What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this river flood warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Columbia, SC wrote its last area forecast discussion before this river flood warning went out at Feb 14, 6:54 PM EST, 6 hours 21 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 14, 6:54 PM EST, 6 hours 21 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Columbia SC
654 PM EST Fri Feb 14 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Our next storm system approaches the area tonight, continuing
into this weekend with increasing rain chances and gusty winds.
Cool and dry weather returns early next week, with more
unsettled weather toward the middle of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...
Key Message(s):

- Increasing clouds and rain chances tonight.

Satellite imagery is showing some scattered cloud cover is
beginning to develop across the region. Radar is also showing
some returns moving into the CSRA; however, I suspect it is just
mid level clouds as there is still a 20+ degree dew point
depression across the region.

Forecast remains generally on track from earlier today as a
surface high pressure over the Northeast slides to the east.
Meanwhile, flow aloft shifts to the southwest, allowing for
moisture and cloud cover to increase overnight. PWATs are
expected to increase to around an inch or so by daybreak. These
factors should allow for some showers to develop late tonight
into the early morning hours. The latest hi-res guidance has
been showing a little later start to the shower activity, which
seems reasonable given how dry it is at the surface currently. A
low-level jet and expected cloud cover will likely limit the
cooling tonight, with lows only dropping into the mid 30s north
to lower 40s south.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Key message(s):

- In-situ wedging makes for a dreary Saturday

- Strong cold front approaches early Sunday, bringing moderate
to heavy rainfall and embedded thunderstorms

- Windy conditions expected ahead of and behind the front, with
frequent gusts of 35-45 mph likely

Active weather expected to continue on both Saturday and Sunday as a
large, intense synoptic scale system propagates eastward
through the eastern CONUS. An intense, 99th percentile high
pressure is currently centered over southern Ohio and shifting
eastward. By tomorrow morning, this is forecast to have shifted
off the coast of southern New England with a surface ridge axis
extending southwestward along the spine of the Appalachians.
This sets us up for another day of in-situ wedge conditions on
Saturday. Strong isentropic lift will also aid in maintaining
this surface wedging through the day, with showers likely across
the central and northern forecast area throughout the day.
Temperatures are, as always, quite tricky with this setup. While
the surface wedging looks to hold throughout the day, the
surface high that is forcing it is expected to quickly exit
eastward well into the Atlantic through the day. So we're
playing a bit of a timing game with the approaching low pressure
and associated mid/upper level forcing. This will gradually aid
in lifting the surface warm/wedge front northward, but the
timing is definitely in question across the central FA along the
I- 20 corridor. North and south of this area, the forecast is
relatively high confidence. We'll likely stay in the 40s in our
northern most counties (think Lincoln, GA to Lancaster, SC) and
get into the 60s in our southern most counties (Burke, GA to
Clarendon, SC). In between, its really dependent on the
coverage of rainfall and how fast that boundary shifts
northward.

Regardless, it does look like another dreary and cool day for the
majority of the forecast area. The temperature curve will be unusual
for most of us, as highs for the 24h day on Saturday are expected to
occur well after sunset. Temperatures are expected to be in the
upper 50s or low 60s for the majority of the night as the cold front
pushes towards the forecast area from the west. There are a few
questions that we need to answer as this approaches, primarily owing
to how much low-level stability we can attain as the front and
attendant line of convection approach and eventually move
through. Wind fields look really impressive, with a 70-80 knot
850 hPa jet developing and pushing through on Sunday morning.
Hodographs are long and curved, with tons of low-level SRH
overspreading the area. So the line will have plenty of wind
shear to work with. However, it still seems fairly unlikely
we'll have enough instability to really see much of anything.
SPC has us in a Marginal Risk for severe weather associated with
this, and that feels completely appropriate given the robust
wind fields and weak instability. It is definitely plausible
that the line of convection & cold front could be strong enough
to mix some of that wind energy down but instability looks too
limited to expect anything more than isolated in nature. This
line of convection is expected to bring anywhere from 0.5"-1.0"
of rainfall as PWs and moisture transport will be quite high in
association with it, making the rainfall efficient. Expect this
to push in and through the area between 09z and 15z on Sunday,
with some showers lingering as late as 18z on Sunday.

The other issue that we need to be aware of on Sunday is the
potential for intense wind gusts ahead of and behind the front.
Despite there being limited low-level instability, guidance is
beginning to show some neutral stability developing ahead of the
front as dewpoints rise into the upper 50s and low 60s across the
area. With wind fields extremely impressive, this seems sufficient
to mix down non-convective wind gusts that could approach or exceed
45- 50 mph ahead or or just behind the front. Guidance has really
pushed towards this over the last few runs of models, and a full
blown Wind Advisory may be necessary in response to this. Think that
there is a better chance for 35-45 mph wind gusts behind the front
on Sunday afternoon. Strong cold advection regimes tend to lead to
us mixing a bit more than forecast, and a secondary low-level wind
maxima looks to overspread the area after noon on Sunday. The non-
convective winds look to be our biggest threat on Sunday, so stay
tuned the forecast as isolated power outages may become a problem if
this kind of wind materializes. High Sunday afternoon should end up
in the mid to upper 60s, with lows falling into the mid 30s across
the region.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Key Message(s):

- Cold, dry airmass pushes in on Monday & Tuesday

- Active pattern continues, with a chance for wintry weather
along the NC/SC border by Wednesday/Thursday. Uncertainty
  abounds regarding this, though.
- Very cold air pushes in by the end of the week. Highs & lows
potentially 20F or more below normal.

Another active week of weather is expected, featuring unseasonably
cold weather and the potential for mixed precipitation along the
NC/SC border by midweek. Behind Sunday's cold front, an anomalously
intense surface high pressure is forecast to push into the northern
Plains and southern Canada, extending south and eastward across the
eastern 2/3rds of the CONUS. This surface high is really impressive,
with all pieces of operational models forecasting this to get to a
peak intensity of 1054-1058 hPa on Tuesday afternoon, with surface
ridge axes sprawling across the Plains, Ohio Valley, and Mid-
Atlantic in response to this. For context, a surface high this
intense is a solid 3-4 standard deviations above normal and is one
of the strongest on record for this time of year compared to NAEFS
1979-2009 climatology. As a result, temps on Monday and Tuesday look
quite cold compared to normal as this airmass pushes in and
overspreads the southeastern US. Have opted towards the colder side
of guidance given how anomalously cold this airmass looks & that the
NBM tends to struggle with events this far outside of climatology.

We get into the complex portion of this forecast as we get into
Wednesday and Thursday. A rather robust system is forecast to
develop and traverse the deep south and southeastern US on Wednesday
and Thursday. The same upper-level low responsible & associated with
this airmass is forecast to begin reamplifying across the central
plains as two jet streaks phase over the Rockies and amplify
everything downstream. This should result in an already intense
(~90th percentile) zonal jet streak across the eastern CONUS taking
on an anti-cyclonic curvature & intensifying towards the 97th-99th
percentile in strength by Wednesday (per NAEFS). The result of this
should be widespread, broad, strong warm advection and
isentropically forecast precipitation developing across the
southern and southeastern US. As the trough axis and associated
vorticity max continue to dig into the southern US, a strong
coastal low is forecast develop in the northern Gulf and
propagate along the Atlantic coastline and towards New England
by Thursday night. This is a great setup for longer duration
precipitation across the forecast area, and should result in
more beneficial rainfall. However, the concern is that guidance
is showing what is pretty much a classic pattern for potential
freezing rain, especially for our counties near the NC/SC
border. Guidance came in slightly more north with the surface
low and a bit warmer than the runs were 24 hours ago. However,
given the complexity of this pattern & how far outside of
climatology this airmass looks, confidence is quite low on what
our eventual weather impacts will be. It would not surprise me
for guidance to go either way with this, but my sense is that
the models are underestimating the strength of the surface
ridging that will be in place across our area and the impacts
that should have on eventual precipitation type. But as always,
this is mostly speculation this far out, especially with
something that looks like a mostly freezing rain there. Stay
tuned to the forecast over the coming days as we'll (probably)
get a better grip on this thing over the weekend. Beyond that,
the weather looks quite cold Thursday night through Friday night
of next week. The surface high should push directly into the
eastern CONUS, making temps in the low 20s very possible in the
wake of our mid-week system.

&&

.AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Conditions deteriorate on Saturday with rain and IFR/LIFR CIGS

Low and mid level moisture will spread into the Southeast
tonight leading to MVFR ceilings across the region by 12Z
Saturday. A 35 to 45 kt LLJ will aid in moisture transport over
a cold near-surface layer where winds will be light and out of
the E. This will promote scattered showers through much of the
day helping to further lower ceilings and cause periodic
reductions in visibility. LLWS criteria may also be met after
12Z Saturday at all TAF sites given the jet that develops over
the area. Expect ceilings to continue to lower through the day
with IFR or LIFR likely by 00Z Sunday.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...Restrictions will continue into the
weekend and portions of early next week as multiple fronts and
rainfall move through the region.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
Recent rainfall totals in the headwaters of the area rivers in
the Upstate of SC and western NC indicate that 3 to 5 inches
fell with amounts from one half inch eastern Midlands to 2
inches across the Piedmont. This has produced rises on the area
rivers and streams that will continue into the weekend. Expect
some minor to moderate river flooding along the Congaree River
below Columbia along with minor river flooding along the Pee Dee
River near Cheraw and Enoree River near Whitmire. River levels
will gradually diminish over the weekend into early next week.
However, additional systems are expected to bring more rainfall
to the region through the period.
