.SYNOPSIS...
A wave of low pressure will slide east-northeast from the southern
Great Lakes and Ohio Valley tonight before crossing the area
Thursday. Initially, temperatures will be warm enough for mainly
rain with some wet snow, before colder air arrives Thursday
night supporting higher chances for some minor accumulating
snow, especially across higher terrain.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Low pressure will track across the southern Great Lakes and Ohio
Valley tonight. Precipitation will spread across western New
York late this evening. Current temperatures suggest rain will
be the predominant precipitation type. Some marginal or
isothermal profiles do show up tonight, mainly for the higher
terrain which would support the idea of some snow for a period
of time tonight, especially if rates are high enough which could
result in minor slushy accumulations.

The surface will track from western New York Thursday morning to
the Saint Lawrence Valley by afternoon. Warmer air preceding
the low will maintain mostly rain for the early portion of the
day. The system cold front will push through the region during
the afternoon giving way to more in the way of orographically-
forced precipitation east of the lakes, within a moist westerly
upslope regime behind the cold front. Cold advection behind the
front not overly impressive, so expect the precipitation type
to remain mostly rain except for the higher terrain east of the
lakes which should go back over to a mix of rain/snow or even
all snow through the afternoon. Any slushy accumulations should
be minor.

Secondary cold front pushes through Thursday night with profiles
becoming cold enough for all snow. The greatest precipitation
coverage likely found in favored areas of upslope flow east of the
lakes. Accumulations for the higher terrain east of Lake Erie look
minor and likely staying under 3 inches, with ensembles giving
only about a 25 percent chance to exceed 2 inches. The higher
terrain east of Lake Ontario should make out a little better
with probabilities near 50 percent to exceed 2 inches.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
A pair of shortwave troughs diving down across the Great Lakes from
Canada will deepen a longwave trough over the eastern Great Lakes
this period.

A slowly filling surface low will track across the Great Lakes
Friday and Friday night. Initial band of isentropic lift snow,
mixing with rain on the southern edge will expand across our region
later Friday and into Friday night. Wet snow of several inches is
likely near Lake Ontario and points eastward. There will likely be
two additional broken lines of precipitation passing across our
region Friday night and Saturday, one with the initial prefrontal
trough that will feature more rain than snow...then along the actual
cold front early Saturday that will feature snow showers along with
a gusty wind. In total advisory level snows east of Lake Ontario are
likely in the combined timeframe of Friday night to Saturday where a
half foot or more is possible.

Non diurnal temperature trend later Friday night and Saturday, with
temperatures rising through the second half of the night, then
sharply falling Saturday with the passage of the cold front.

Lake effect snow behind the cold front will focus upon areas
southeast of Lake Ontario by Saturday evening and along the entire
southern Lake Ontario shoreline Saturday night and into Sunday. The
passage of the mid level trough adding wind shear, along with the
veering of the winds to north-northwesterly will keep any upstream
connections to downwind of Lake Erie...thus limiting the snow
southeast and south of Lake Ontario to just a few inches. A narrow
band of lake snow may accumulate across far SW NYS...this aided by
an upstream connection to Lake Huron/Georgian Bay.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Canadian surface high pressure will settle over our region Sunday
and into Monday, diminishing lake snows southeast and then east of
Lake Ontario by Monday afternoon while also providing for a brief
period of much below normal temperatures. Lows Sunday night will
reach the single digits for a good portion of our region, and below
zero east of Lake Ontario and possibly the traditionally colder
spots of the inland Southern Tier.

Behind this surface high temperatures will begin to slowly
increase...such that by time the next system arrives later Tuesday
and Wednesday the precipitation type will mainly be in the form of
plain rain.

&&

.AVIATION /23Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pressure will slide east of the region through tonight,
with mid and high level clouds overspreading into the region
from the west. A surface wave will work its way towards the
region late this afternoon and tonight, supporting a period of
rain that will work from southwest to northeast. The
precipitation will be mainly rain or a mix of rain/snow, with a
better chance for snow across higher terrain. Conditions will
deteriorate to MVFR this evening with IFR conditions developing
at most sites tonight. Patchy fog across the Niagara Frontier
and higher terrain in the Southern Tier late tonight and
Thursday morning.

More showery precipitation which will mainly be rain Thursday,
although some snow is possible east of Lake Ontario and across
higher terrain. Low level moisture will support mainly IFR/MVFR
cigs during the day.

Outlook...

Thursday night...MVFR/IFR ceilings...with mainly rain showers
south of Lake Ontario and a mix of rain and snow showers east of
Lake Ontario.

Friday...VFR/MVFR with morning snow showers/IFR southeast of the
lakes diminishing from west to east during the afternoon.

Saturday...MVFR/IFR in mixed precipitation.

Sunday and Monday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow southeast of Lake
Ontario.

.MARINE...
High pressure pushing east across the lower Great Lakes will allow
for generally light and variable winds to persist across into this
evening. A frontal wave will work its way across the eastern
Great Lakes tonight through Thursday supporting brisk westerlies
in the wake of a departing area of low pressure may which may
support a round of advisory-worthy conditions on Lake Ontario
late Thursday through Friday.

A clipper low will move through the region early in the weekend
with west-northwesterlies developing behind the system
potentially bringing another round of advisory-worthy conditions
Saturday into Sunday, especially on Lake Ontario.

Winds will weaken by Monday as high pressure build across the lower
Great Lakes.

.HYDROLOGY...
While there will be a non-zero risk for ice jams on area waterways
through midweek given our ongoing spell of milder weather...this
risk should tend to remain fairly low given the combination of
expected temperatures the next few days and nights (which will run
lower compared to the previous 24 hours)...the lack of significant
rainfall...and the lack of any real sustained thaws since the start
of the year. The latter has likely led to a thicker buildup of ice
on our creeks...which should prove tougher to break up and dislodge
in the absence of a stronger warmup or significant rainfall.
