Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 1040 PM MST Wed Feb 12 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Very cold tonight. Overnight lows near or below zero across the plains, and as cold as -25F across the mountain valleys! - Prolonged mountain snow Thursday night through Saturday evening, with moderate to heavy accumulations and expected travel impacts. - Warmer/drier Thursday-Friday for lower elevations, then snow possibly returning Friday night/Saturday. - Active pattern continues into next week, with increasing potential for another system Monday into Tuesday. && .UPDATE... Issued at 830 PM MST Wed Feb 12 2025 Clouds over much of the area has meant that temperatures are creeping down and not plummeting. Greeley is still at +3 F and Boulder is at +5 F. The one place without clouds and lower temperatures is Limon as readings have hit -8 F there. The forecast generally remains on track for temperatures and minimal changes were made. The likelihood of fog in Weld County seems to be low at this time. && .SHORT TERM /Through Thursday/... Issued at 213 PM MST Wed Feb 12 2025 Satellite shows a broad swath of stratocu across the Denver metro and east into the adjacent plains this afternoon. There's been the occasional flurry/light snow shower with this, but not much more than that. Cloud cover and any remnant snow showers should quickly diminish this evening. The real story is still the temperatures. On the bright side, temperatures did in fact get into double digits today... with a high of 10F (so far) at DEN, while most other locations in the metro got into the low teens. Temperatures should quickly fall back to near or below zero this evening into the early overnight hours as skies clear out. A few of the colder spots in the plains (most of Weld county, Limon, etc.) may drop into the -10s, while the Denver metro sticks a little closer to zero. Even colder temperatures are forecast across Middle/North Park where it wouldn't be surprising to see some spots fall to -25F. While winds will generally be light across the forecast area, there should be just enough wind for wind chill values to fall to -15F or lower. Kept the previous shift's Cold Weather Advisory, even if a couple zones are a little marginal. We should see a return to warmer and drier weather on Thursday, as weak ridging begins to build over the region. While highs should be much warmer than today, there's still a bit of uncertainty across the plains. Most guidance is often too aggressive in scouring out the strong near surface temperature inversions, especially in places like Greeley. Our forecast remains on the cooler side of guidance with highs in the upper 20s to the mid 30s, with mostly sunny skies. Pacific moisture tries to work into the western edge of the CWA by Thursday evening, but any mountain snow will likely hold off until Thursday night. More on that below... && .LONG TERM /Thursday night through Wednesday/... Issued at 213 PM MST Wed Feb 12 2025 A deep upper level trough will move onto the California coast Thursday night and into the Great Basin Friday. Southwest flow around the base of the trough will transport very moist Pacific air into the Southern and Central Rockies. Under southwest flow aloft, the mountains of Summit and Grand Counties are usually shadowed from the heavier snow by the San Juan, Elk, and Sawatch mountains off to the southwest. However, given the deep and very moist airmass (precipitable water values ~200 percent of normal), expect some snowfall to survive. Models don't offer much help with some dry and some quite snowy. Will go middle of the road for now with light to moderate snowfall for the mountains of Summit and Grand Counties for Friday and Friday night. For the areas east of the mountains, the mild southwest flow aloft will bring near normal temperatures and dry conditions. As the upper level trough nears late Friday and then moves over Friday night, a cold front backs into the area. Some models hold off until Saturday morning, but that seems a bit too late. We could see a few rain and snow showers late Friday as the upper level trough moves across the area. Precipitation should be light, unless the cold front timing lines with the upper level trough pushing through. Then we could see few inches of snow across the Front Range, per the 00Z ECMWF model. Flow aloft turns northwesterly on Saturday. Cold air advection and the northwest flow aloft usually leads to decent snowfall across the central and northern mountains. This should be the case Saturday even with less available moisture. For areas east of the mountains, it will be much cooler behind a cold front. Weak upslope flow and a weak wave embedded in the northwest flow aloft could produce light snowfall late Saturday. For Sunday weak ridging in the northwest flow aloft is expected to produce mostly dry and mild conditions. Still can't rule out a few light mountain snow showers due to orographic lift. For Monday through Wednesday of next week, we'll likely see west- northwest flow aloft produce orographic snow over the mountains Monday. A shortwave trough embedded in the west- northwest flow aloft late Monday should increase snowfall over the mountains. For areas east of the mountains, the trough and cold front associated with it will usher in cooler air and bring a round of light snow, if this pattern pans out for late Monday and Tuesday. For Wednesday, model consensus shows northwest flow aloft continues, which would keep temperatures cool and continue to bring snow to the mountains. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday/... Issued at 1040 PM MST Wed Feb 12 2025 VFR conditions will persist with light drainage winds through 15Z. The chance of any fog is decreasing and now less than 10%, even at KBJC. This arctic airmass is quite dry and lack of a cyclone will keep that threat minimized. For Thursday, winds are expected to transition to southeasterly 15Z-21Z, but then a DCVZ or even a cold surge out of the deeper cold pool north of the TAF sites is likely (60% chance). Thus, we'll have winds gaining a northerly component in the TAF after 21Z, before returning to normal drainage winds a bit later than normal - closer to 02Z-03Z Friday.
