.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will pass across the region late Monday with
precipitation possibly starting as rain, though quickly changing to
a bit of accumulating snow. This system will produce a coating of
snow Monday night into Tuesday morning, though higher terrain east
of Lake Erie will accumulate an inch or two with the higher terrain
east of Lake Ontario possibly receiving several inches of snow.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
A ribbon of mid level energy will continue to generate some very
light snow and flurries across the Southern Tier into the wee hours
of the morning...otherwise high and mid level clouds will be found
across the region.

On Monday...a narrow wedge of high pressure will pass across the
region. Skies will clear of lower clouds, though cirrus will remain
promoting filtered sunshine through the midday hours before clouds
thicken from the west ahead of a strong cold front in the afternoon.
There is high confidence among the ensemble and high resolution
models that this front will bring initial rain, quickly changing to
snow showers that will push into our far western region by early
evening.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
An anomalously deep upper level trough will move across the eastern
Great Lakes region early this coming work week. Cold air will spill
into the region and induce snow showers including accumulating snow
east of the Lakes.

A potent shortwave trough will start to become negatively tilted as
it enters the eastern Great Lakes region Monday night. A compact
surface low will move from Lake Huron to southern Quebec and an
associated cold front will move across the forecast area Monday
evening. Anafrontal snow showers will move from west to east
overnight. A few showers may begin as rain, however strong cold air
advection will quickly change any rain over to snow. Drier air will
move into the forecast area from west to east and widespread snow
showers will taper off across western NY the second half of the
night. A cold, westerly flow with 850mb temperatures down to -15C by
Tuesday morning will generate a lake response off Lake Erie and Lake
Ontario. A westerly flow will also induce upslope flow and create
favorable conditions for snow showers across the higher terrain east
of the Lakes into Tuesday. Snow accumulations of 1-2" are possible
across the higher terrain east of the Lakes Monday night. A dusting
to up to an inch is possible elsewhere. A well mixed boundary layer
overnight will create gusty conditions with gusts 25 to 35 mph.
Temperatures will plummet to the low to mid 20s by Tuesday morning.

Increasing upstream moisture and surface based heating will maintain
scattered snow showers across the entire forecast region Tuesday. It
will feel blustery with wind gusts 25 to 35 mph and wind chills in
the teens. Sudden reductions to visibility in snow showers are also
possible. Upslope flow and lake enhancement will likely increase
intensity and coverage east of the Lakes. Additional snow amounts of
1-3" are possible across the higher terrain east of the Lakes and up
to an inch elsewhere, mainly on elevated surfaces.

The upper level trough will move east of the region Tuesday night
through Wednesday. A cold, westerly flow will maintain lake effect
snow showers southeast of Lake Ontario with an additional 1-2"
possible. Storm total snow amounts from Monday night through Tuesday
night of 1-3" inches are possible outside of lake effect areas, 2-4"
are possible along the Chautauqua Ridge and 4-6" are possible on the
Tug Hill. Some locations across the Niagara Frontier and Finger
Lakes may see less than an inch. While the core of the coldest air
will move east of the region Wednesday, 850mb temperatures will
still average -8C. Highs will remain below normal, in the upper 30s
to low 40s. Besides of few lingering lake snows east of Lake Ontario
Wednesday, dry conditions are expected across the forecast area.

The progressive pattern will continue with the next shortwave trough
digging into the Mid-West Wednesday night. Isentropic lift and
moisture will bring the chance for rain and snow into western NY
late Wednesday night. Temperatures will start to climb the latter
half of the night.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Multiple shortwave impulses diving southeastward from central Canada
and the Plains States will act in concert to carve out another
amplifying longwave trough over the eastern third of the CONUS
Thursday into Friday...with the axis of this feature then slowly
drifting east from the Ohio Valley to the eastern seaboard over the
weekend. As a result we can generally expect unsettled weather to
prevail for much of this period...with some improvement then
possibly following by later on next weekend.

Digging deeper into the forecast details...at the surface an initial
surface wave attendant to one of the main shortwave impulses will
gradually weaken and broaden as it tracks from the Ohio Valley to
the mid-Atlantic States through the first part of Friday...with the
medium range guidance coming into better agreement on this system
passing either over or a bit south of our area in the process. An
attendant increase in isentropic upglide and moisture return should
bring us our next round of fairly widespread precip Thursday into
Thursday night...for which PoPs have been further increased to the
high likely to lower-end categorical range (pcpn probabilities of 70-
80 percent). Model thermal fields continue to suggest that this may
begin as a rain/wet snow mix Thursday morning before transitioning
over to predominantly rain for the balance of the event...which
looks to gradually wane later Thursday night and Friday as the
initial surface low/trough axis pulls east of our longitude.

After that time...broad/elongated surface troughing looks to set up
along the front flank of the slowly advancing upper level trough
from later Friday on through next weekend. During this time
frame...the medium range guidance packages agree that an area of
enhanced DCVA/height falls will lead to secondary surface
cyclogenesis either somewhere over or offshore of the southeastern
states...with the resulting surface low then deepening and lifting
northward through the broader-scale mean surface trough. This being
said...there are considerable differences in the exact strength...
track...and timing of this secondary wave...all of which lead to
much uncertainty in the degree of precipitation chances our region
could see attendant to this system. With this in mind have generally
leaned toward a range of chance (30-50%) PoPs for Friday night
through Saturday (lowest west and highest east)...before gradually
lowering these through the rest of the period as the axis of the
entire system continues to drift slowly eastward. With respect to
ptype...model thermal profiles continue to suggest predominantly
rain as we push through the weekend...with some wet snow possibly
mixing in across the higher terrain with nocturnal cooling each
night.

If there is one positive aspect to this next large-scale trough...
it's that it will be nowhere near as cold as its predecessor earlier
in the week. Consequently...we should see temperatures rebound from
the unseasonably chilly conditions of Tuesday and Wednesday back to
much more normal levels for mid-April as we push through this period.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
VFR conditions will be found across the bulk of the region for the
rest of the overnight...although some leftover light snow will
accompany MVFR based strato-cu across portions of the western
Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region.

On Monday...weak high pressure over the region will support fair VFR
conditions through the majority of the day.

Cigs will lower and thicken later in the afternoon ahead of a
strong cold front. Rain showers will be found near and just ahead of
the front across the far western counties after 21z. As we progress
into the early evening hours...the rain showers will advance across
the remainder of the forecast area while changing to snow in the
wake of the aforementioned cold front. This will lead to widespread
MVFR conditions...and possibly a brief period of IFR weather in
lowered vsbys in snow.

Winds will significantly freshen in the wake of the front with winds
veering to the west and gusting to 30 knots at times.

Outlook...

Tuesday...MVFR/IFR in occasional snow showers.
Wednesday...MVFR in diminishing lake effect snow SE of Lake Ontario
