Very high clouds stream into the state from the northwest, with
light and variable winds across most of the area. Winds are
expected to begin increasing through the day today, with above
normal high temperatures. The only main change was the removal
of patchy fog in the southwest, as the high clouds moving in has
helped limit the development of it.

A warm night continues across western and central North Dakota,
with many locations still above 25 degrees. Lows should dip
into the mid/upper teens for most of the area, with winds
largely light and variable. Some high clouds continue to stream
across the area from the northwest. In parts of the southwest,
where winds are expected to be the lightest, some very patchy
fog may develop as a result of the increased moisture due to
snowmelt, though at this point we haven't seen any yet. Today,
breezy conditions return, as a shortwave to our north and its
associated surface low begin to deepen. Highs today will remain
above normal, ranging from the lower 30s in the James River
Valley to the lower 40s in the west. Overnight lows generally
remain above normal, with parts of the northwest beginning to
cool off as a result of the incoming cold front, ranging from
the mid 20s in the southern James River Valley to the lower
teens in the far northwest.

Winds pick up late tonight, becoming rather windy on Friday, as
the aforementioned cold front begins to sweep through the state
from the north. Windy conditions can be expected across the
entire area by midday, along with low chances for snow showers
moving along the frontal boundary. Modest instability and
midlevel lapse rates could help aid in the production of some
stronger squalls, though given how dry its been recently, the
likely outcome is just some snow showers sweeping through the
state, locally intense at times. The increased wind speeds may
also bring about some blowing snow, especially across the north.
At the moment, given how quick this front will move through,
snow accumulations don't look too impressive, mostly ranging
from a dusting to maybe half an inch. Highs on Friday will
mostly be within the 20s and lower 30s, with overnight lows
mostly in the negative single digits.

Following the cold front, intensely deep troughing descending
from the Hudson Bay will position itself across the Northern
Plains and Great Lakes regions, bringing about a period if
extremely cold weather. Highs on Saturday will mostly be in the
single digits above and below zero, with lows Saturday night
decreasing to around 15 to 20 below zero. The coldest period is
expected to be Sunday through Monday, with highs these days
ranging from 5 below zero to 15 below zero. Sunday night lows
will be an exceptionally cold 20 to 30 below zero, with Monday
night lows mostly from 15 to 25 below zero. To make things even
more unpleasant, wind chills during this time will warrant
multiple cold weather headlines. Saturday wind chills will drop
below negative 30 during the day, decreasing into the negative
40s overnight. Little to no reprieve is expected Sunday, with
Sunday night wind chills ranging from negative 40 to negative
50. Monday will once again see little recovery during the day,
before the brutal cold moves out of the area by Tuesday morning.
Luckily, very little precipitation is expected at this time,
with only occasional flurries possible underneath any lower
clouds that develop. Beyond the cold spell, long range guidance
suggests a return to more active northwesterly flow aloft, with
chances for snow and highs in the mid 20s possible by Wednesday.

VFR CIGs and VIS and breezy until the end of the period. Wind
shear at 1kft across all of North Dakota this evening through
most of the night as an arctic cold front moves in. This will
create CIGs around 5kft and very breezy northwest winds for
Friday. Late Friday morning CIGs will drop to MVFR. Light snow
is possible across the area with this front, confidence is low
enough to leave out of TAF for now.
