.SYNOPSIS...
Our attention will be focused on an impactful storm system that will
lumber its way from the southern plains to directly over us by
daybreak Sunday. This feature will spread accumulating snow over the
whole region on Saturday...then the precipitation will change to a
wintry mix Saturday night with many of the western counties
completely turning over to a period of just rain. In the wake of the
deep storm system...the precipitation will change back to just snow
later Sunday and Sunday night. Arctic air featuring widespread sub
zero wind chills will follow for the first half of the work week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure centered over our area will exit across New
England overnight. Temperatures will slowly rise overnight as a
southeast flow develops.

Conditions will deteriorate across the entire region on Saturday...
as ongoing cyclogenesis over the southern Plains will yield an
increasingly organized area of low pressure over the Lower
Mississippi valley by late afternoon. An inverted sfc trough
extending northeastward from the evolving sfc low will be centered
over the Upper Great Lakes on Saturday...while a tightening H925-70
baroclinic zone will be found across our forecast area. Lift in the
lower levels within this environment will act upon a deepening
moisture field so that widespread snow will break out from southwest
to northeast during the course of the day. While the snow will
generally be light in intensity...it should be steady enough to
support 1 to 3 inch accumulations by the end of the day. If you have
plans to go anywhere...the earlier the better.

A well organized...deepening area of low pressure will then approach
our forecast area from the Ohio valley Saturday night. Warm
advection ahead of this system will not only help in producing more
widespread pcpn...but it will moderate the environment to the point
where the snow will fairly quickly change to a mix of sleet and
freezing rain from south to north. In fact...the bulk of the western
counties are forecast to experience mainly just rain after midnight.
An area of lower confidence will be found across the counties lining
the south shore of Lake Ontario and across the North country
though...as guidance depicts a range of storm track solutions that
include a more southerly track that would keep the pcpn as mainly
snow near and east of Lk Ontario. Snow and sleet accumulations will
range from an inch or so over the western counties where a non
diurnal temp trend is anticipated...to 3 to 5 inches across the
North country where the pcpn is likely to remain mostly in the form
of snow.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for all of the western
counties for the wintry mix...while a winter storm watch will remain
in place for the NOrth country for the potential for more impactful
snowfall.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Sunday will begin with still mixed precipitation issues with a large
scale synoptic storm near our region. Models still have differences
among the track of this deepening surface low, with the 00Z ECMWF/
12Z Canadian and most of the 12Z GEFS farther south and eastward,
while the American models of the 12Z GFS and NAM are farther north
and west with the track.

This will make a complicated forecast, with the of start of Sunday
possibly with a warm layer aloft of 850 hPa temperatures near +5/6C
that would yield mainly rain/freezing rain south of the Thruway,
with sleet and snow farther northward. Colder solutions of the GEFS
and Euro and Canadian would favor a snowier solution. Since the warm
layer aloft tends to push northward quicker and farther than model
guidance will side with the warmer solution which would have more
rain than snow for WNY by Sunday morning.

This mixed precipitation will quickly end from west to east through
the afternoon as a sharp cold front passes across the region. One
concern is the falling temperatures of perhaps 10 degrees in just a
few hours which these now mid 20 temperatures would create a flash
freeze on roads...especially where rain occurs and cleans off the
salt.

Snow along the front and then wrap around moist cyclonic flow snow
will continue Sunday afternoon through the night, with a general 2-4
inches, perhaps higher east of Lake Ontario on the Tug Hill where
lake effect snow will begin to take shape Monday. Lake induced
equilibrium levels rising to 10K feet along with low level convergence
along the long fetch of Lake Ontario will develop a band of snow SE
of Lake Ontario Monday, remaining through Monday night. Though
deeper synoptic moisture will be limited, an upstream connection to
the central Lakes will enhance this band of snow, with again
moderate accumulations expected.

The other big concern this period will be the winds. The suite of
models of the GFS/NAM/Canadian and ECMWF all deepen this surface low
to sub 970 mph by Monday afternoon to the north and east of Maine. A
very tight pressure gradient, along with a 50 to 55 knot LLJ will
promote strong winds Sunday night through Monday night, with
direction of west to northwest. Gusts to 45 mph or greater are
likely depending upon the strength of this low...with the strongest
gusts south of Lake Ontario and across the Lake Plain...as well as
the higher the higher terrain such as the Wyoming and Bristol Hills.
These strong winds plus deepening cold airmass will likely lead to
wind chills dropping below -15/-20F by Monday night.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Zonal mid level flow spread across New York State Tuesday will give
way to ridging the build in across the Great Lakes Tuesday night and
Wednesday. In the lower levels and the surface, west-northwest flow
with the colder airmass overhead wil support lake effect processes
to continue and produce accumulating snows southeast of Lake Ontario
Tuesday and Tuesday night. Surface high pressure will build east
across the Great Lakes Wednesday, drying out the lower levels and
acting to diminish the lake effect snow.

The next mid-level closed low will dive southeast across the  Great
Lakes and then pivot across the Ohio Valley before lifting northeast
into the Northeast/northern Atlantic. As such, the next Colorado low
will slide across the southeastern United States before lifting
northeast along the Eastern Seaboard Wednesday night through Friday.
While this is the general pattern, the exact location of the low
will dictate the weather for the area. A western more track will
support chances for snow, while an eastern track in the Atlantic
will keep the area dry. Will have to keep an eye this system as the
week progresses.

Otherwise, temperatures will start off on the colder side Tuesday
with highs in the low to mid teens. Temperatures will then modulate
throughout the rest of the week and warm into the upper teens to low
20s by Friday.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Widespread VFR conditions will continue across western and
north central NY overnight.

On Saturday...a far reaching storm system developing over the
southern plains and Lower Mississippi valley will help to generate a
widespread snowfall across the entire region. The shield of
steady snow will make its way across the southern tier early in
the morning and will progressively spread to the northeast
through the afternoon. Conditions will significantly deteriorate
in the process with cigs dropping to IFR to MVFR levels and
vsbys solidly in the LIFR to IFR range by midday.

Snow will transition to a mix of sleet and freezing rain from south
to north across western NY Saturday evening. The wintry mix will
eventually turn to rain overnight. LIFR to IFR conditions will
continue across the region.

The snowfall could impact ground operations Saturday afternoon
through Saturday evening.

Outlook...

Saturday night and Sunday...IFR/LIFR in mixed wintry precipitation
that wil change back to snow later Sunday.
Monday and Tuesday...VFR/MVFR. Lake effect snow showers likely southeast
of the lakes.
Wednesday...Mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
High pressure will pass over the region overnight. This will
allow winds and waves to subside on Lake Ontario.

East to southeast winds will freshen throughout the region on
Saturday...especially on lake Ontario...as a developing storm system
will move to the Lower Ohio valley. Given the offshore flow...
headlines should not be necessary.

As the deepening storm system approaches from the Ohio valley
Saturday night...easterly winds will continue to strengthen...again
mainly on Lake Ontario where some gale force wind gusts over the
western half will be possible.

Looking further ahead...gale force winds from the west will become
increasingly likely Sunday night through Monday...as the
aforementioned storm system will exit across New England and the
Canadian maritimes. A gale watch has been issued on Lake Ontario to
cover this potential risk.
