.SYNOPSIS...
Temperatures will fall steadily tonight through the first half of
week. Light snow showers and flurries are possible tonight through
Sunday. The coldest air in more than five years will build over the
region Monday through Wednesday and this will result in dangerously
low wind chills regionwide, along with accumulating lake snows east
and northeast of the lakes.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
An arctic boundary has passed across our region this evening,
with regional radars displaying the last of the now snow showers
mainly over higher terrain. The airmass behind the front dries
out considerably with most of the snow eroding, with only some
light snow showers or flurries leftover across upslope areas
tonight. Temperatures are now below freezing and residual moisture
on roadways from earlier rain or snow, may freeze on untreated
roadways, leading to some slick spots. The continued cold advection
will send overnight temperatures into the teens across western New
York with some single digits readings across the western Southern
Tier and east of Lake Ontario. Wind chills tonight in the single
digits to near zero.

Arctic air will continue to surge into the region Sunday.
Temperatures only gaining a few degrees through the day with most
highs in the upper teens to around 20s degrees, with winds
chills remaining in the single digits to near zero. Western and
north central New York will be on the western fringes of a coastal
low tracking northeastward along the mid-Atlantic coastline by
late Sunday. Likely not looking at much of an impact from this
system, but could add some additional moisture to profiles
allowing for the potential for some minor lake enhanced snows
within a generally northerly flow.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
...FRIGID COLD TEMPERATURES AND SIGNIFICANT LAKE EFFECT SNOWS
POSSIBLE EARLY NEXT WEEK...

For the end of the weekend through the start of early next week,
broad mid-level troughing spread across much of the CONUS will not
only support an arctic airmass to spill across the Great Lakes
region, but a few shortwave trough passages to round its base as
well. The combination of the cold air and the shortwave trough
passages will support favorable lake effect conditions and result in
a few days of lake effect snow downwind of the lakes.

Diving into the details...

Heading into Sunday night, a surface low riding north-northeast
along the Atlantic Seaboard Sunday, will continue its northeastward
progression towards the Gulf of Maine, before exiting into the
Canadian Maritimes Monday. As this low pulls north out of the region
late Sunday night and Monday, a pool of arctic air will fill in
across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast. Meanwhile, initial
northwest flow Sunday night will gradually back to the west-
southwest by mid Monday morning across WNY and early afternoon
across the eastern Lake Ontario region. Initially, northwest flow
combined with wrap around moisture from the departing low, along
with the plummeting temperatures Sunday evening will support
favorable lake enhancement and upslope driven snows southeast of
Lake Erie as equilibrium levels climb up between 11 and 13 thousand
feet. Given the nature of the low level flow Sunday night, a more
multiband nature of lake effect is expected. Then as winds back and
shift to the west-southwest Monday/Monday evening, lake snows will
gradually congeal and strengthen into one dominant band. This
consolidation will occur first off of Lake Erie, likely around mid
morning before occurring east of Lake Ontario later Monday
afternoon/early evening. This being said off of Lake Erie, the
initial band will consolidate across the Chautauqua Ride and Boston
Hills Monday morning before lifting north into the Buffalo
southtowns. Off of Lake Ontario, bands will congeal along the
southern shoreline of the lake before lifting north and settling
across the Tug Hill Plateau Monday night.

Ahead of a shortwave trough passage late Tuesday and Tuesday night
will support winds to back a few degrees further to the southwest
during the middle of the day Tuesday, resulting in ongoing lake
effect snows east of the lakes to drift slightly north. Gradual
veering in the wake of the shortwave trough passage Tuesday night
will aid lake effect bands to drift back south. Additionally,
surface ridging sliding across the Ohio Valley will introduce some
drying and decrease equilibrium heights causing some weakening in
the lake effect activity late Tuesday night.

Looking into the potenial lake effect snowfall accumulations from
Sunday night onward, forecast uncertainty remains due to the unknown
orientation of the low level flow (directly impacting not only the
lake effect band location but also the band residency time) and the
arctic cold air mass overhead (impacting the main dendritic growth
zone to lie  beneath the areas of greatest lift and richest
moisture, impacting the snowfall rates). Despite this and given the
other favorable thermodynamics and fetch along the long axes of both
lakes, the potential for significant lake snows remain. The more
favorable location continues to remain east of Lake Ontario due to
the more favorable orographic features (i.e. the Tug Hill Plateau)
will aid in snow production late Monday through Monday night. As of
this forecast iteration, preliminary snowfall amounts range from
over 2 feet across the center of the Tug Hill to between 1-2 feet
for the areas surrounding, including the city of Watertown.
Meanwhile off of Lake Erie, a swath of 1-2 feet of snow
accumulations will be likely across Northern Chautauqua and
northwestern Cattaraugus counties and into southern Erie county.
Additionally amounts of 8 to 16 inches will be possible as far north
as the Buffalo Southtowns and into southern Genesee County.

With all of the above outlined, and due to the uncertainty in the
timing of the low level flow, Winter Storm Watches for lake effect
snow continue for WNY and eastern Lake Ontario. Additionally, ahead
of the organized lake effect band Monday, multiband snows southeast
of Lake Ontario will likely support some headline-worthy as the lake
effect becomes more organized, however with snowfall amounts nearing
the cusp of headline amounts and the lower confidence will continue
to hold off on headlines for now, though will keep an eye on this
for the upcoming forecasts.

Outside of the snow forecast, the other main headline for early next
week is the frigid cold temperatures and bone-chilling wind chill
values. Temperatures at 850mb will fall towards -20C Monday and
towards -24C Tuesday night. Overall this will result in high
temperatures struggling to climb out of the single digits Monday and
Tuesday, and lows to dive into the negative single digits Monday
night and Tuesday night. These temperatures coupled with the breezy
winds Monday and Tuesday will result in wind chill values dipping
between -15 to -25 range at times Monday through Tuesday night,
likely necessitating the issuance of Extreme Cold Weather Advisories.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A ridge will build into the region for Wednesday and Thursday, which
is expected to cut down on the lake response off of both lakes.
Winds will shift to the south-southwest, resulting in any remaining
lake effect to push north through the day Wednesday and Wednesday
night. 850H temperatures are expected to remain favorable for most
of the period, but drier air moving into the region with the ridge,
will also help cut down on the lake potential. A few weak passing
disturbances for later Wednesday into Thursday will help to keep
lake snow showers to some extent downwind of both lakes, whether
it's in Canada or the BUF CWA will depend on the day and the winds.

A passing shortwave trough on Friday will help increase the lake
response off of both lakes, while also bringing the lake bands back
south, generally east-northeast of the lakes. A brief increase of
synoptic moisture within the trough is also expected.

As the trough exits to the east and a ridge starts to build into the
region on Friday night, the lake response will once again start to
weaken and shift north. Lake snow will continue to weaken and push
north on Saturday as an area of low pressure tracks just north of
the area and the frontal boundaries come into play. There is still
too much uncertainty among the various guidance packages for the
Saturday setup.

Temperatures for the period will start out well below normal for
Wednesday with highs in the single digits to low teens. Day-to-day
warming will bring temperatures back close to normal by Saturday
with highs in the mid 20s to low 30s. 850H temperatures will remain
around -14C or colder through Friday afternoon, before warm air
advection increases these values to above -10C through the day on
Saturday.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Northwest winds will continue late this evening across western and
north central NY. Light snow showers and flurries are possible
overnight as moisture pulls away from the region. MVFR ceilings will
persist late tonight before improving to low-end VFR by daybreak
Sunday. Moisture will approach the region from the south Sunday and
ceilings will likely move back into MVFR and/or low-end VFR. Light
snow showers will brush up against the region Sunday into Sunday
evening. This will cause a period of light snow showers. Lake
enhanced snow showers will develop near the Lake Erie shoreline and
the southern shoreline of Lake Ontario Sunday evening. This activity
has a greater potential to bring IFR or below conditions at KJHW,
KIAG, and KROC.

Outlook...

Sunday night...MVFR with areas of light snow. Brief IFR
visibilities.

Monday through Wednesday...Local LIFR in lake effect snow east of
the lakes, mainly VFR elsewhere.

Thursday...Mainly VFR.

Occasional moderate west to northwest winds behind a cold front will
continue marginal Small Craft Advisory conditions on Lake
Ontario overnight.

Winds relax on the lower Great lakes late tonight through Sunday
night and this will allow for SCA to end.

A prolonged period of Small Craft Advisory conditions will occur
Sunday night and through most if not all of next week as one of the
coldest airmasses of the season, and in a few years for that matter
passes over the eastern Great Lakes. As such the combination of cold
temperatures and breezy winds will bring freezing spray to at least
Lake Erie, and possibly Lake Ontario as well from time to time
through Thursday morning.
