surface trough will be along the Southeast Coast during the
day. It'll shift offshore during the evening and overnight as High
pressure builds in from the west. Models continue to have rain
showers over our coastal waters during the morning and afternoon.
Some of these rain showers could make it to our coastal counties,
especially in the morning. If so, temperatures will be rising from
below freezing to above freezing. If there are any showers towards
daybreak, then it would be freezing rain. Later in the morning would
be all rain. Though, we must stress that POPs are only a slight
chance. But this is something to be aware of. Otherwise, inland
areas will remain dry. Daytime temperatures will remain well below
normal, ranging from the upper 30s to lower 40s. The same can be
said with nighttime temperatures. They'll mostly be in the lower to
middle 20s, except just below freezing at the beaches. But with very
light to calm winds, wind chills should stay above the 20 degree
mark. If so, we wouldn't need a Cold Weather Advisory.

Friday: The mid-level trough axis will shift from the MS Valley in
the morning to the East Coast in the afternoon. Surface High
pressure over the Southern Plains in the morning will shift towards
the Southeast late in the day. The High will bring our area dry
conditions with partly to mostly sunny skies. West winds should also
help temperature moderate. Though, they'll remain well below normal.
Highs will generally peak in the mid to upper 40s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pressure will prevail across the Southeast Friday night into
Saturday. It'll shift offshore late Sunday. Dry conditions are
expected. High temperatures will moderate, but remain well below
normal on Saturday. Though, they should only be a few degrees below
normal on Sunday. A storm system may bring rain to our region on
Monday. It may also bring us near normal high temperatures.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
KCHS/KJZI will initialize at 18Z with VFR conditions and KSAV
will initialize with MVFR cigs. Low cigs will move into SC
through the afternoon, with MVFR conditions prevailing as of
22Z. Conditions will quickly deteriorate into the evening as a
winter storm impacts all three terminals. IFR conditions will
prevail through the overnight period with a combination of
wintery precipitation, low cigs, and reduced visibilities. As
daybreak Wednesday approaches conditions will begin to improve,
with VFR expected by mid-morning Wednesday.

Extended Aviation Outlook: There are low probabilities of flight
restrictions along the immediate coast Thursday morning due to rain
or freezing rain.

.MARINE...
Today and Tonight: A coastal trough/low will take shape off the
Southeast Coast this morning, attempting to nudge north/northeast
during the day as high pressure builds across the region from the
west. An enhanced pressure gradient will occur between these two
features, supporting northerly winds between 20-25 kt with gusts to
around 30 kt across coastal waters. The Charleston Harbor should
experience slightly weaker winds, generally between 15-20 kt. Seas
will also build during the afternoon and overnight period, generally
to 4-6 ft across nearshore waters and 6-9 ft across outer Georgia
waters. For this reason, Small Craft Advisories are now in effect
across northern SC waters and outer GA waters and will start up by
late morning for remaining nearshore waters (outside the Charleston
Harbor). There is a low-end chance of a few gale force wind gusts
across outer GA waters this evening, but the duration and coverage
appears short-lived, so opted not to go for a Gale Warning.

Wednesday: The winter storm will be shifting offshore early in the
morning. Though, troughing will develop offshore during the
afternoon and prevail into the overnight. Meanwhile, High pressure
will prevail to our north and further inland. Strong and gusty NE
winds in the morning will gradually subside into the afternoon, but
remain elevated during the evening and overnight hours. Seas will
follow this trend as well. Small Craft Advisories will be in effect
for all of the Atlantic waters.

Thursday: A surface trough will be along the Southeast Coast during
the day. It'll shift offshore during the evening and overnight as
High pressure builds in from the west. Elevated N to NW winds will
prevail. Seas should remain high enough for the GA waters beyond 20
nm to keep a Small Craft Advisory in effect.

Friday into the weekend: Surface High pressure over the Southern
Plains Friday morning will shift towards the Southeast by late
Friday, then prevail into the weekend.
