(Today through Tuesday)

The main concerns in the short term will the prolonged very cold
temperatures across Deep South Texas and the potential for some
wintry precipitation. Arctic high pressure across the Plains will
continue to build into the region today. Today will be cold with
well below normal temperatures as cold air advection (CAA)
continues across the region. High temperatures today will struggle
to make it out of the 40s, except for the low to mid 50s near the
coast. Moisture will surge northward along the coast today as a
coastal trough develops. Rain chances are expected to increase
from a low to moderate (20 to 50 percent) chance today to a high
chance (80 to 90 percent) chance by late tonight. Temperature
profiles will still be warm enough to support a cold rain this
afternoon through this evening. The cold rain event will continue
across most of the region tonight.

However, some freezing precipitation could begin to develop/mix
in across the northern ranchlands and the Rio Grande Plains as
temperatures begin to fall after midnight as the Arctic surge
continues. Have decided to upgrade the previous Winter Storm Watch
to a Winter Storm Warning for Starr, Hidalgo, Inland Kenedy and
Inland Willacy Counties until Noon on Tuesday due to the
increasing potential and/or likelihood of freezing drizzle, rain
or sleet developing over these areas resulting in hazardous
roadways.

A surge of high pressure will continue to push Arctic air into
Deep South Texas on Tuesday. Temperatures Tuesday morning will
range from the upper 20s across the Northern Ranchlands to the low
30s across the lower Valley. Tuesday morning's commute could be a
tricky and/or potentially hazardous one with this increased risk
for wintry precipitation shifting southeastward. Given the trends,
it will be possible that a brief burst of snow/sleet in addition
to freezing rain could develop on the backside of the precip field
Tuesday morning shifting from northwest to southeast over the
area. Therefore, have added Cameron County into a Winter Storm
Watch, until early afternoon as some moisture lingers across the
area and the best CAA occurs.

By daybreak Tuesday, we expect the wintry mix to across Zapata,
Jim Hogg and Brooks with total snow and sleet accumulations up to
one inch and ice accumulations around a light glaze, especially on
elevated surfaces. Elsewhere, a mix of cold rain. light freezing
rain or drizzle and sleet will be possible. Conditions will dry
west to east during the day on Tuesday.

Also, winds will increase late tonight into Tuesday and a Wind
Advisory will be likely for the coastal counties. Elevated winds
will make temperatures feel even colder with feels like temps in
the teens and 20s and an Extreme Cold Watch has been upgraded for
all of inland Deep South Texas for Monday night into Tuesday
morning. Temperatures will remain very cold during the day on
Tuesday with highs likely not getting out of the mid to upper 30s,
unless you are right along the coast where some locations could
reach the lower 40s and feels like temperatures will only be in
the mid 20s to low 30s.

There is a High Risk of rip currents along area beaches through
the period.

Key Messages:

- We expect near record cold weather and low temperatures Tuesday
night to Wednesday morning.

Tuesday night to Wednesday morning should see the coldest temps
of this arctic outbreak. The record low for Brownsville on this
day is 23 deg F, set in 1983. The record low for Harlingen on this
day is 22 deg F, set in 1983. The record low for McAllen on this
day is 23 deg F, set in 1983. The forecast calls for low
temperatures in the mid to upper 20s, with reasonable worst case
temperatures reaching or breaking low temperature records. Wind
chill (apparent temp) values will also decrease into the teens and
20s Tuesday night, and a cold weather advisory is in effect.
Precip chances will decrease dramatically Tuesday night, however,
so the wintry precip threat will be low. Another coastal trough
will develop Wednesday through Friday, but rain chances will be
focused over the Gulf, and with warmer temps the threat of wintry
precip will remain low. Still, Wednesday night and Thursday night
will also feature sub-freezing temps for the brush country and the
Brooks/Kenedy ranches with 30s elsewhere for all but the (warmer)
immediate coast.

The cold air mass will modify late in the week with temperatures
trending upward. Weather conditions will be dry with high pressure
spreading over the area. Temperatures on Friday will recover into
the 60s, into the 70s on Saturday, and into the 70s and lower 80s
on Sunday.

Ceilings are beginning to lower as rain and drizzle start to
develop over the area. Ceilings are currently at low-end MVFR,
expected to lower to IFR later this afternoon and continue all day
tomorrow. Freezing rain, sleet, and possible snow may develop
pre-dawn Tuesday, first at MFE and potentially impact HRL and BRO
before noon Tuesday. Northwest winds are light at this time and
expected to increase tonight through Tuesday morning, with wind
gusts as high as 40 knots. Low level wind shear is also forecast
for BRO and HRL Tuesday morning.

Today through Tuesday...Latest observations indicate moderate
northeast winds and seas around 4.3 seas feet on the Gulf waters.
Small Craft Advisory (SCA) conditions are expected to develop
again later today on the Gulf waters as winds increase and seas
build with the development of a coastal trough. There is a medium
to high chance (30 to 70 percent) of winds exceeding 20 knots this
afternoon on the Gulf waters. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect
for the Gulf waters starting at Noon today and on the Laguna
Madre this evening. As high pressure continues to surge into the
coastal waters late tonight, marine conditions will become more
Hazardous. There is a medium to high chance (40 to 80 percent) of
frequent gale force gusts late tonight into Tuesday on the Laguna
Madre and the Gulf waters. The Gale Watch has been upgraded and
pushed up in time and is now in effect beginning at 3 AM Tuesday.

Tuesday night through Friday night...Precip and the tightest
pressure gradient will shift offshore Tuesday night. However, we may
need to keep an advisory up for winds on the Laguna Tuesday night,
and Gulf high seas will require advisories through Wednesday night
for the nearshore and through Thursday night for the offshore Gulf
waters. After some slight improvement on Wednesday, another coastal
trough will form Wednesday night through the end of the forecast.
Though the gradient won't be as tight, the trough will help prolong
less than favorable marine conditions as well as rain chances into
Thursday/Thursday night and Friday.
