.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will prevail today. A cold front will quickly
move through Monday, followed by cold high pressure into late
week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
This afternoon: No significant updates were done to the previous
forecast. Still expect the surface ridge to continuing moving offshore
into the Atlantic as flat mid and upper level ridge briefly
builds over the area in response to an upper trough and
associated surface low developing upstream over the southern MS
River Valley. Most surface obs still showing light/variable
winds, but expect them to become more south-southeast in the
afternoon as the ridge slides farther east. Satellite loop
continues to show that mid level clouds will increase from west
to east through the afternoon. High temperature forecast looks
on track, with highs still expected to be in the mid to upper
50s, possibly hitting 60s over the southern GA zones.
Tonight: The closed low aloft will slowly move across Missouri
and into southern Illinois late, causing small height falls to
occur locally, as the flow aloft backs to the southwest. At the
surface, low pressure passes through the Tennessee Valley, as
the Atlantic high pulls further offshore. Given a notable
increase in moisture within the 850 to 650 mb layer, and also
isentropic ascent strengthening, there are indications of some
showers perhaps moving into our northern and western counties.
But since condensation pressure deficits are forecast at 50 to
100 mb, we felt better holding off on any rains. Intensifying
warm advection will allow for a considerably warmer night, with
lows to occur early on. With as much as a 3-4C rise in 850 mb
temperatures between 00Z and 12Z, temperatures will climb into
the 50s in many areas overnight. Due to a 45-55 kt low level
jet that moves in late, and the pressure gradient tightens as
the upstream low and frontal system draws closer, south and
southwest winds will increase. Even with stable conditions,
expect 10-20 mph winds inland, and 15-25 mph and gusty near the
coast by 6 AM. These winds are also enough to prompt the
issuance of a Lake Wind Advisory on Lake Moultrie starting at 4
AM Monday.
&&
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Monday: A low pressure system will push across the northern
Tennessee Valley and then shift off the NC/VA coast as its southward
extending cold front races across the local area in the afternoon.
Although shortwave energy aloft will be weakening as it moves
through, sufficient moisture and forcing will produce scattered to
numerous showers ahead of and along the FROPA. Guidance suggest
scant amounts of instability to work with, keeping thunderstorms and
deep convection limited. A strong LLJ and 0-3 km bulk shear values
in excess of 50 kt suggest low-topped showers will race across the
area, entering our western counties by morning and perhaps clearing
the coast by late afternoon. Although the typical severe factors
will remain limited, strong to possibly damaging wind gusts could
occur within showers. Rainfall amounts should remain light with the
progressive nature of the front, around one-quarter of an inch or
less. Outside of convection, southwesterly winds will be gusty
through the evening. Gusts are forecast around 25-30 mph for most
places with the exception of Charleston and Beaufort Counties, which
could see gusts up to 35 mph. Guidance hints toward the possibility
for some stronger gusts around 40-45 mph especially along coastal
southeast South Carolina, which could warrant a Wind Advisory for
some of the coastal zones. Gusts over Lake Moultrie are expected to
peak around 35 kt, and a Lake Wind Advisory has been issued through
Monday night. Temperatures will be tricky, with rapid
warming/cooling occurring ahead of/behind the front. However, strong
warm air advection in the first half of the day will support the
warmest day of the week with highs reaching the low to mid 60s. With
the front well offshore by Monday evening and cold high pressure
rapidly building in its wake, CAA will be well underway by
nightfall. In addition, clear skies will cause temperatures to
plummet with lows bottoming into the mid/upper 20s inland and
low/mid 30s along the coast.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Dry, surface high pressure will continue to
build Tuesday bringing considerably colder temperatures through
Wednesday. Even under full insolation Tuesday, highs will only reach
the mid to upper 40s across southeast South Carolina and upper 40s
to near 50 degrees across southeast Georgia. Lows will plummet into
the low to mid 20s inland and closer to 30 degrees along the coast.
With the exception of the beaches, most places will reach below
freezing Tuesday night. Wednesday's forecast reflects highs only a
couple of degrees warmer than Tuesday due to slight air mass
modification.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure will remain in place through the end of the week.
Temperatures will struggle to warm into the 50s with highs ranging
from the low to upper 40s each day next week, although some spots
across Southeast Georgia could sneak into the lower 50s. Thursday
looks to be the coldest day of the week as a reinforcing cold front
pushes through, with highs in the low to mid 40s across southeast
South Carolina and mid/upper 40s in southeast Georgia. Each night we
expect min temperatures to dip into the 20s inland and low 30s along
the coast. Wind chill temperatures in the upper teens across the
interior counties Wednesday night into Thursday morning could lead
to possible Cold Weather Advisories.
Heading toward the end of the week and into the weekend, strong
short-wave energy will dive down into the southwest U.S./northern
Mexico region and become briefly cutoff before ejecting eastward
through the southern states/northern Gulf region. Longer term
guidance solutions continue to spin up low pressure in the northern
Gulf in response, tracking a storm system somewhere through the
southeast region late Friday into Saturday. With ample cold air
nearby, this has winter precip type implications for the southeast
region. Guidance continues to trend warmer, resulting in a chilly
rain for the local area. However, we will need to keep an eye on
this system as we go through the week in case trends turn colder.
&&
.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
VFR conditions still expected to prevail at KCHS/KJZI/KSAV
through 12Z Monday. A strong low level jet will cross the area
late tonight, leading to the risk for non-convective LLWS. Have
introduced LLWS for KCHS and KJZI toward sunrise Monday, but
could come in even earlier. Also showing Prob30 for showers at
all sites by after sunrise or so. Still think threat for thunder
is low given lack of CAPE.
Extended Aviation Outlook: Flight restrictions possible at
KCHS/KJZI/KSAV Monday within showers occurring with a passing cold
front. In addition, wind gusts around 25-30 kt are possible through
Monday evening. Gusts could be stronger within showers.
&&
.MARINE...
This afternoon: No significant changes were made to the previous
forecast. Surface high pressure will continue to move offshore,
allowing winds to veer to more of a southerly direction,
generally 5 to 15 knots. Given the relatively light winds,
expect seas of 1-3 feet.
Tonight: The high pulls further out to sea, between Bermuda and
the Bahamas, as deep low pressure and its associated frontal
system moves through the Deep South and into the Southeast.
Relatively benign wind and sea conditions early on, but a
drastic change to much worse conditions will take place
overnight. The pressure gradient tightens between the frontal
system and the Atlantic high, and there is about a 4-8 mb drop
in pressures in this 12 hour period. Combined with a 45-55 kt
low level jet passing not far inland late, winds across the
coastal waters will rise considerably. To avoid a small 2-3 hour
window of Small Craft Advisory conditions and a double
headline, we started the Gale Watch a little early, at 4 AM for
all waters. The Watch will likely be upgraded to a Gale Warning
for most, if not all waters in later shifts, with some chance
for even Storm conditions on the Charleston County Atlantic
waters Monday.
Monday: A quick moving cold front will push across the local waters
Monday. Gale Watches continue for all marine zones, including the
Charleston Harbor, due to frequent SSW gusts around 35-40 kt. The
strongest gusts will target the Charleston County nearshore waters
where gusts could peak around 45 kt, which lends to a low-end chance
for storm-force conditions. Numerous showers are expected with the
frontal passage, perhaps containing a few thunderstorms in waters
closest to the Gulf Stream. Within pockets of deeper convection,
strong wind gusts of 55 kt or greater are possible. Seas will
rapidly build, peaking around 6-11 ft late Monday afternoon. As the
front pushes into the Atlantic Monday night and strong high pressure
builds in its wake, conditions will be slow to improve, but
eventually dropping below advisory thresholds by Tuesday afternoon.
Tuesday through Friday: West-northwest winds will prevail through
the period with inland high pressure in place. A slight surge in
winds is possible Wednesday night into Thursday as a reinforcing
cold front pushes through the area. Per the latest forecast,
conditions looks to remain below Small Craft Advisory criteria.
