the 30s and west to southwest winds generally 5 to 15 mph. Only
some high clouds tracking southeast across the forecast area
today. Only some minor adjustments to sky cover were made early

.DISCUSSION...

We'll start with a general overlook and get to specifics later.
Fire weather concerns will be handled in the Fire Weather
Discussion.

Warm and breezy today with highs in the 50s and 60s, except some
mid to upper 40s around the Turtle Mountains. Strongest winds
look to be in the west and south central where we could see some
gusts to around 35 mph. Winds are expected to be lighter north
central.

Mild overnight tonight with lows in the lower 30s to lower 40s.

On Monday, a strong cold front will drop southeast through the
state. Ahead of the cold front west winds will become strong by
late morning and through the afternoon. This will allow
temperatures to climb into the 60s across a good portion of
southern North Dakota. Highs will be tempered a bit north closer
to the surface low and associated cold front tracking along the
International Border. As the cold front moves through, winds
will shift northwest. Strongest winds during the day will be
just ahead and just behind the cold front. Winds diminish in
the evening. There is a slight chance of rain/snow showers far
north Monday morning, then a better chance (40 to 60%) of
rain/snow showers along and north of the Highway 2 corridor
Monday afternoon.

Much colder temperatures are expected Monday night and Tuesday
with lows in the single digits around the Turtle Mountains to
the teens west, Monday night. Highs Tuesday will range from the
mid 30s Turtle Mountains to the lower 50s southwest. A weak wave
may bring a slight chance of rain/snow showers far north Tuesday
afternoon/evening.

Temperatures rebound into the 40s north to 50s and 60s south
Wednesday and Thursday as we see upper level ridging over the
area, ahead of the weekend storm system. Friday will be the
transition day. Temperature wise, the ensemble spread for
Bismarck is nearly 20 degrees given a wide spread in ensemble
solutions. We will see precipitation chances increase on Friday
with currently little agreement in whether it's more of an early
start or a late start Friday. Friday night through Saturday
night still looks to be the most impactful period weather wise
and this is where we will focus most of our attention.

Regarding the Winds on Monday. After collaboration with
neighbors, we opted to keep the High Wind Watch going for now
and holding off on the High Wind Warning. I would expect that if
we see the new 12Z guidance come in similar to the 00Z guidance,
we would probably upgrade to a warning for most, if not all of
the forecast area.

Regarding the late week system. I once had a so called friend
that used to ask me if it was going to rain, but then said wait,
I'll just flip a coin. Well that popped in to my mind this
morning while analyzing the clusters for the weekend system. We
did end up bumping up the confidence to 55 percent that
portions of western and central ND will be impacted by a
Colorado low. Here's why. When looking at the mid and upper
levels, there is a stronger/quicker solution and a weaker/slower
solution. The split between these is exactly 50/50. Each of
these solutions also has a more east scenario in the QPF
placement, as well as a west scenario. Both of the east
solutions produce very little to no qpf over western ND. The
western solutions would bring sufficient qpf to product
impactful weather over central North Dakota, and perhaps minor
impacts west. When looking at the separate cores, there is a
decidedly GEFS favoring for the quicker and stronger solution
and a EPS favoring of the slower and weaker solution. When
looking at the deterministic solutions, one thing we noticed
today that we didn't see yesterday was the amount of upper level
troughing over eastern Montana in the ECMWF. Yesterday there
was a significant amount of shortwave ridging moving into the
forecast area. The GFS continues to advertise a northern stream
trough working into western ND. This is what could possibly be
producing the consistent higher qpf amounts over western ND.
They're probably overdone, but they're there. The ECMWF and CMC
also show this to some extent, much less than the GFS though.
When you consider the deterministic solution, and if you throw
in the potential for strong winds and possibly some freezing
rain over central ND, it's enough to bump confidence up to 55
percent, rather than just flipping a coin.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z MONDAY/...

VFR conditions are expected through the forecast period. Expect
westerly winds around 15-20 kts this afternoon, with some higher
gusts. This evening through tonight, winds will become
southwesterly around 10-15 kts, with low level wind shear
impacting the western half of the state. By late Monday morning,
a very strong cold front will begin entering the state from the
northwest. As the front sweeps through, west to northwest winds
are expected to gust as high as 50-55 kts. Outside of northwest
North Dakota, these higher gusts will likely be delayed until
Monday afternoon.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Near critical fire weather conditions are expected over far
southwest and south central North Dakota, along the South Dakota
border. Will monitor for possible Red Flag conditions but for
now will hold off on issuing a Red Flag Warning. It looks like
we see marginal Wind and Humidity criteria today but they do not
match up long enough for enough confidence to issue a Red Flag
Warning. It's close, especially in the far southwest, but the
RAP winds are strongest this morning through early afternoon,
then diminish mid to late afternoon. Humidities bottom out mid
to late this afternoon. There certainly may be few hours where
they match up, but confidence is not high in this occurring.
Rates of spread are also not too impressive, especially when
compared to Monday.

Speaking of Monday, we have upgraded the Fire Weather Watch to a
Red Flag Warning on Monday. The main concern on Monday will be
strong to very strong winds. Winds will be mainly out of the
west until a strong cold front pushes through, and the winds
shift to the northwest. With the warm temperatures expected
Monday so it should be a good mix down day. Westerly winds peak
in the afternoon, just ahead of the cold front passage.
Therefore we have a max in westerly winds Monday afternoon as
the lapse rates becomes quite steep, and then an abrupt shift to
the northwest, combined with strong cold advection with a strong
isallobaric component. Once the cold front passes, temperatures
will quickly drop with increasing humidities. The Rates of
spread are also higher across the entire Warned area, with very
high values along the South Dakota border. The far northwest
portion of the RFW was a bit suspect with higher humidities and
a quicker cooldown that the the rest of the RFW area, but given
the winds are so strong, we opted to go with the RFW.
