Winter Weather Advisories for the Beartooth/Red Lodge foothills
and the foothills around the Big Horns region were allowed to
expire at midnight as precipitation has shifted south overnight.
We have also cancelled the Winter Storm Warning for the Beartooth
Mtns as accumulating snowfall has ended there as well. Current
satellite and analysis indicated a fast W/NW flow over the region.
Look for 500mb heights to slowly build across the region today
into Sunday. Pressure gradients across the Paradise
Valley/foothills is currently at 3 mb, but is expected to
increase a bit today with some gusts to 25-35 mph range in the gap
locations (Livingston, Nye). A low amplitude ridge axis will
slide to the high plains with backing flow in our west bringing
significant deep Pacific moisture back into our mountains on
Sunday. This push of moisture and strong W/SW flow may produce
considerable orographic snowfall on south and west facing slopes
in the Beartooths again. Probability of over a foot of snow Sunday
through Monday is upwards of 80%, with progs currently showing
12-24 inch totals. We have issued a Winter Storm Watch Sunday
through Monday for the Beartooths. A few rain/snow showers may
spread east on to the nearby foothills and plains, but present
little if any notable impacts. Highs are expected to be a little
over seasonal averages for the weekend with readings in the upper
30s to lower 40s, then mid 40s common over the lower elevations
Monday.
Tuesday through Wednesday looks relatively quiet with above normal
temps and perhaps another period of mountain snow and occasional
periods of wind in the foothills. The warmest day of the week is
likely to be Wednesday with highs possibly in the upper 40s and
50s. Ensembles generally indicate above normal heights, and thus
seasonally mild and breezy weather, may persist through the last
half of the week, including Thursday (Christmas). However, there
is uncertainty regarding this as some ensembles members show a
wave moving across Canada and pulling down a cold front across the
high plains of eastern Montana on Christmas Day. We will be
monitoring ensemble trends with regard to this, so any holiday
travelers should keep track of the forecasts. BT
