.SYNOPSIS...
Quiet weather tonight will become more active on Wednesday with
gusty northwest winds along with the next batch of showers and
weak thunderstorms. Dry conditions Thursday before more
precipitation Friday and again Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Main concerns in the near term are focused on the breezy
northwest winds this afternoon...gusting 25 to 35 mph...with
high pressure building northeastward from the Mid Atlantic along
with a very dry air mass. Temperatures have warmed seasonably
into the lower to mid 50s this afternoon and are expected to
drop back into the 30s for much of the forecast area tonight.

Conditions will remain dry through the night with thicker cloud
cover pushing in from the west around or just after sunrise Wed
morning.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Primary concerns in the short term are centered around the very
strong wind gusts possible Wed afternoon into Thursday morning
over much of the forecast area. A potent upper level short wave
and associated surface low will rotate across the Great Lakes
and Northeast US on Wed. The sfc low will deepen rapidly from
around 999mb around southern Ontario province to around 971mb
off the coast of Maine. As the low strengthens the pres gradient
will tighten and cause winds to increase over much of the
region Wed morning.

High pressure builds in quickly behind the departing system
later Wed and Wed night...which will act to induce a component
of isallobaric wind that should further enhance the synoptic
wind field during this period. To go along with this synoptic
wind, there is also an area of convection that is expected to
develop in wrn NY/PA late Wed morning and move eastward across
central NY and ne PA later in the afternoon. If the convection
reaches a favorable depth to mix down strong winds aloft, there
could be an additional component to these strong wind gusts.
Currently, model guidance is indicating 850mb winds around 50 to
60 kt, and 1000-850mb lapse rates around 7.5 to 8
degC/km...which would make mixing to the surface fairly
efficient. The storms are expected to be limited in their
vertical extent with a narrow corridor of ML CAPE values roughly
50 to 100 J/kg, but they are still expected to potentially pack
quite a punch with 0-6km Shear values around 55 to 75 kts and a
potent upper s/w to provide the lift.

Strong wind gusts will be possible 1 PM Wed to 1 PM Thu, but
the highest threat for damaging winds, especially from low-
topped convection, will be from around 6 to 9 PM. And also
extending several hours post-frontal through around 2 AM Thu.

Behind the front on Thursday, a relatively cold air mass spills
into the region from the northwest with 850mb temperatures -5
to -8 deg C and a persistent 330 deg flow, and potentially a
brief upstream lake connection to Georgian Bay. These conditions
could allow for some high elevation snow in the hills south of
Syracuse and parts of the southern Finger Lakes. This should be
a relatively short-lived period as the 850mb ridge starts to
build in from the west later in the day Thu. Plus...it will
likely be very difficult to accumulate snow during the day with
ground temps fairly warm, 2m temps in the 40s, and a relatively
high sun angle.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A building ridge over the eastern US on Thu night and early Friday
will keep weather conditions quiet during this time, but on the cool
side as overnight lows Thu night dip into the 20s and lower 30s.
Plenty of sun on Friday will bump temps into the lower 50s with
increasing southerly flow and clouds later in the day before the
next short wave and trailing cold front sweep through the region Fri
night into Saturday. Lingering lake effect precip Saturday night
will proceed the next lake cutting low on Sunday with rain changing
to snow into Monday with the potential for some significant lake
effect snow early next week along with some of the coldest air of
the season so far.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
VFR conditions will persist through most of the TAF period as
high pressure builds in from the SW overnight. A low pressure
system tracks across the Great Lakes on today and into Northern
NY this evening. Towards the end of the forecast period, some
MVFR showers and strong gusty winds will start to push into the
area as this system drags a cold front through the region. At
this time, confidence is low if these showers and possibly
thunderstorms will arrive before 00Z Thursday or just after.

Outlook...

Wednesday night...Cold front will bring showers through the
region as well as strong gusty winds. Fuel Alt to IFR
restrictions are possible, especially at the Central NY
terminals.

Thursday...Some lingering restrictions possible at the Central
NY terminals with lake effect showers; otherwise becoming
mainly VFR.

Friday...Mainly VFR. Some rain showers and associated
restrictions are possible late in the day and at night.

Saturday...Showers tapering off with improving conditions.

Sunday...Showers possible with associated restrictions.
