.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure centered across New England and eastern Canada will
continue to slide east tonight, making way for complex storm system
over the Central Plains, supporting the notably milder weather
through the start of the weekend. The dry weather will persist
through tonight before conditions deteriorate over the weekend, with
an increasing potential for showers. This will include a slight
chance for a few rumbles of thunder Saturday, and a soaking rain
Sunday, especially for areas east of the Genesee Valley (supporting
a risk for flooding across the Eastern Lake Ontario Region). Cool
and drier weather will then return for the start of the new work
week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As the ridge of high pressure continues to slide east tonight, a
potent area of low pressure centered over the Central Plains this
evening will track northeast into the upper Midwest, as such its
associated mid level shortwave and prefrontal trough will slide
across WNY late Saturday morning/early Saturday afternoon ahead of
the longwave trough and cold frontal passage Saturday night.

With the pattern outlined above, expect mainly dry weather to
continue tonight, however conditions will become breezy due to an
increasing pressure gradient. Wind gusts off of the Chautauqua Ridge
will gust between 30-35 mph.

Saturday, subsidence and dry air associated with the exiting surface
ridge will support a decrease in rain chances and rainfall amounts
for the eastern half of the forecast area. The best chances for
measurable rain will be across WNY from late Saturday morning
through mid Saturday afternoon. There may be just enough instability
to support an isolated thunderstorm. Outside of the rain chances,
expect increasing cloud cover from west to east Saturday. Despite
the cloud cover, strong warm advection and southerly downslope flow
will support temperatures to soar well into the 60s across much of
the area, with low 70s possible across the lake plains of WNY.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A warm, southerly flow will be across the forecast area Saturday
night. A long wave trough will be just to our west with a strong
cold front moving across the Central Great Lakes into the Ohio
Valley. A plume of anomalously high PWATS will be just to the west.
A 50-60kt low level jet and subtle ripples in the southerly flow may
produce a few showers across the region, however most of the evening
will be relatively dry, but warm. Strong deep layer ascent and
moisture will increase ahead of a passing surface wave and cold
front late Saturday night and Sunday. A slug of moisture with mean
PWATS between 1-1.25 inches combined with strong, southerly moisture
transport will begin to bring more numerous showers into western NY
by Sunday morning. As the front and trough move east, strong forcing
and a northerly storm motion will bring widespread moderate showers
to most of the forecast area Sunday. Downsloping will keep amounts
less across the Finger Lakes region, however all locations should
get measurable precipitation. High shear and low CAPE will provide a
low chance for thunderstorms embedded in the rain Sunday. The
northerly storm motion and time of day may result in the Tug Hill
region experience multiple rounds of moderate rainfall. Forecast
rain amounts range from 0.50-0.75 inches across the western Southern
Tier, while 0.25-0.50 inches across the Niagara Frontier, Finger
Lakes and Lower Genesee Valley. Amounts of 0.75-1.25 inches are
still likely east of Lake Ontario. The higher amounts pose a risk of
flooding when combined with snow melt. Please see the Hydrology
section. The strong southerly flow across the region will keep
temperatures elevated Saturday night with lows in the upper 50s to
low 60s, possibly reaching record minimums. Since the cold front
will be mainly west of the forecast area by mid-day Sunday, highs
will reach the 60s to low 70s.

The cold front will enter western NY Sunday afternoon and move east
of north-central NY Sunday evening. Temperatures will fall and west-
southwest winds will increase behind the front. While the strongest
low level winds will be ahead of the front Sunday, if the low level
jet lags, there could be 40 mph+ with the cold front. There is low
confidence at this time. Moisture quickly diminishes from west to
east Sunday night but upslope flow will keep lingering showers
across the higher terrain. A few rain showers may switch to snow
showers before ending. No accumulation is expected. Low temperatures
will reach the low to mid 30s.

Post-frontal conditions will continue Monday into Monday night. A
dry airmass will wipe out overcast skies and precipitation. Cooler
Monday with highs in the low to mid 40s, with lows in the low to mid
30s across western NY, upper 20s across north-central NY.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Well above normal temperatures will be the main theme ahead of a
deepening trough cutting across Utah-Colorado Tuesday, and then into
the nations midsection on Wednesday. Temperatures will climb into
the 50s and 60s Tuesday, and then peak on Wednesday with highs well
in the 60s to low/mid 70s across the Genesee Valley. A strong sfc
low with the approaching trough will be in the process of passing to
our west Wednesday evening across central Michigan. Warm and breezy
conditions will 'likely' engulf much of the Lower Lakes ahead of the
sfc low and cold front. As we head into Wednesday night and
Thursday, chances for showers will increase just ahead of this cold
front. As the cold front enters the Lower Lakes and then crosses the
area Thursday, colder air will quickly filter in from west to east.
Showers will briefly taper off behind the cold front as a dry slot
works through the Lower lakes Thursday. After that...a cold W-WNW
Cyclonic flow and moisture wrapping back in may induce some measure
of a lake response off Lake Ontario by Thursday evening as H850 T's
fall to -9C to -12C. Chilly and breezy conditions expected Friday,
with scattered to numerous snow showers. We could even see some
accumulating lake effect snows east and southeast of Lake Ontario.

.AVIATION /05Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Strong low pressure will move across the Upper Midwest states today,
with a weakening pre-frontal trough advancing out ahead of the
system and into the eastern Great Lakes this afternoon. This
weakening trough may produce a few light showers for a few hours
this afternoon across Western NY, but CIGS/VSBY will remain VFR.

Another strong surface low will move into the Ohio Valley later
tonight. Expect mainly dry conditions and VFR through the first half
of the night, then increasing chances of rain and lowering CIGS
across Western NY late tonight as the next strong surface low
approaches.

A strong low level jet will remain in place today, and strengthen
further tonight. This low level jet will produce an extended period
of low level wind shear through tonight. Surface winds will
occasionally become gusty from the south as some of the stronger
winds from aloft mix down to the surface. Gusts of 20-30 knots will
be common areawide, and 30-40+ knots locally in downslope areas and
across some hilltops.

Outlook...

Sunday...VFR/MVFR lower elevations, MVFR/IFR higher terrain with
rain showers. A few isolated thunderstorms possible. Windy.

Sunday night...MVFR/IFR with rain showers ending from west to east.
Chance of a thunderstorm in the evening east of Lake Ontario. Windy.

Monday through Wednesday...Mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
Exiting surface high pressure across New England this evening will
continue to push east as low pressure slides northeast into the
upper Great Lakes, strengthening southerly flow tonight into
Saturday. South-southeasterly breezes will remain elevated into
Sunday before turning southwesterly behind a strong passing cold
front. Despite the general offshore wind and wave action, winds
will be strong enough to warrant SCAs on the waters over the
weekend in some areas, and then possibly into early next week
as brisk winds become onshore.

.HYDROLOGY...
...FLOODING POSSIBLE EAST OF LAKE ONTARIO STARTING SUNDAY...

A strong and moisture rich system will move through the Great Lakes
and Northeast this weekend. Latest model and ensemble guidance
continues to support a general 0.35" to 0.75" across most of the
area, and 1.0" to 1.5" east of Lake Ontario. For western NY, these
rainfall amounts are not a concern with minimal snowpack left.

East of Lake Ontario, significant snowpack remains, especially
across the higher terrain of the Tug Hill Plateau and western
Adirondacks. 6" to 12" of SWE remains in the snowpack across the
higher terrain, and this snow is now fully ripened after several
warm spells. Runoff will ramp up significantly east of Lake Ontario
this weekend from a combination of snowmelt and rainfall.

The most likely larger river to reach flood stage will be the middle
and lower reaches of the Black River, with tributaries flowing from
many of the areas that still have significant snowpack. Latest
ensemble river guidance suggests Minor flood stage is the most
likely scenario, with a lower potential to approach moderate flood
stage. The upper reaches of the Black River and Moose River will
also see significant rises, with Action stage the most likely
scenario, and a low chance of Minor flood stage. Other rivers and
creeks that drain the Tug Hill Plateau and western Adirondacks will
also see significant rises, including but not limited to the Salmon
River system, the Beaver River, and the Independence River. A
Flood Watch is in effect for Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis
counties Sunday through Monday.

Simulated data shows ice on the Black River and other streams and
creeks east of Lake Ontario. Ice jam flooding is possible as rivers
and creeks begin to rise and ice breaks up Sunday through early next
week. There is high uncertainty in the exact timing and location of
any ice jams.
