Issued at 1235 PM CST Fri Jan 17 2025 Heavy bands of snow or blowing snow continue in the north central, while clouds clear in the southeast. The Winter and Wind Advisories continue. With winds staying elevated blowing snow will continue in the north central through this evening. Temperatures are falling too across the area. UPDATE Issued at 1010 AM CST Fri Jan 17 2025 We decided to just go ahead and change to a Winter Weather Advisory from the International Border down to Highway 2, and into Foster and Stutsman counties. This replaced the Wind Advisory there. We may need to extend this south if conditions worsen. UPDATE Issued at 945 AM CST Fri Jan 17 2025 Winds are gusting into the 50s (mph) across the area with snow falling in the north half of the state. We have seen visibilities drop to 1/4 mile at times. We have been closely watching this for possible snow squall conditions. This threat will continue through the day, with the snow moving south. The Wind Advisory continues, however there is a possibility for a Winter Weather Advisory instead, around HWY 2 and north. If the reduced visibilities continue up north after the main snow bands move through, that will probably be the direction we move. The wind seems to peak around when the front edge of the cold front moves through and then relaxes down to around 45 mph. UPDATE Issued at 618 AM CST Fri Jan 17 2025 Secondary cold front has entered the northwest and north central, with 50 mph wind gusts now common to see there. In addition, low level stratus and scattered light snow showers have also developed into the northwest and north central behind the frontal passage. Winds will continue to ramp up along and behind the FROPA as it continues south this morning, along with low stratus and scattered snow showers developing southward. Any more robust snow shower will have the capability of significantly reducing visibility for a short period when combined with the strong northwest wind. This is mentioned in the NPW (Wind Advisory Product), and will elevate messaging if/as needed through the day today. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 350 AM CST Fri Jan 17 2025 Currently, zonal flow aloft with a strong mid level trough dropping east-southeast from south central Canada into the Northern Plains early this morning. Deep surface low is over southern Manitoba, with its associated initial cold front now through much of western and central North Dakota early this morning. Winds remain robust across northwest and north central North Dakota, with a few gusts to around 45 mph the past few hours. Winds not as strong yet farther south, where gradient forcing is weaker. Temperatures remain fairly mild in the low to mid 30s still, which will be today's highs. Secondary cold front nearing the International border, and will surge quickly south/southeast across the local region now through the remainder of the morning. As this occurs, winds will remain strong across the north, and will rapidly increase with the FROPA across the south with time. Much colder temperatures will also develop from north to south along and behind the front, with temperatures dropping through the day. As we move through the afternoon, do expect winds to gradually taper off as peak winds within the mixed layer weaken and pressure rises start to subside. Wind advisory in effect through early this evening, which looks good so no changes to headlines. In addition to gusty winds developing farther south this morning, we expect an area of low clouds initially, followed by isolated to scattered snow showers, developing quickly southward along and behind the secondary cold FROPA. Low stratus has already moved into northwest and north central ND, with radar returns across far south central Canada not far behind. Could see light snow across my north with the next hour or two, and I did opt to use coverage wording with low QPF potential. Regarding snow squall chances, latest SPC analysis and RAP model output (Sfc CAPE, Snow Sql Parameter, etc..) mainly highlight western ND and more so the southwest for this morning. However, with any snow shower coupled with the wind we're expecting, brief periods of very poor visibility will be possible most anywhere that sees decent snowfall. Will continue to mention this in the Wind Advisory product as well. Arctic airmass surges south into the Northern Plains through this weekend and early next week, as a deep long wave trough settles over much of North America. Multiple Arctic frontal passages are expected Saturday through Monday, each bringing a reinforced shot of very cold air. The coldest period is still forecast to be Sunday-Monday, when we expect a prolonged period of below zero temperatures, with overnight lows both Sunday and Monday night nearing 30 below across the north and 20 below south. Northern and eastern areas of the state look to remain below zero from tonight through next Tuesday morning. Coupled with the cold temperatures, winds remain somewhat breezy through the MLK holiday weekend, with life threatening winds chills still very much expected. We did decide to hold off on this shift on issuing any cold weather headlines, with the focus on today's winds and possible snow. Pattern change takes place starting on Tuesday, when the upper trough moves farther east into the eastern CONUS and a progressive flow develops over our region.
