.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will bring widespread light to moderate accumulating
snow to the area through early Sunday morning, with a light wintry
mix possible at times across the Southern Tier. A few lake effect
snow showers will continue Sunday through Monday southeast of the
lakes with localized minor additional accumulations.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Surface low pressure tracking across the eastern Ohio/Tennessee
Valleys into SW Pennsylvania late this evening will give way to
secondary cyclogenesis off the New Jersey/Long Island coast
overnight. Divergent flow under the poleward exit region of a 160kt
250H jet and mid-level frontogenesis on the northern periphery of
the sfc low has been bringing widespread snow to the forecast area,
with a few moderate to locally heavy bands forming at times where
these areas of enhanced convergence/FGEN are present. As the
system's mid-level dry slot works into the region from the Ohio
Valley and the coastal low becomes the more dominant feature, expect
the peak snowfall rates and coverage to taper off, first across WNY
with the North Country to follow through the pre-dawn hours Sunday
morning. This is already being observed across portions of WNY and
the Southern Tier late this evening as the heavier snowfall threat
shifts east of the Genesee Valley, though a secondary area of
widespread snow currently over southern Ontario noted on regional
radar is expected to wrap back into western NY late tonight into
early Sunday morning. In addition, the lack of moisture in the DGZ
while weak low-level lift remains present could spur the development
of some patchy freezing drizzle overnight before colder air changes
the ptype solidly back over to snow, particularly in the Southern
Tier.

Additional snowfall overnight should generally range from 1-2"
across WNY north of Buffalo and Batavia and less than 1" from
Buffalo and Batavia Southward, while the eastern Lake Ontario region
will likely see another 3-5", with the greater totals expected
across the higher terrain around the Tug Hill and Western Dacks.

As the low passes early Sunday morning, pure synoptic snows will
wind down but we could see some limited lake enhancement in the
favored N-NW upslope areas, resulting in some additional snow
showers. That said, additional accumulations will be minor with less
than 2" in the most persistent snows Sunday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Zonal flow across New York State Sunday night through Monday, will
give way to a trough sliding east across southern Canada Monday
night through Tuesday. This pattern will generally support surface
high pressure to slide east from the Northern Plains to the eastern
Great Lakes by Monday night and eventually sliding further east
Tuesday, making way for a weak cold front to slide east across the
area Tuesday night.

In the wake of a shortwave trough passage, and associated surface
wave Sunday night, temperatures at 850 will plummet to around -16C
resulting in ongoing northwesterly flow lake effect activity Sunday
night to reinvigorate into health bands through Monday. This will
especially be the case for the lake band off of Lake Ontario. As
such several inches of snow may fall Sunday night through Monday,
mainly from Rochester to Fulton. While there will be a limited lake
response off of Lake Erie, any accumulations will be lighter and
generally less than two inches.

Surface high pressure will continue to build east across the lower
Great Lakes Monday and Monday night before shifting further east
Tuesday. Lake effect southeast of Lake Ontario Monday morning will
continue to linger throughout the day and night. As high pressure
crosses the area Monday night through Tuesday, dry air will advect
into the region along with causing winds to veer to the southwest,
resulting in lake effect snow showers to peter out and gradually
shift north to the Saint Lawrence Valley by Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile to the south of New York State Tuesday, weak surface low
will slide east across the Ohio Valley into the mid-Atlantic
resulting in the far northern edge of the system to brush the far
southern portions of New York state resulting in a few flurries.

A cold front helping to usher the surface high pressure east Tuesday
will cross the area from northwest to southeast Tuesday night,
supporting a brief period of snow showers.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The long term period looks to remain active with a couple of systems
for the second half of the week and the weekend, along with some
potential lake enhancement/effect in between. Temperatures during
the period will remain near to below normal, with Wednesday and
Friday expected to be the two coldest days with highs 5 to 10
degrees below normal.

Wednesday and Wednesday night, a few snow showers will be possible
in the morning behind a passing cold front. Otherwise most of the
day into the evening should be dry. Wednesday night, an area of low
pressure will track from the mid-Mississippi Valley to near western
NY through the night. Out ahead of the sfc low, precipitation,
mainly in the form of snow, will develop along the systems warm
front. This will bring precipitation into most of the forecast area
by the late evening on Wednesday.

By Thursday morning, the sfc low will center over/near the WNY area
and continue to provide the potential for precipitation through at
least the first half of the day on Thursday. Guidance forecast track
for the sfc low has shifted slightly farther north, which would
increase the potential for at least some mixing with the snow,
especially for the lower elevations. This is still several days out
and changes to the track and expected precipitation type are sure to
occur.

As the system tracks away from the region, and cold air pushes into
the area, lake enhanced and then lake effect snow should develop
later Thursday and through much of Friday, and potentially into
Friday night.

Another area of low pressure will track toward the region, once
again developing over the Central U.S. and tracking across the Ohio
Valley. Certainty is also low with the systems track/speed, which
will have impacts on precip type and amounts.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Low pressure will move off the southern New England coast this
morning, with the widespread light to moderate snow quickly tapering
off from west to east by daybreak. Some lake effect snow will linger
along the south shore of Lake Ontario through mid morning before
mostly breaking up by late morning. IFR VSBY will continue in areas
of snow through this morning, with LIFR east of Lake Ontario before
daybreak in moderate snow. CIGS will generally be a mix of MVFR/IFR.

Later this afternoon through tonight, expect lake effect snow
showers to increase in coverage again southeast of Lake Ontario with
the arrival of colder air aloft. WNW flow will direct most of these
snow showers from east of KROC to near KFZY, with local IFR/LIFR
conditions. Outside of this area, expect mainly dry conditions with
nothing more than a few flurries from this afternoon through
tonight. CIGS will generally be a mix of VFR/MVFR, with MVFR favored
across higher terrain and in lake effect areas.

Outlook...

Monday...VFR/MVFR at most terminals, localized IFR in lake
effect snow near the southeast corner of Lake Ontario.

Tuesday through Wednesday...VFR/MVFR, with a chance of snow showers.

Wednesday night through Thursday...Widespread IFR in accumulating
snow, possibly changing to a wintry mix Thursday.

.MARINE...
Low pressure will then pass south of the lower Great Lakes
overnight. Northeast winds will increase on Lake Ontario as a
result, producing a brief round of Small Craft Advisory conditions
along the south shore of the lake.

Winds will then become northwest by Sunday morning, with west to
northwest winds strengthening on Lake Ontario by Sunday afternoon
and evening, producing another brief period of Small Craft Advisory
conditions on Lake Ontario. Have hoisted small crafts beginning late
tonight through Monday morning on Lake Ontario.
