(Today through Tuesday) Issued at 345 AM CST MON JAN 20 2025 Key Messages: - Dangerous wind chill values continue through this morning, with wind chill values dropping to 5-15 degrees again tonight/Tuesday morning. - Winter weather potential continues for the southern portions of Central Alabama with snow accumulations up to 2.0" possible Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night. Very cold conditions continue across Central Alabama this morning with arctic air advecting into the region with breezy northwesterly winds. Temperatures in the 10s are forecast across the north, with temperatures in the 20s across the south, by sunrise. Wind chill values in the single digits to slightly below zero will be possible at times, and this coincides with the ongoing Extreme Cold Warning. A Cold Weather Advisory remains elsewhere. Thankfully, temperatures will rise into the 20s and 30s this afternoon and dangerous wind chills will subside somewhat. However, a Cold Weather Advisory will likely be needed again tonight into Tuesday morning with wind chill values ranging generally 5-15 degrees. Expect new headlines to be issued for that this afternoon once current warnings/advisories expire. Winter weather remains forecast for portions of Central Alabama Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night as a low pressure system develops in the western Gulf and moisture overruns a front along the northern Gulf. Guidance remains conflicted as to whether this low will remain closed off, or devolve into an open wave surface trough as it moves east. Either way, newly available hi-res guidance is suggesting our snow chances are dwindling near the I-20 corridor and are clustering snow accumulations farther south near US Hwy 80 and I-85. Various forecast soundings near I-20 depict dry air below 700 mb which will cause sublimation through descent without some increase in moisture and lift. Furthermore, it appears best frontogenesis will establish south of our forecast area, somewhere just north of I-10. Thus, PoPs have decreased and shifted south, and QPF has been decreased as well. I've maintained fairly high PoPs across the south where forecast soundings depict better saturation through the column, including saturation in the DGZ and collocated negative omega values. Areas south still have 40-60% probability of receiving 1" or more of snow which would cause big impacts to travel considering forecast temperatures Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Arguments can be made that even light snow accumulations could cause big problems as well, as history has proven. We'll be making headline changes shortly, likely upgrading portions of the watch area to a warning. 40/Sizemore && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday through next Sunday) Issued at 215 AM CST MON JAN 20 2025 Key Messages: - Well below average temperatures will continue into the weekend. By the start of this long-term, dry conditions will return to the forecast as the trough in the short-term reinforces NW flow aloft. Overnight lows will continue to remain below freezing, with afternoon highs barely climbing into the 40s. Thankfully, this pattern will begin to shift into Friday, as another deep trough begins to dig into the Midwest. This trough will shift flow aloft back to the SW, eventually shifting the surface winds back to the south. In turn, moisture will begin to rebound across the area, and temperatures will begin to climb given this flow from the Gulf. However, rain chances will begin to increase during this timeframe as well, as another cold front begins to move in from the north. Thankfully, only general rain is expected, and no weather hazards or impacts aside from the early cold are anticipated. /44/ && .AVIATION...
