.SYNOPSIS...
After a cold night with lows generally in the single digits
around zero, the next storm system begins to move into the North
Country late Saturday. Widespread heavy snow, sleet, and
freezing rain are expected Saturday night through very early
Monday morning resulting in travel difficulties and the
potential for isolated to scattered power outages. Gusty winds
follow Monday before high pressure with drier and colder
conditions return through Wednesday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 924 PM EST Friday...Winds have begun to subside and that
trend will continue tonight with most areas seeing calm or
terrain driven winds by morning. Skies are currently mostly
clear over Vermont, but high clouds have entered much of
northern Nw York. They will continue to spread eastward, but
they will struggle to advance across the region due to a very
dry airmass in place, so it may take until morning for them to
fully reach the Northeast Kingdom. Temperatures have begun to
fall and as winds lower, they will drop quickly tonight.
However, the increasing high clouds will keep them a little
higher than under ideal radiational cooling conditions.

Breezes continue this afternoon with
dry conditions for the North Country. Mostly clear to clear
skies will help temperatures drop after breezes subside
overnight. Temperatures will cool efficiently with lows in the
single digits around zero. Some spots in northeastern Vermont
could have wind chills in the minus teens resulting in some
marginal concerns for frostbite on exposed skin.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT/...
* A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the whole of
  Vermont and northern New York Saturday night through part of
  Sunday night. Heavy accumulations of snow and sleet between 5
  and 10 inches are expected with some freezing rain from a
  trace to around a tenth of an inch. Expect difficult travel
  conditions and the potential for isolated to scattered power
  outages.

As of 332 PM EST Friday...Main change in model trends was the
more prominent warm nose pushing farther northward across the
North Country present in nearly all model suites. The result was
an increase in accumulating sleet and freezing rain while
cutting snowfall potential. Moderate to heavy snow accumulations
are expected mainly Saturday night through late Sunday morning
before transitioning to sleet and freezing rain. Snow will
start with higher 15-20:1 before dropping to around 8:1 by late
Sunday morning. This could allow for snow to become increasingly
sticky and able to more effectively accumulate on trees. It's
not the standard heavy wet snow event where prolonged periods of
dense snow create scattered to widespread power outages. Still,
isolated to scattered power outages are possible.

Model soundings note a prolonged period of a warm nose at/above
3000ft MSL. This will favor a transition to sleet late Sunday
morning where some spots could see moderate accumulations on the
ground. Slickness will largely be mitigated by prior snowfall,
but the tackiness of the preceding snow will do no favors for
tree branches and potential loading on branches. Mid/late
afternoon Sunday, models favor lowering of the warm layer with
increasing potential for a period of freezing rain. We'll be
watching closely but most likely amounts of ice accretion are
from a trace to around a tenth of an inch. Probabilistic
guidance points to southern Vermont for heaviest freezing rain
potential with a 40% chances of exceeding 0.25 inches while most
likely amounts cluster around a tenth to 0.15". Winds start to
increase late Sunday night heading into Monday with gusts
ranging 25 mph to 40 mph becoming probable. This may be the
period where stressed tree branches come down, especially in
areas where freezing rain crusts snow to the trees.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 332 PM EST Friday...As low pressure system departs to the east,
cold temperatures follow for the first half of next week. An upper
level trough will remain over our region on Monday and Tuesday, and
with some upper level shortwave energy passing through the area will
have some continued upslope snow showers. We will also have strong
winds on Monday with increased pressure gradient behind departing
system, NW winds 15-25 mph and gusts to 35 mph through much of the
day can be expected. Winds will diminish Tue into Wed with high
pressure ridging into the area. Highs through the period only in the
teens to lower 20s and overnight lows in the single digits
above/below zero. Latest GFS and EC runs have storm further off the
coast for Thu, therefore only caring chance pops at this time.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Through 06Z Sunday...VFR expected with slowly thickening and
lowering cigs in the 060-120 AGL range over time through 20Z
today. Thereafter, conditions lower to IFR in widespread light
to occasionally moderate snows as we progress past 22Z and into
the evening hours. Winds light and variable less than 6 kts at
all terminals through the forecast period except trending
northeasterly 6-12 kts at KMSS after 18Z.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for northern New York, central
Vermont, northeast Vermont, northwest Vermont and southern Vermont.

.DAY ONE...This afternoon and tonight.

Hazardous weather is not expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday.

Widespread snowfall and sleet accumulating between 5 and 10 inches
with additional ice accretion generally between a trace and a tenth
of an inch are expected Saturday night through very early Monday
morning. Travel will be difficult and isolated to scattered power
outages are possible.
