.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front moving through the area late this afternoon will usher
in a colder airmass with strengthening winds in its wake gusting to
as high as 50 mph into early Friday morning. Meanwhile...the
deepening cold air will set the stage for significant lake snows
southeast of Lake Ontario. Finally...a storm system tracking by to
our south will all but guarantee a widespread accumulating snowfall
of at LEAST several inches late Saturday and Saturday night.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
A pronounced mid level dry slot has all but ended the widespread
significant pcpn across the region. There are still areas of
drizzle...with some freezing drizzle and areas of snow still found
east of Wayne county. This pcpn will taper off as well by nightfall.

Otherwise...the next main weather to contend with will be the
strengthening winds found in the wake of a passing cold front.
Southwest winds will increase throughout the region with widespread
gusts over 40 mph...with some areas picking up gusts to as high as
45-50 mph by Friday morning. A widespread wind advisory will remain
in effect for this wind event.

Tonight a cold front will cross our region with decent cold air
advection. Temperatures at 850 hPa will drop from -7C to -16C
through the night. Another LLJ, this a bit stronger at 60 knots at
5K feet along with favorable downward momentum within a cold air
advection regime will produce wind gusts well into the 40 mph range,
and perhaps lower 50 mph range near the Lakes. This westerly flow is
a favorable flow for our entire region to become windy...and thus
will have a wind advisory our for our entire region. Will begin this
in the west this afternoon to account for the southwest flow off the
Lake, and then by 00Z elsewhere. Strongest winds through the night
will begin to diminish in the west the second half of the night as
the core of the LLJ pushes eastward.

The initial main area of synoptic moisture will exit to the east
early in the evening...only to be replaced by another area of
moisture...this associated with a northern branch shortwave trough.
As far as precipitation tonight, areas east of Lake Erie will see
any light drizzle or light rain change over the snow with the
frontal passage. Not much as far as accumulating snow here. East of
Lake Ontario upslope snow and any freezing drizzle will taper down
through the evening hours. The westerly flow will maintain some
upslope precipitation along the Tug Hill, that with deepening cold
air and rising lake induced equilibrium levels will begin to form a
band of lake effect snow. This snowband with some wind shear will
remain disorganized over the Tug Hill, but as winds become better
aligned from the west-northwest wind direction a band of moderate
accumulating snow is expected for far southern Lewis and into Oswego
Counties. The still strong winds, and increasing snow ratios, will
create blowing and drifting to the snow along with poor
visibilities.

Lows tonight will range from the upper teens interior regions to the
lower 20s near Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes region. These low
temperatures along with the west-northwest breezy wind late
overnight will reduce apparent temperatures to the single digits for
most areas.

Friday through late Friday night, a mid level trough will move
east across Quebec, delivering a fresh batch of cold air to the
eastern Great Lakes and New England. This will set the stage for
a return to lake effect snow, with accumulating snow mainly
relegated to areas southeast of Lake Ontario.

Lake induced equilibrium levels will briefly rise to near 10K feet
early Friday morning, then settle to around 7K feet Friday afternoon
through late Friday night. Despite the shallow inversion
heights, a favorably deep dentritic growth zone will be found in
the cloud bearing layer beneath the inversion. Latest model
guidance also suggests there will be an upstream connection to
Lake Huron at times, enhancing convergence and snowfall rates
within the Lake Ontario band. WNW flow will direct the stronger
portion of the lake effect snow band into Oswego County most of
the time from Friday through late Friday night, with the
typical north/south oscillations at times with subtle changes in
boundary layer flow. It will be quite windy Friday, with
blowing and drifting snow in and near the lake effect snow band.

Expect a band of light to moderate snow across Oswego County Friday
morning. The band may weaken and break up into more cellular snow
showers for a time Friday afternoon, with the now higher early
February sun angle resulting in more diurnal boundary layer mixing
over land, which can disrupt the convergence of lake effect snow
bands. The band should then reorganize and strengthen Friday night
over Oswego County, with the greatest snowfall rates likely occuring
during this time frame.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
A surface ridge will build north across Lake Ontario Saturday as the
center of the surface high traverses east across Pennsylvania. This
will cause the band over Oswego County to weaken and shrink back
toward the shoreline through the morning hours with an additional
localized inch or two possible over west-central Oswego County
before shutting down midday/early afternoon. Mainly dry weather
expected elsewhere to start the weekend.

As the last of the lake effect flakes dissipate east of Lake Ontario
Saturday afternoon, the next system will be consolidating as it
rapidly moves east from the mid-Mississippi valley to the lower Ohio
valley Saturday afternoon, which may bring some light snow across
portions of western NY by late in the day Saturday.

Widespread, moderate synoptic snow continues to look likely across
the entire region Saturday night. The only real change is a
continued ever so slight nudge southward to the low track, which
pushes any mixed precipitation even further south into PA, but also
may lower snowfall amounts just a bit across the North Country now
being closer to the northern edge of the envelope. The setup...a
progressive, open mid level wave will move rapidly across the US,
with a modest surface low moving quickly from the Ohio Valley
Saturday evening to off the southern New England coast by Sunday
morning. A differential temperature advection pattern north of the
low track will enhance mid level frontogenesis and deformation,
supporting a swath of accumulating snow across the eastern Great
Lakes. This system is not particularly strong, and it will be fast
moving, so the most likely outcome is a solid advisory snow event
with moderate accumulations falling mainly Saturday night.

The synoptic snow will quickly exit Sunday morning. A northwest flow
of colder air and some lingering synoptic moisture in the wake of
the system will support the likelihood of lake effect snow showers
southeast of Lake Ontario Sunday through Sunday night with minor
additional accumulations.

Otherwise, daytime highs will mainly range through the 20s both days.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Aside from possible lingering light lake effect snow showers east of
Lake Ontario Monday, high pressure should bring a mainly dry start
to the new work week.

Our attention then turns back to the synoptic scale, as the active
pattern across the central and eastern US continues. Additional
southern stream shortwave energy is forecast to reach the east coast
by the middle of next week, with one or several waves of low
pressure moving through the Ohio Valley and Mid Atlantic States.
There continues to be considerable spread on the timing, track, and
amplitude of these features, so for now continued with mainly chance
PoPs for snow Tuesday through Thursday. If these systems track close
enough to our region, more rounds of accumulating snow are possible.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
IFR to MVFR cigs of 700-1500 feet will be found throughout most of
the region for the remainder of the afternoon. While the widespread
pcpn has ended...there will still be areas of light snow or freezing
drizzle east of Lake Ontario. Meanwhile...sfc wind gusts will
continue to pick up with gusts as high as 40 kts.

Tonight...most areas will experience VFR conditions...but it will
become increasingly wind with gusts as high as 45 knots. The only
area that will have MVFR weather will be well south of KART where
some lake effect snow will become established after 08z.

Friday...it will be windy (gusts to 40 kts early) with mainly VFR
conditions. The exception will remain southeast of Lake Ontario
where well defined lake snows will be in place. This will result in
MVFR to LIFR vsbys at sites like KFZY.

Outlook...

Saturday...VFR becoming IFR/LIFR with snow late in the day. Snow
through the night.
Sunday...MVFR/VFR with a chance for light snow showers and local
IFR southeast of the Lakes.
Monday AND Tuesday...Mainly VFR.

Southwest then west winds will quickly ramp up following the passage
of the system's cold front into this evening with gale force winds
appearing likely on both lakes. With winds looking a bit stronger in
the latest guidance and also starting a bit earlier on Lake Erie...
have hoisted a Gale Warning through much of tonight. On Lake
Ontario winds will likely be stronger...though will also start somewhat
later...and for this reason a Gale Watch remains in effect there for
the time being.
