.SYNOPSIS...
A weak wave of low pressure will bring widespread light snowfall to
the region today. Limited lake effect snows will linger in the wake
of the system tonight. It will remain cold, though a day-to-day
warming trend can be expected through the weekend in addition to
spotty chances for additional snow. Unsettled weather through early
next week, though temperatures will finally climb above freezing
again across the region.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Water vapor satellite imagery early this morning indicating a broad
500mb low pivoting pivoting into the Ohio Valley from the Upper
Midwest, with a weaker circulation hanging to our north across
southern Quebec. These two features will phase over the course of
the day as the primary area of cyclonic rotation aloft moves east
across Pennsylvania. Coupled with a weak wave of sfc low pressure
and deepening synoptic moisture, we can expect light, fluffy snow to
overspread the region from the southwest through the course of the
day. This is in addition to the ongoing lake enhanced snows south-
southeast of the lakes, which will continue through the day with
cold (850 T's around -17C) northwest flow not budging as the system
moves through. These lake effect areas south-southeast of the lakes,
in addition to the ongoing snow showers early this morning, may
occasionally experience moderate snowfall. Additional snowfall
amounts through this afternoon should total around 1-2" in most
areas across Western NY, with less than an inch east of Lake
Ontario. The lake effect and orographic lift will lead to higher
totals in a some areas, particularly the Chautauqua Ridge where up
to 3-5" inches of snow could fall by day's end.

Outside of the snowfall potential, it will be another cold day today
though temperatures will be a few degrees warmer compared to the
past couple of days. A light to modest breeze will still lead to
wind chills in the single digits.

The upper level system will move off the Northeast Coast and into
the northern Atlantic tonight. Cold, moist cyclonic NW flow will
continue through the night, which will spur additional lake
effect/upslope snow shower activity across the region. These snows
should generally be light as EQLs (even over the mostly ice-free
Lake Ontario) look to be below 5kft with sub-optimal amounts of
fetch. Still, a nearly fully saturated DGZ through much of the night
should allow snows to be persistent, potentially adding on another
inch or two south of the lakes, with localized 2-4" amounts across
the Chautauqua Ridge and from eastern Monroe to Northern Cayuga
counties.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Friday and Friday night low level ridging will gradually build east
across the Great Lakes...with the axis of the ridge cresting across
our region Friday night...then sliding just to our east by sunrise
on Saturday. An attendant increase in drying...subsidence...and
shear will result in leftover nuisance lake effect snow showers
southeast of the lakes Friday morning gradually diminishing from
west to east during Friday...with backing of the low level flow
sending the remnants northward across the east ends of both lakes
later Friday night and early Saturday morning. Expect only minor
accumulations out of these (up to an inch off Lake Erie and 1-2" off
Lake Ontario)...with dry weather otherwise prevailing. Meanwhile
temps will remain solidly below normal...with highs on Friday
ranging from the mid teens to lower 20s...and lows Friday night in
the single digits across the North Country and the 10-15 range south
of Lake Ontario.

On Saturday the flattening ridge axis will depart across New
England...while a mid-level trough and surface low slide across
Hudson Bay. The warm advection regime and backing of the low level
flow in between these two systems will result in any remaining lake
effect snow showers east and northeast of Lake Ontario finally
coming to an end...with dry weather prevailing elsewhere. Owing to
the warm advection pattern...highs on Saturday will recover back
into the upper 20s to mid 30s in most areas...though the warming
will be offset by a freshening southwesterly wind that will help to
keep apparent temperatures in the teens and 20s.

Saturday night the aforementioned low pressure system will pivot its
trailing cold front across Quebec...while to its south a modest
shortwave will slide across the central and eastern Great Lakes.
Subtle veering of the low level flow and an increase in moisture out
ahead of these features should lead to some renewed lake effect snow
showers east of the lakes...more notably off Lake Ontario where the
open lake and more favorable environment should allow for a couple
fresh inches of accumulation in the vicinity of the Tug Hill by
Sunday morning. Meanwhile off Lake Erie...the mostly ice covered
lake and less favorable environment should lead to a considerably
more muted response. Outside of these areas conditions will be
dry...with lows ranging from the upper teens to lower 20s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Broad/flat upper-level troughing will dominate our region through
the long term portion of the forecast...with a number of embedded
shortwave troughs and weak surface waves crossing our region during
this period. While this will result in periodic opportunities for
some light precipitation as we work through this period...the lack
of any truly cold/arctic air (which will remain bottled up well to
our north) will allow for temperatures to climb to...then remain at
above normal levels as we push through the first half of the new
work week.

Digging a little deeper into the forecast details...on Sunday the
ongoing lake response east of the lakes should gradually fade over
time as the axis of another flat low-level ridge pushes east across
the Lower Great Lakes...and as warm advection redevelops. Expect
some additional nuisance accumulations east of Lake Ontario...with
little if anything east of Lake Erie. Otherwise the day should be
mainly dry...with highs ranging from the upper 20s across the higher
terrain to the lower to mid 30s across the lower elevations.

Sunday night through Wednesday will then feature the passage of at
least three shortwaves and their associated surface reflections...
with each of these a bit stronger than its predecessor. Each will
provide corresponding shots of warm air advection...such that
daytime highs Monday through Wednesday should generally range in at
least the mid 30s to lower 40s. The resulting warmer temperature
profiles may thus allow any precip from these systems to mix with
and/or change over to plain rain during each day...then back to snow
at night.

.AVIATION /09Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A large area of low pressure aloft will move south of the region
Thursday. Through the remainder of the night, increasing moisture
out ahead of this system with continued cold northwest flow across
the lakes will continue to spur the development of stratocu with
cigs 1500-2500ft and occasional snow showers with vsbys 2-4SM.
Meanwhile, mainly VFR expected to prevail across the North Country
where skies are clearer.

Outside of the main lake effect areas, the system on Thursday will
spread light to periodically moderate snows across the entire
region. This will first impact the western counties after 11z
Thursday morning before spreading east across the Genesee Valley and
Finger Lakes through Thursday afternoon. MVFR cigs with IFR to LIFR
vsbys expected to prevail within this area of snow. The light snow
and lower cigs will reach the eastern Lake Ontario region later in
the day, though confidence is lower in potential impacts to vsbys at
KART.

The system will move away from the East Coast Thursday night. Snow
will transition back to being mainly driven by lake effect and weak
orographic lift. Continued impacts to vsbys down to IFR likely at
the terminals south of the lakes while cigs remain MVFR. Coverage
and intensity of snows expected to diminish after 06z.

Outlook...

Friday...Mainly VFR. A chance of snow showers.
Saturday and Sunday...VFR.
Monday...VFR/MVFR. A chance of snow showers.

.MARINE...
Northwest winds will begin to freshen this afternoon as a weak wave
of low pressure crosses the region, then likely remain elevated
across Lake Ontario into Friday night before turning offshore. As
such, have issued SCAs for the southern Lake Ontario shoreline
through this period. Winds will likely remain below SCA criteria
across Lake Erie.

A period of strengthening southwesterly winds are possible this
weekend as a tighter pressure gradient develops over the lower
Great Lakes ahead of the next system.
